The document summarizes a presentation given by the Managing Director of DuPont Philippines on food security challenges facing the Philippines and potential solutions. Key points include:
- The Philippines' population is growing rapidly and food security is one of its most pressing challenges in terms of affordability, availability, and quality/safety.
- Agriculture employs a large portion of the workforce but infrastructure limitations hamper farmers' access to markets.
- DuPont is applying its science and research to help maximize crop yields, enhance nutrition, reduce food waste, and improve food safety.
- Potential solutions discussed include improving infrastructure, boosting agricultural productivity through collaboration, and transferring specialized knowledge to local communities.
4. Food Security ‐ One of the pressing challenges for Malaysia
Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety
Malaysia food consumption makes up about 31%
share of household expenditures.
Agriculture and palm oil are two sectors to be
revitalized under the Economic Transformation
Program.
RM3.8 billion was allocated to boost agriculture
production to support the country’s National
Agrofood Agenda 2011‐2020.

5. The Economic Transformation Program and The National Agrofood
Agenda 2011‐2020
Excluding industrial crops such as palm oil and rubber,
agriculture contributed RM20.2 billion or about 4% of
Malaysia’s gross national income.
National Agrofoods Policy 2011‐2020 launched early 2012
include 4 new strategies; making sure national food
stocks are in good supply, and safe for consumption,
keeping the agrofoods industry competitive and
sustainable and boosting agricultural entrepreneurs'
income levels.
Under the 10th Malaysia Plan, the country has identified
16 entry point projects to revitalize this sector. Among
others:‐
Scaling up and strengthening productivity of
paddy farming in the Muda area.
Scaling up and strengthening productivity of
paddy farming in other irrigated areas.
Upgrading capabilities to produce fruit and
vegetable for premium markets. 5

Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety
Philippines food consumption makes up more
than 43.3% share of household expenditures.
Agriculture sector is made up of 4 sub‐sectors:
farming, fisheries, livestock and forestry which
together employ 39.8% of the labor force and
contribute 20% to the GDP.
Over 11 million people employed in agriculture
sector.
Food nutrition & sufficiency are in needs for the
Philippines’ growing population.

24. The Philippine Food Staples Self‐sufficiency Roadmap (FSSR)
2011‐2016
Oil price, climate change, unsustainable production and
rice intensification are factors that can dampen PH's
agricultural production.
A principle constraint that many poor farmers face in
becoming more productive and profitable is the lack of
adequate infrastructure, particularly rural roads and
irrigation.
Philippines low levels of infrastructure expenditure, as
low as 2.8% of GDP in 2002. This limits the access of
people to basic agricultural inputs, transport and
storage facilities and results in difficulties to access
markets.
For 2013, an infrastructure budget of over 400 billion
pesos ($9.6 billion) set aside to pursue major upgrades
of ports, airports, road and bridge networks to speed
up growth.

2. DuPont Pioneer hybrid corn P3482YR ‐ latest hybrid corn varieties, allow farmers to achieve
higher yields compared to old varieties.
3. P3482YR also boasts of excellent grain quality. Its golden yellow kernel color preferred by corn
traders. Farmers attributed ability to command a higher buying price per kilo to these qualities.
4. P3482YR can be harvested as early as 105‐108 days after planting, compared to other varieties,
which mature in four months time.
5. DuPont reaffirmed commitment in the Philippines corn industry with P1B investment of the
Pioneer Tarlac Production Plant which is the second seed production facility with the first at
Polomolok, South Cotabato.

the farm production materials on the proper use, mode of
action, target pest spectrum. Farm production efficiency
improved resulted to higher quality of crops and
commanded higher buying price.
4. Over 500 Barangay Health Workers and 5 thousand
farmers benefitted from the Emergency Management of

• Since 2002, we have been donating corn seeds and farming materials as well as giving
agronomy training to rural schools.
• Income from the harvested crop goes to the school lunch fund to help improve the
nutrition quality of the school lunches. needy students have sufficient and nutrition food
at their lunch.
• In a year, we conduct the program at approx 30-45 schools in 20 provinces in the north
and northeastern part of Thailand.
