Food Security ‐ One of the pressing challenges for Malaysia
Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety

Malaysia food consumption makes up about 31%
                                                 share of household expenditures.
Agriculture and palm oil are two sectors to be
                                                 revitalized under the Economic Transformation
                                                 Program.
RM3.8 billion was allocated to boost agriculture
production to support the country’s National

Excluding industrial crops such as palm oil and rubber,
agriculture contributed RM20.2 billion or about 4% of
                             Malaysia’s gross national income.
National Agrofoods Policy 2011‐2020 launched early 2012

stocks are in good supply, and safe for consumption,
keeping the agrofoods industry competitive and
                             sustainable and boosting agricultural entrepreneurs'
                             income levels.
Under the 10th Malaysia Plan, the country has identified
16 entry point projects to revitalize this sector. Among
                             others:‐
Scaling up and strengthening productivity of

Food Security Solutions
Food security solutions must be local ‐ due to variations in climate, soils, cultural
traditions, transportation/distribution infrastructure and economic viability

Solutions must be collaborative ‐ reached in concert with communities,
governments and NGOs who know the “facts on the ground,” and with business entities
who have the specialized expertise to help solve particular problems.

Science must become local wisdom ‐ know‐how must be brought to the people and
places that need it the most. This is accomplished by working side‐by‐side with all
involved to transfer knowledge to local communities.

Sustainability is key ‐ by focusing on specific local challenges, collaborating broadly
on solutions, and bringing the know‐how needed to bring those solutions to life.

Food Security ‐ One of the most pressing challenges for the Philippines
Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety

Philippines food consumption makes up more
than 43.3% share of household expenditures.
Agriculture sector is made up of 4 sub‐sectors:
farming, fisheries, livestock and forestry which
together employ 39.8% of the labor force and
                                            contribute 20% to the GDP.
Over 11 million people employed in agriculture
                                            sector.
Food nutrition & sufficiency are in needs for the
                                            Philippines’ growing population.

The Philippine Food Staples Self‐sufficiency Roadmap (FSSR)
    2011‐2016
Oil price, climate change, unsustainable production and
rice intensification are factors that can dampen PH's
                             agricultural production.
A principle constraint that many poor farmers face in
becoming more productive and profitable is the lack of
adequate infrastructure, particularly rural roads and
                             irrigation.
Philippines low levels of infrastructure expenditure, as
low as 2.8% of GDP in 2002. This limits the access of
people to basic agricultural inputs, transport and
storage facilities and results in difficulties to access
                             markets.
For 2013, an infrastructure budget of over 400 billion
pesos ($9.6 billion) set aside to pursue major upgrades
of ports, airports, road and bridge networks to speed
                             up growth.

                                                                                    24

Philippine Food Security

The Bureau of Food and Drugs or BFAD of the Department of
Health, has identified several food safety concerns ‐
microbiological contamination, presence of food contaminants,
use of non‐permissible food additives and use of food additives
                 beyond allowable limits.
DOH through the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) undertakes
measures to address concerns ‐ continuous assessment of Good
Manufacturing Practices and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control
                 Points or HACCP for compliance.
The BFAD is also engaged in the review and development of
                 food standards.

Thailand Food Security

As an agriculture-based country, Thailand has great
                               potential for food production.

Government has established a policy to develop Thailand
as the “Kitchen of the World”.

Thailand is the 13th largest food exporter in the world.

No. 1 exporter for rice, tapioca, and canned pineapple,
and No.3 for sugar. 60% of total export value comes from
                               food and agriculture.

Thailand food consumption makes up 33% share of
                               household expenditures.1

Thai food plays an important part in contributing to the
                               Thai economy.

17% of Thai population is malnourished.2

10% of Thai children has protein and starch deficiency3

Maximizing the yields of seeds through sustainable farming
practices
We are working to develop sustainable solutions for farmers that drive yield through more
efficient and sustainable use of water, nutrients, and soil, and through herbicide tolerance
and resistance to pests and diseases

    Corn for School Lunch Program
     • Since 2002, we have been donating corn seeds and farming materials as well as giving
       agronomy training to rural schools.
     • Income from the harvested crop goes to the school lunch fund to help improve the
nutrition quality of the school lunches. needy students have sufficient and nutrition food
       at their lunch.
     • In a year, we conduct the program at approx 30-45 schools in 20 provinces in the north
       and northeastern part of Thailand.
     • At the end of 2011, a collective income of more than THB 11 million (or USD 392,220)
has benefitted rural schools in Thailand

                                                                                                    49

Sustainable Practices for Ethnic Corn Farmers in
    Northern Thailand
     • We introduced corn hybrid seeds and sustainable farming
practices to 40 hill tribe communities of farmers in the north of
       Thailand.
     • The farmers can increase yield and get higher income and better
       quality of life.

                                                                           50

   about good farming practices.

Every year DuPont in Thailand provides
training on safe use to approx 30,000
   farmers nationwide.

Food Security - One of the key sustainable growth
    considerations for Vietnam
Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety

                                         Vietnam food consumption makes up
more than 50% share of household
                                         expenditures.

                                         Agricultural sector plays an important
                                         role in ensuring food security.

21% of country GDP comes from
                                         agriculture sector.

Vietnam is world’s leading rice exporter.

Vietnam continues to face challenges in
                                         addressing the nutrition needs.

National Food Security Plan 2020

The country will need 50.3 million tons of
food including 32.1 million tons of rice in
                          2015.
A minimum of 3.8 million ha of land has
been set aside for rice cultivation up to
                          2020.
                          Strengthening research and the
                          application of technology and reducing

Maximizing the yields of seeds through sustainable farming
practices

    Rice-After-Shrimp Farming System
     • In Vietnam, rice is grown in the rainy season and shrimp is farmed
in the dry season. Farming both of these on the same field
       presents unique challenges.
     • DuPont developed PHB71, a rice hybrid that can better withstand
       salty soil
     • Local rice farmers have experienced great success with the seeds.

                                                                            67

    “DuPont Farm Model Project” Launch
A collaboration project to educate farmers on good sustainable
farming practices for high rice production output while maintaining
    environmental stewardship and safety.
The pilot project will be carried out in the North Vietnam,
at Thanh Hoa Province, by Q4 2012.

                                                                          68
Protecting fields against pests
and disease

We are working side-by-side with farmers
supporting them to access tools and
   technologies to grow food sustainably.

   We collaborate with public organizations
and our business partners to transfer
technology to farmers and educate them
   about good farming practices.

Every year DuPont in Vietnam provides
training on safe use to approx 75,000
   farmers nationwide.

                                                                                  70
Reducing waste by diagnostic testing and packaging
technology to protect food from contaminants and decay

                          DuPont creates unique packaging
                          technologies and materials that
                          speed production, reduce cost, and
minimize the impact of packaging on
                          the environment.

                          We also provide food safety
                          diagnostic technology that can
reduce the impact of pathogens and
                          other unwanted organisms in food

Food Security Solutions Food security solutions must be local ‐ due to variations in climate, soils, cultural traditions, transportation/distribution infrastructure and economic viability Solutions must be collaborative ‐ reached in concert with communities, governments and NGOs who know the “facts on the ground,” and with business entities who have the specialized expertise to help solve particular problems. Science must become local wisdom ‐ know‐how must be brought to the people and places that need it the most. This is accomplished by working side‐by‐side with all involved to transfer knowledge to local communities. Sustainability is key ‐ by focusing on specific local challenges, collaborating broadly on solutions, and bringing the know‐how needed to bring those solutions to life. 11 © National Geographic image

Food Security ‐ One of the most pressing challenges for the Philippines Assessment through Affordability, Availability, and Quality & Safety Philippines food consumption makes up more than 43.3% share of household expenditures. Agriculture sector is made up of 4 sub‐sectors: farming, fisheries, livestock and forestry which together employ 39.8% of the labor force and contribute 20% to the GDP. Over 11 million people employed in agriculture sector. Food nutrition & sufficiency are in needs for the Philippines’ growing population. 23 2 3
  • 24. The Philippine Food Staples Self‐sufficiency Roadmap (FSSR) 2011‐2016 Oil price, climate change, unsustainable production and rice intensification are factors that can dampen PH's agricultural production. A principle constraint that many poor farmers face in becoming more productive and profitable is the lack of adequate infrastructure, particularly rural roads and irrigation. Philippines low levels of infrastructure expenditure, as low as 2.8% of GDP in 2002. This limits the access of people to basic agricultural inputs, transport and storage facilities and results in difficulties to access markets. For 2013, an infrastructure budget of over 400 billion pesos ($9.6 billion) set aside to pursue major upgrades of ports, airports, road and bridge networks to speed up growth. 24 2 4
  • 25. Philippine Food Security The Bureau of Food and Drugs or BFAD of the Department of Health, has identified several food safety concerns ‐ microbiological contamination, presence of food contaminants, use of non‐permissible food additives and use of food additives beyond allowable limits. DOH through the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) undertakes measures to address concerns ‐ continuous assessment of Good Manufacturing Practices and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points or HACCP for compliance. The BFAD is also engaged in the review and development of food standards. 25 © National Geographic image
