This document summarizes the sustainability initiatives of a global refractories company. It discusses their approach to sustainability based on social, environmental and economic factors. It then highlights three key initiatives - installation of an effluent treatment plant to treat toxic waste, strengthening of health and safety systems to reduce accidents, and establishing a skills training center to provide vocational training and self-employment opportunities to local youth. It concludes by noting benefits like reduced CO2 emissions, lower energy consumption, and increased CSR spending as a percentage of earnings.
2. Approach to
Sustainability
We Follow a triple bottom line concept (Social, Environmental and
Economic) for organizational sustainability.
We stress on creating value for all stakeholders
Understanding and addressing the needs of our surrounding communities
is a priority.
Health, Safety and Environment Parameters should always be kept better
than statutory norms and hazards have to be reduced continually.
Strategic planning on growth through modernization and expansion,
innovation, raw material security, etc. to improve top and bottom line.
4. The Problem
Ensuring zero discharge of highly toxic effluent generated from Producer
gas plant.
Problem Description
Producer Gas is used as a primary fuel in our Thermal Units
Deep Brown Tarry water with a number of toxic agents are generated as
a waste product
The Tarry Water is difficult to treat and is a pollution threat.
Key Initiative
Installation of an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) to improve the outlet water
quality below the Central Pollution Control Board norms and 100% Reuse of
treated water in Plant Processes.
The Water Treatment process includes the following steps.
• Physical treatment
• Chemical treatment
• Biological treatment
• Ultrafiltration system
• Reverse osmosis
• Evaporation system
