Global Privacy Compliance
As companies expand their global customer
base, understanding and adhering to local data
privacy and storage requirements becomes an
ever increasing demand and potential risk. Opt-in
requirements, the ability to view and edit profile
data and now the requirement to
store data in a given geographic region increase
the regulatory risk and cost of non-compliance
as fines and risk of reputational damage mount. Gigya is committed to helping our
customers ensure they can be remain in compliance as the global fabric of privacy
regulations continues to evolve and change.
On September 1, 2015, the Russian Federation’s Personal Data Protection Act went
into effect. The bill mandates that companies that maintain online properties serving
Russian citizens must store those citizens’ data within Russian borders.
About Data Residency
The new Russian law reflects a global trend toward governments demanding that
their citizens’ data reside locally. Consider the recent regulatory shakeup in the EU,
where the previous Safe Harbor Framework for securing U.S.—EU data transfers
was struck down and ultimately replaced with the more stringent Privacy Shield
agreement. While this trend is certainly contentious, it shows no sign of slowing
down. In fact, since NSA contractor Edward Snowden’s revelations about the
agency’s activities in 2013, about 20 countries have either proposed or discussed
potential laws which would require Internet data in those countries to remain within
their borders.
This is one reason why Gigya employs a multiple data center strategy: to ensure that
our customers avoid risk while delivering the seamless and trusted experiences that
today’s consumers demand. Gigya is committed to ensuring that all of our clients doing
business internationally can continue to do so while remaining in compliance with local
laws. In this light, Gigya has invested in operating a data center located in Russia.
