The concept of information as commodity is wider
than that of information as resource.
 From brush to bed
 From childhood to old age
 A man or a woman
 For educational or entrepreneurial
 Everybody needs information for better options.
“A wealth of information creates a poverty of
attention.”

 Information is a Major Criterion: Information is vital
for national development.
 Satisfies the Economic Principle: Information satisfies
the economic principles of generation or gathering,
processing, storage and dissemination
 Demand / Market: Information has a wider market. All
people need information for some purpose or the other.

 Information is saleable; it has cost of production and
profit making characteristics.
 It is consumable and needs protection.
 Like other goods Information is provided through books,
magazines, business news, investment, legal advice,
medical advice, consulting services, formal education
through school, colleges and universities
 It is regarded as a national resource like energy, coal,
water, etc

 Specialized information is made accessible to those
who have special needs.
 Information needs to be controlled, manipulated
and managed.
 Business typhoon says information is like an
inexhaustible and renewable source of energy.

 According to W. L. Saunders, information is that type of
resource which is not scarce.
 It has also economic value as when company uses the
information effectively, the level of trade and revenue
are maximized.
 Information and knowledge become the principal
generators of wealth in the form of educational
institutions of research and development.

 e-Publishing: is creating role reversals in the
publishing industry, large print quantities to keep
costs low
 Self publishing: is made easier with the Web: It
includes writing, publishing and marketing of
materials. without an e-commerce infrastructure
e-matter can attract visitors. e.g. Newsletters

 Print-on-demand will become widely available. Custom
printing will make every piece of content available in a
few minutes. Bookstores and libraries are offering this
service. It
 Helps in preventing waste and reduce deforestation.
 e-Zine : An electronic magazine usually focused on a
small subject area. e-Zines and newsletters exists for a
broad range of topics. e.g. Infojump , Fool.com , Slate.

 Facilities which are provided by a library by using books
and dissemination of information for the need and meet
the users' requirement.
 To facilitate users by personal attention
 To be helpful for searching and utilising information
sources in better way

Wide Web or Internet or Online.
 The Internet and its "publishing arm" the WWW are
important components in the communication process.
 The web is a client or server system used to access all kinds
of information to anyone on the net.
 The information can be in the form of regular text,
hypertext, pictures, sounds, Usenet newsgroups and other
types of data.
