• Within 20th century use of fossile combustible material increase 12-fold
• Digging for mineral resources increased 34-fold
• Use of raw materials within EC is per head 16 t/anno
• 6 t of it becomes waste
• 50% of waste = 3 t/head/anno becomes landfill
• EC Vision 2050 – with respect to the shortage of resources
• All resources have to be managed sustainable
• Raw-material, energy, water, air, land, soil
• Protection of climate has to be reached, biodiversity renewed
• We need an innovation wave
• water – productive and sustainable agriculture – raw-materials
• Lead indicator = resource productivity
• We must overcome barriers and
• Investigate markets, prices, taxes, subsidies regards correct costs
• WE must support sustainable thinking and close know how gaps
• A “green” model must support ecosystem (natural assets), economy
(produced and financial assets) and human being (social & human assets)

• We must:
• optimize products, consumer behavior, production (ecological
footprint, eco-design directive)
• manage waste as resource
• terminate inefficient subsidies and show real prices of resources like
water, air, ecosystems, biodiversity
• change taxation to the factor environment
• valuate ecosystem benefits according their real value
• finance biodiversity projects and ecosystem benefit projects
• manage sustainable biodiversity, water, raw-materials, air, land, soil, sea-
resources
• manage sustainable key resources like food/feed, construction, mobility
• develop optimized governance and control
• do more dialog, invest into transfer, define indicators and targets
• support resource efficiency international
• Agriculture and forestry are key elements within this resource efficiency
• Environmental caretaking is not only a burden, it delivers valuable services
• Only sustainability of each farm or forest enterprise supports the overall target

• We need sustainability performance figures
• what are the factors that give us the feedback weather we work
sustainable or not?
• we have to limit the factors to be investigated to key-factors
• we need to verify, measure and control these factors
• we need environmental decision support systems
• worldwide such a system is NOT in place yet
• ENVIROffice has a capability to do so
• it is modify and maintainable by local experts
• it has also GIS integrated
• it shows existing risks and
• It shows also how farmers can reduce these risks and
• it integrates a specific risk reduction work plan for farmers

• We need to understand the carrying capacity of a piece of land
• under sustainability targets and
• under the needs to get services from this piece of land
• under the need to get services for public and private participants
• Who will support this?
• Private landowners need social and environmental responsibility
• have to produce needed products like food/feed and
• have to produce needed services like nice landscapes, reduce
natural risks, increase quality and quantity of water, ……
• in general have to support also the “commons”
• a factory is not allowed to destroy the air from pollution and
• a farmer is not allowed to destroy the soil
• such services will be a combination of global targets, national
targets, regional targets and local targets
We need Professional, Technological, Organizational & Political answers

• Governing the “Commons”
• Elinor Ostrom – Nobel Price 2009,died 2012
• Main result:
• Institutionalized local cooperation of the persons concerned and
related to the commons is better then governmental institutions or
even private properties
• To solve problems – Elinor Ostrom recommended:
• Define borders
• Exclusion of non beneficiaries
• Resource rules must be local ones
• Beneficiaries work together on changing the rules
• Strict control of the rules
• Sanctions if doing wrong
• Conflict management mechanism
• Government has to accept self determination of working structure
• Commons must be managed like any other natural resource product
• With global, national, regional and local targets
• understanding if is a by product of agriculture or if to be managed separately
• With cost- and compensation models, control etc.

• Private farmers, Cooperatives, cooperative targets:
• Private farming family farmer are the driving factor for sustainable
management of land
• it supports holistic management and needs information and advise
• it needs to be supported by optimized information and ICT tools
• It needs incentives for an achievement of targets
• It needs fines for an intentionally wrong management
• It needs advisory teams(*) that
• Support, plan, implement and control these targets
• This needs training, education and capacity building on all levels
• Farmer – advisor – scientific expert of different sectors
• It needs in several cases common targets of groups of farmers
• It needs often common targets of all chain partners together and
• planning, evaluation, control and incentives or fines for a chain!
• (*) Denmark has 56 advisors by 1000 farmers, the rest of EC countries between 1 and 6

• Virtual farming as intelligent model to allow smallholders machine use

• Permanent forest inventory as fundament for a sustainable forestry
• Carbon sequestration as benefit model for agriculture and forestry
• Environment-optimization and risk-reduction as benefit model
• Economic, ecologic and value of the land valuation as control
