Lantiq’s 8-Port VINAX
dp8 Chipset Allows up to
300 Mbps per Residence

why Intel wanted to acquire Lantiq in a deal that
closed this week. It gives Intel strength in DSL and fiber
broadband technology for telcos in addition to what
Intel already had in DOCSIS technology for cablecos.
Lantiq’s new 8-port FTTdp (fiber-to-the-
distribution-point) VINAX dp8 chipset allows up to
an aggregated 300 Mbps per VDSL line at distances
up to 100 meters from the DPU. The chipset can be
in a tiny box that’s only 16 x 16 cm and does not
need a separate power outlet. Lantiq said it gives
copper-wire telcos their most efficient broadband
ever. Lantiq believes it is the industry’s best at
efficiency because of its dedicated reverse power
extractor and the efficiency of the GPON NPU plus
it has the lowest unit cost because there is no need
for custom chips.
The advantage of FTTdp technology is that it allows
telcos to reduce both their deployment costs and time-
to-market for offering competitive broadband speeds
because they can use their existing telephone wires to
the residence and within MDUs.
Distribution points (DPUs) made with the VINAX
dp8 chipsets connects the telco’s fiber cable to the
existing copper phone wires. They can support
up to eight modems/gateways in residences. The
chipset “integrates all required network processing
functions for flow control with advanced impulse
noise protection (G.INP) and solid quality of service
(QoS) features.”
Lantiq’s recommended reference design includes
reverse powering, which means power comes from
the modem/gateway and telcos do not need to install
an electrical outlet near the DPU. Its advanced reverse
power capability balances power sharing among up to
eight homes.
Dirk Wieberneit, SVPand GM of Lantiq’s broadband
business unit, called the VINAX dp8 chipset “a
paradigm shifting innovation that enables ultra-low
cost MDUs” — and “at minimal system cost per port.”
Lantiq’s New Gateway Processor
Is Multi-Functional
Last month Lantiq announced a new home
gateway network processor — the GRX350 —
that it called “the industry’s most integrated home
gateway network processor.” It provides Quality of
Service (QoS) for all incoming and outgoing data,
a dedicated execution processor and hardware-
enforced virtualization, which separates concurrent
applications so that networking functions execute
separately from non-networking applications, such
as smart home services.
The GRX350 has multi-function capabilities. Lantiq
said the multi-MIPS-based GRX350 network processor
“integrates carrier-grade edge router features into its
advanced home gateway architecture, which includes
multiple CPUs, Gigabit switch with integrated GPHYs,
3x3 Wi-Fi, Voice and DECT telephony plus handles
any kind of wide-area-network (WAN) connectivity
including the new G.fast standard as well as GPON,
Gigabit Ethernet WAN, VDSL2 or hybrid access
network approaches such as DSL/LTE (DSL + LTE).”
It also integrates offloading technologies to
intelligently manage the multi-millions of packets
from all the wired and wireless devices competing
for network bandwidth in digital home environments
doing it with a 0% CPU load.
Rainer Spielberg, VP and chief of Lantiq’s
residential gateway solutions business line, said,
“With Lantiq TrueQoS, customers get the service they
want at the quality they want. In addition the GRX350
will power the most secure gateways ever available
for home networks, thanks to the dedicated security
core. We believe these unique features will be the

Lantiq’s partnership with IOLITE, a spin-off of DAI-
Labor (Technical University of Berlin), on an open
smart home platform called IOLITE. It allows devices
of all standards and kinds — such as sensors, actuators
or cameras — to be integrated and used in a home.
Lantiq’s family of GRX 300 network processors
powers the IOLITE platform.
Intel has said IoT is one of its growth opportunities.
The Lantiq/IOLITE technology is aimed for
use in future smart homes and smart cities that
will support the emerging e-health, e-mobility,
e-energy and industry 4.0 markets. Its key feature
is interoperability. Lantiq said, “IOLITE offers a
unique, open smart home ecosystem with a pure
focus on interoperability — the broadband gateway
will be the central hub in the connected home,
enabling the easy management of all devices,
home automation, the Internet of Things (IoT)
and further applications. The IOLITE ecosystem
offers cooperation opportunities and benefits for all
participating partners, including users, installers,
developers, providers and device manufacturers.
Related tools enable smart and easy configuration of
the smart home environment.”
IOLITE plans its market launch for the third quarter
of 2015.
It’s Done! Lantiq Is Intel’s
Intel said this week that it has completed the
acquisition of Lantiq from Golden Gate Capital.
Intel already had products with the cablecos’DOCSIS
technology. Lantiq adds technology in DSL/VDSL,
fiber/LTE/IoT but not in G.fast although Lantiq has
a close product partnership with G.fast chipmaker
Sckipio. Sckipio uses Lantiq technology in the
reference designs for G.fast product.
Lantiq has been at the forefront of combing DSL
and LTE into one consumer premises device for use
in areas with slow DSL speeds. By combining the
two technologies, it said, it has been able to achieve
speeds that are capable of delivering flicker-free
video streams. Initial interest, Lantiq said, has been
in Europe but it expects interest to increase in Latin
American countries.
Dan Artusi, who has been Lantiq’s CEO since
2012, will head up Intel’s combined DOCSIS/
DSL/Fiber organization, which will be called
Intel’s Connected Home Division. IoT is not
included because Intel’s IoT team is developing
technology for devices, not for broadband, which
the Connected Home Division is doing. Artusi will
report to Gregory Bryant who is Intel’s corporate
VP of the client computing group.
No layoffs are planned and Intel has already begun
integrating Lantiq’s employees, who are mainly in
Munich, into Intel.

Speed Test Technology

Most people check their bandwidth speed from a
device such as PC, smartphone or tablet. The problem
is that those are speeds that are impacted by the
vagaries of the home network’s performance, whether
Wi-Fi or wireline.
Chipmaker Ikanos Communications is embedding
its new Gigabit Speed Test software in the chips it
makes for gateways, regardless of the broadband
access technology it uses. That’ll allow telcos to
accurately measure the data speed of the broadband
they’re providing, even for rates up to 1 Gbps. Ikanos
said “Gigabit Speed Test is a powerful new analysis
