52. 19 2010 An Introduction to Services & References Selected Waste Management References in ME Al-Hasa Environmental Study, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (2010-2011)As one project component, COWI established baseline information about the current waste management system in Al-Hasa Municipality. COWI carried out a waste characterization survey and provided recommendations on how to upgrade the existing system , identified appropriate waste handling technologies and equipment etc. HSE Plan & Hazards Risk Assessment for Medical Waste Collection and Transportation, UAE (2010)For the Lebanese waste operator Averda, COWI carried out an Health, Safety and Environmental Plan covering medical waste collection and transportation. To identify health hazards, an risk assessment matrix and action plan on mitigation measures was developed. Electronic Waste Survey, UAE (2009)On behalf of a confidential electronics producer, COWI carried out an e-waste survey to map legislative waste treatment requirements, key stakeholders in the e-waste sector etc. Solid Waste Landfill - Environmental Impacts Assessment, Qatar (2008-ongoing) COWI is preparing an EIA for Mesaieed Industrial City's solid waste landfill is to handle 15,5003/month of industrial non-hazardous waste and 3,400 m3/month of domestic waste. Assessment of Landfill in Riyadh, Kingdom (2006)On behalf of Riyadh Municipality, COWI completed a landfill assessment with particular focus on landfill gas risks and potential utilisation of the gas. Strategic Framework for Private Sector Participation in Municipal Solid Waste Management, Jordan (2004-2005)COWIanalysed and evaluated the existing situation of the private-sector participation in municipal solid waste services and identified weaknesses and gaps. 81. 2010 An Introduction to Services & References How much energy can be obtained from municipal waste? Average heat value of waste is app. 10.5 MJ/kg On average waste consists of app. 45% household waste and app. 55% industrial waste Thermal efficiency of new facilities app. 90% 1 ton of waste produces app. 0,7 MWh of electricity (~25%) and app. 2,0 MWh of district heating (~75%) 27
82. 2010 An Introduction to Services & References Energy from Waste in DenmarkSome highlights Plants owned by municipalities, inter-municipal companies or district heating/energy companies Extensive authority regulation of waste management and energy production Denmark the first European country to ban landfill of waste suitable for incineration App. 25% of the generated waste is incinerated, the rest recycled or landfilled (app. 7%) - Countries with much application of WtE are the most successful recyclers Lowest gate fee in European, due to efficient plants and high revenue stream from sale of heat and power 28
83. 2010 An Introduction to Services & References Energy from Waste in DenmarkSome highlights More than 100 years of experience with waste incineration in Denmark. First WtE plant 1904 at Frederiksberg, producing heat for the nearby hospital 30 MSW plants and 2 hazardous waste plants, treating some 3.5 mio. Tonnes per year Practically fully optimised energy efficiency 29
