Introduction
This final project of elements of natural built and environment is to let students in
foundation in natural and built environment to understand national topography, landscape,
space, building and infrastructure. According to the project brief, every student has to choose
a type of city to build. The city size is around 25 to 40 km2
and a population of 150,000 to
500,000. The main goal of this project is to understand the component and elements of a city
and creating a better future city. Guidelines are given to do this project. In individual
component, students are required to do a presentation and hand in a report. As for group, a
presentation of a city with a model is required.
I have to research cities and make a livable city of my own and present it out in the
presentation. Data collection could be found in the World Wide Web.

2. A City
2.1. Definition
A city is a place that has culture, population and commerce.
2.2. History
Cities in ancient times were mainly a central place for trading. Most cities in the old days
were meant for business and trading centre.
2.3. What makes a city
A city should have stationary population that does not migrate. A city also needs
infrastructure. It needs buildings that have a purpose for the people. It needs a road or street
to connect through places inside a city. Security can also make a city peaceful or dangerous.
2.4. What makes a good city
There is no perfect city in this world. A good city shall have a stable economy, a convenient
transport network, an efficient water supply and sanitation system, affordable housing, well
education system and up-to date medical services.
2.5. Future city
Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University
5
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
The purpose of having a future city is to increase the housing area and improve from the
cities in the past. Mistakes from the past cities shall be changed and improved to make a
better city for the people. Future city should also have more advanced technology and better
education to increase the people’s knowledge.
3. Ancient cities
3.1 History
The earliest cities could be found in Mesopotamia. Teotihuacan, a Mesoamerican city built
in around 400 BC is located in Mexico. The city includes castles, residential buildings,
communal and a palace.
The other extraordinary ancient city is the Machu Picchu located in Peru. The city uses rock
to build giant walls, terraces and ramps which preserved its natural environment.
As for ancient underground cities, Derinkuyu underground city was opened in 1969. The city can
accommodate to around 20,000 people. The entrance could be closed with a big rock as it is a stone
door. The underground city was carved out with rocks which became a unique geological formation.
Other than that, the linkage between each place in the underground city was extraordinary too.

ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
3.2 Ancient city I am focusing on
The ancient city I have focused on is Petra. The entrance of Petra’s underground city is
carved out and has a unique and impressive crafts work. My city shall have multiple
entrances so that people from other countries or tourist can visit the city.

7
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
3.3 Significant city and details
A significant city shall be extraordinary, beautiful, interesting, safe to live and many others
factors. For a city to be significant, the city has to be memorable and functional to the people.
A significant city in the ancient times such as Athens was such a fascinating city with a
diverse culture but when there is a rise, there must be a fall. Due to a war, Athens beautiful
city was breaking and it is now preserved by UNESCO.
3.4 Conclusion
There are so many ancient cities in this world. In every country, their ancient cities are
different in their own ways. People can learn from the ancient cities mistakes and make a
better city for today.
4. Present cities
4.1 History
Present city is all over the country now. Present cities are built for business, government,
residential and many more purposes. Present cities such as Kuala Lumpur were built at 1857
and it is still standing tall now.
4.2 Present city I am focusing on
Montreal underground city is the city I am focusing on now. It is a one floor underground
city that has shopping malls, apartment buildings, hotel, bank, metro station and much more.
Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University
8
ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation
It can hold up to more than 500,000 people every day which is amazing.
4.3 Significant city and details
A present city which is significant shall be in stable condition and can keep up to the
technology and exist for many years without using military power. Cities in the present
should be peaceful without war and be in stable condition among citizens and governments.
4.4 Conclusion
Present cities are all over the world. Every country have their own designs and thinking in
making a city. Some may be lacking in transportation while others may be lacking in security
of the city. It is important to know and solve these issues to make a better future city.
4.5 Information or element that can be used to the future city
The element from Montreal underground city that I will use for my future city is the walking
ability, proper transportation and residential area.

5. Future city
5.1 History
There has been much discussion about future cities. In 2010, Japan has made blueprint for
the projects of revival of Japan for the 21st
century. The purpose was to improve the quality of
life of the people living in it.
5.2 Future city I am focusing on
The future city I am focusing on is the China future city plans. By 12 years, China will be a
whole new country with its new concept in their city. With electric taxis, architecturally
arresting airports and modern green skyscrapers, China is going to be the most advanced
country in the world.
5.3 Significant city and details
A future city is expected to be more advanced than the present city but more importantly, it
has to sustain more people, a larger population than the present city. This indicates that the
future city has to be much better and efficient than the present city.
5.4 Conclusion
The future city is undecided for now but in the future, cities shall be much more impressive,
eco-friendly, more residential areas and much more to discover.

6. Petaling Jaya city
6.1 History
Petaling Jaya was developed by the British due to the overpopulation in Kuala Lumpur in
1952. In 20th June 2006, Petaling Jaya was granted a city status.
6.2 People and population
The population in Petaling Jaya city is more than 500,000 people. The city has 3 main
religions in Malaysia which is the Malay, Chinese and Indian. As a result, the Chinese
population in Petaling Jaya is more than the others.
6.3 Cultural, needs and jobs
With 3 different cultural in a city, every culture will have their own celebrations and
thinking. The needs of the city are transportation, facilities and infrastructures. Jobs that are
needed in the city are business area, police, medics, teachers, chefs and many more.
6.4 Good future city
Better futures for Petaling Jaya are better transportation and roads to decrease the traffic
jams.
6.5 Conclusion
Petaling Jaya is a crowded city that has a lot of people living in it. Petaling Jaya could be
counted as a livable city

7. Sphyx City
7.1 Solution to create this new city
A brand new city needs people and buildings. A solution that provides everybody shelter,
food, work and entertainment is not easy. After finding out buildings that are needed for a
city, zoning of the city is needed. While zoning the city, transportation lines could be
decided.
7.2 Why is the city underground?
The city needs to be placed underground because of the global warming and climate
changes around the world. To avoid these disasters, an underground city could be built to
save people’s lives.
7.3 Zoning of the city
The zoning of the city will have residential area, education centre, business centre, food
court, sports centre, shopping centre, entertainment centre, government parliament, medical
centre, farm, religious area and tourism area.
7.4 Conclusion
The Sphyx city is going to be a livable city. The city will have interesting buildings and
attractions that will make the future bright.

8. Process and progress
The process and progress done are drawings with zonings, zoom in, layout and elevation.
With every week showing new drawings of the city, progress has been made. The process
was searching the internet for information and putting it into my city.

9. Conclusion
In the future of year 2033, anything is possible for the world to change. With this matter, we have to
prepare to search ways to build a new city for the future. Start off by buildings and then research to
reality.
From this project, I have learned that a city needs to be livable and sustainable. Other than that, my
research tells me that with all the technology in the world now, accomplishment to do the impossible
in the past and present might be accomplished in the future.

  • 4. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation Introduction This final project of elements of natural built and environment is to let students in foundation in natural and built environment to understand national topography, landscape, space, building and infrastructure. According to the project brief, every student has to choose a type of city to build. The city size is around 25 to 40 km2 and a population of 150,000 to 500,000. The main goal of this project is to understand the component and elements of a city and creating a better future city. Guidelines are given to do this project. In individual component, students are required to do a presentation and hand in a report. As for group, a presentation of a city with a model is required. I have to research cities and make a livable city of my own and present it out in the presentation. Data collection could be found in the World Wide Web. • 5. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 2. A City 2.1. Definition A city is a place that has culture, population and commerce. 2.2. History Cities in ancient times were mainly a central place for trading. Most cities in the old days were meant for business and trading centre. 2.3. What makes a city A city should have stationary population that does not migrate. A city also needs infrastructure. It needs buildings that have a purpose for the people. It needs a road or street to connect through places inside a city. Security can also make a city peaceful or dangerous. 2.4. What makes a good city There is no perfect city in this world. A good city shall have a stable economy, a convenient transport network, an efficient water supply and sanitation system, affordable housing, well education system and up-to date medical services. 2.5. Future city Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 5
  • 6. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation The purpose of having a future city is to increase the housing area and improve from the cities in the past. Mistakes from the past cities shall be changed and improved to make a better city for the people. Future city should also have more advanced technology and better education to increase the people’s knowledge. 3. Ancient cities 3.1 History The earliest cities could be found in Mesopotamia. Teotihuacan, a Mesoamerican city built in around 400 BC is located in Mexico. The city includes castles, residential buildings, communal and a palace. The other extraordinary ancient city is the Machu Picchu located in Peru. The city uses rock to build giant walls, terraces and ramps which preserved its natural environment. As for ancient underground cities, Derinkuyu underground city was opened in 1969. The city can accommodate to around 20,000 people. The entrance could be closed with a big rock as it is a stone door. The underground city was carved out with rocks which became a unique geological formation. Other than that, the linkage between each place in the underground city was extraordinary too. Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 6
  • 7. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 3.2 Ancient city I am focusing on The ancient city I have focused on is Petra. The entrance of Petra’s underground city is carved out and has a unique and impressive crafts work. My city shall have multiple entrances so that people from other countries or tourist can visit the city. Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 7
  • 8. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 3.3 Significant city and details A significant city shall be extraordinary, beautiful, interesting, safe to live and many others factors. For a city to be significant, the city has to be memorable and functional to the people. A significant city in the ancient times such as Athens was such a fascinating city with a diverse culture but when there is a rise, there must be a fall. Due to a war, Athens beautiful city was breaking and it is now preserved by UNESCO. 3.4 Conclusion There are so many ancient cities in this world. In every country, their ancient cities are different in their own ways. People can learn from the ancient cities mistakes and make a better city for today. 4. Present cities 4.1 History Present city is all over the country now. Present cities are built for business, government, residential and many more purposes. Present cities such as Kuala Lumpur were built at 1857 and it is still standing tall now. 4.2 Present city I am focusing on Montreal underground city is the city I am focusing on now. It is a one floor underground city that has shopping malls, apartment buildings, hotel, bank, metro station and much more. Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 8
  • 9. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation It can hold up to more than 500,000 people every day which is amazing. 4.3 Significant city and details A present city which is significant shall be in stable condition and can keep up to the technology and exist for many years without using military power. Cities in the present should be peaceful without war and be in stable condition among citizens and governments. 4.4 Conclusion Present cities are all over the world. Every country have their own designs and thinking in making a city. Some may be lacking in transportation while others may be lacking in security of the city. It is important to know and solve these issues to make a better future city. 4.5 Information or element that can be used to the future city The element from Montreal underground city that I will use for my future city is the walking ability, proper transportation and residential area. Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 9
  • 10. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 5. Future city 5.1 History There has been much discussion about future cities. In 2010, Japan has made blueprint for the projects of revival of Japan for the 21st century. The purpose was to improve the quality of life of the people living in it. 5.2 Future city I am focusing on The future city I am focusing on is the China future city plans. By 12 years, China will be a whole new country with its new concept in their city. With electric taxis, architecturally arresting airports and modern green skyscrapers, China is going to be the most advanced country in the world. 5.3 Significant city and details A future city is expected to be more advanced than the present city but more importantly, it has to sustain more people, a larger population than the present city. This indicates that the future city has to be much better and efficient than the present city. 5.4 Conclusion The future city is undecided for now but in the future, cities shall be much more impressive, eco-friendly, more residential areas and much more to discover. • 12. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 7. Sphyx City 7.1 Solution to create this new city A brand new city needs people and buildings. A solution that provides everybody shelter, food, work and entertainment is not easy. After finding out buildings that are needed for a city, zoning of the city is needed. While zoning the city, transportation lines could be decided. 7.2 Why is the city underground? The city needs to be placed underground because of the global warming and climate changes around the world. To avoid these disasters, an underground city could be built to save people’s lives. 7.3 Zoning of the city The zoning of the city will have residential area, education centre, business centre, food court, sports centre, shopping centre, entertainment centre, government parliament, medical centre, farm, religious area and tourism area. 7.4 Conclusion The Sphyx city is going to be a livable city. Kevin Lee Hee Xian| 0315192 | Group N | FNBE April 2013 | Taylor’s University 13
  • 14. ENBE | Final Project | Part A – Report | The Future City Representation 9. Conclusion In the future of year 2033, anything is possible for the world to change. With this matter, we have to prepare to search ways to build a new city for the future. Start off by buildings and then research to reality. From this project, I have learned that a city needs to be livable and sustainable. Other than that, my research tells me that with all the technology in the world now, accomplishment to do the impossible in the past and present might be accomplished in the future.
