PROVIDING SHELTER AND SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE • www.eveinc.org
Spring/Summer 2012
When does caring become
controlling? When does talking
become stalking? These are questions
asked by That’s Not Cool, a national
campaign to address teen dating
violence and abuse. EVE asks these
same questions to middle and high
school students in Ingham County
to address the prevalence of dating
violence in our community.
Teen dating violence is an issue that
has been gaining more awareness
in schools and at home as parents,
teens and educators are recognizing
the early warning signs of abuse.
EVE’s Teen Dating Violence Prevention
Education program is quickly
becoming a valuable resource for
educators as they seek out education
to promote healthy relationships.
EVE provides free presentations to
students in middle school and high
school on a variety of topics including
healthy relationships, dating
violence, bullying and abuse.
The goal of EVE’s Teen Dating Violence
Prevention Education program is to
empower students to think critically
about their relationships by providing
them with tools and tips to promote
healthy relationships and reduce the
incidence of dating violence.
Students participating in EVE’s Teen
Dating Violence program report an
increase in their understanding about
dating violence.
“You should be able to be yourself in
a healthy relationship.”
“Nobody has the right to abuse
anyone and nobody deserves to be
abused.”
EVE uses activities, video clips and
current media to engage students.
“I liked the presentation today.
Dating violence is a problem that
needs to be talked about.”
“Today you made this class
interesting even though it was about
abuse.”
Workshops and professional trainings
are also available for parents and
educators interested in learning
more about the dynamics of abuse.
Presentation topics can be flexible to
meet the needs of the group.

Dating Violence program can be found

3. As the Michigan economy continues to climb out of an
economic crisis, the need for domestic violence services are
on the rise. The National Institute of Justice, an agency of the
Department of Justice found that when unemployment rates go
up among men, so does violence against women. Regardless of
the state of the economy, the fact remains that one in every four
women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.
As EVE approaches its milestone 35th anniversary, it will
continue to meet and exceed the needs of domestic violence
victims in the community and will remain steadfast in its mission
to provide shelter and supportive services to victims of domestic
violence while seeking to end domestic violence through public
awareness and community education. EVE supports and provides a
much needed and valuable service to our community, and it is our
community that supports EVE’s success.
In closing, I want to personally thank the community -
the many volunteers, generous donors, corporate sponsors, law
enforcement agencies, legal and judicial venues, EVE leadership,
its volunteer Board of Directors, and the talented and committed
staff who continue to support EVE’s mission and its success in the
face of increasing needs for services during a period of continual
economic challenges.
Sincerely,
Richard Znidarsic

PROVIDING SHELTER AND SUPPORT FOR VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE • www.eveinc.org
Dear Friends,
Letter from EVE’s Board
President Richard Znidarsic
Message from the
Executive Director
In late December 2012, EVE will begin
its 35th year of service to survivors
of domestic violence. Looking back at
the history of the domestic violence
movement much has changed over the
years. Starting with the language that
we use; survivors of relationship violence
versus battered women. There is an
increased understanding of relationship
violence and recognition of experiences
among all groups; women, men, lesbian,
gay, and transgender individuals, teens
and older adults experience abuse by
intimate partners and family members.
It does not matter who you are, abuse
diminishes a sense of self that can only be
reclaimed with understanding and support
of others. Thank you to our kind and
generous donors who ensure EVE is here to
provide the support that victims need to
become survivors.
Susan Shoultz
Executive Director
Richard Znidarsic is the Vice President of Information Services at Accident Fund and
has an extensive background in Information Technology with more than 20 years
experience. Richard was elected as President of EVE’s Board of Directors in 2010.

6. HOPE | Spring 2012 | Page 3
The mission of the Office on Violence Against Women (OVW), a component of
the U.S. Department of Justice, is to provide federal leadership in developing
the nation’s capacity to reduce violence against women and administer justice
for and strengthen services to victims of domestic violence, dating violence,
sexual assault, and stalking.
OUR MISSION: EVE’s mission is to provide shelter and supportive services for the victims of domestic
violence while seeking to end domestic violence through public awareness and community education.
The Office of Violence Against Women helps communities build collaborative
responses to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. The
Safe Havens: Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Grant program provides
an opportunity for communities to support the supervised visitation and safe
exchange of children in situations involving domestic violence, dating violence,
child abuse, sexual assault or stalking.
EVE, Ingham County Friend of the Court and MSU Chance at Childhood have joined
together to facilitate safe exchange and supervised visitation. The program aims
to enhance security to domestic violence victims who share custody of their
children with an abusive partner.
According to the Office of Violence Against Women, “Visitation programs should
reflect a clear understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence, dating
violence, sexual assault and stalking; the impact of domestic violence on children;
and the importance of holding offenders accountable for their actions.”
Funding from the Office of Violence Against Women is helping EVE and community
partners in Ingham County create a safe and secure facility for supervised
visitation and exchange. The Ingham County Safe Havens collaborative has plans
to open the Oasis Family center in the upcoming months.
Abuse in Later Life
EVE, the City of Lansing and community
partners including the the Ingham
County Prosecutor’s Office, Lansing
Police Department, Tri County Office on
Aging and Adult Protective Services have
joined together to provide enhanced
training and services to end violence
and abuse in later life.
Individuals who are 50 years of age or
older may face unique barriers when
seeking assistance for elder abuse,
neglect and exploitation including
domestic violence, dating violence,
sexual assault or stalking.
Historically, domestic violence
and aging services have operated
independently with little or no
intersection of services. This initiative
has helped unite those agencies to
provide enhanced support and services
to victims of elder abuse.
Community partners, consisting
of representatives from nearly 30
agencies throughout Ingham County,
have joined together to discuss their
roles in providing support to victims
of elder abuse at monthly Community
Collaborative Response (CCR) meetings.
With input from CCR members, core
partners create a strategic plan to
address elder abuse in Ingham County.
One of the key components of the plan is
to provide training to service providers
working with older adults.
The Abuse in Later Life project along
with other federally funded programs
are provided by the Office of Violence
Safe Havens: Supervised Visitation
and Safe Exchange Grant Program
