2. Overview
* 2088 people :
- 888 permanent staff including 264 research academics
- 444 student researchers
- 869 other students
* 15 research centers
* 4 sites :
- Paris - Fontainebleau
- Evry - Sophia Antipolis

3. A Parisian School
* The School and the Maison des Mines (students’ residence) are
located in the heart of the Latin Quarter and are linked to all train
stations and airports
* Dynamic extra-scholastic activities provided by a wide range of
associations: students’ union, sports association, junior enterprise
club, forum and various cultural clubs...
4. 6 Training Programs
* Corps des Mines (16 students): top-ranking graduates from the École
Polytechnique, the École des Mines and the École Normale Supérieure
* Ingénieurs civils des Mines (146 students): admitted to the first year
from the «classes préparatoires» and to the second year from the École
Polytechnique and French and foreign universities
* Masters programmes (46 students): Bachelor’s degree
* Specialized training courses/Mastères (174 students): graduate
engineers or equivalent
* Doctorate students (97): Master’s degree or equivalent
* Institut Supérieur des Techniques (13 students): high-grade
technicians with five years of professional experience

5. Strong Links with Industry
* 30 million euros of research contracts annually
(approximately 1,000 contracts)
* Some 30 companies set up thanks to the School during the last 5 years:
Exalead, Intempora…
* 5 million euros annually in licences
* 70 patents managed by ARMINES
* 2006 Carnot Label

6. Academic Excellence
* 90 theses, 400 articles or books published
annually
* Laboratories run jointly with the French
National Center for Scientific Research
(CNRS), École Polytechnique, École des Ponts
et Chaussées, École de Techniques Avancées,
the French National Institute for Research in
Computer Science and Control (INRIA)…
* Partnerships with foreign universities
* Scientific evaluation and guidance
committees

7. Broad, Non-Specialized
Training
* Through its range of pluridisciplinary courses, the School trains non-
specialized engineers who are able to deal with every aspect - whether
technical, scientific, sociological, economic or ethical - of a complex problem
or an industrial project
* The training program brings into play on 15 research centers, ranging from
applied mathematics to the social sciences, and including energy studies, earth
sciences and the environment, and materials
* Considerable attention is given to economics and the social sciences in
combination with industry and the highest academic achievement (the Nobel
Prize for Economics awarded in 1988 to Maurice Allais, a graduate of and
former professor at the École des Mines)

8. A Partnership with
Industry Unique of Its Kind
* Ranking first among the higher institutes of engineering and management
and the universities for research under contract with companies (30 million
euros)
* 1,000 contracts with 200 companies, including 30% with foreign partners
* The School is under the supervision of the Ministry in charge of industry
* A substantial number of research academics and contributors from the
business world
* Participation of companies in the School’s decision-making bodies
* Approximately 60% of postgraduate students enter a company after
completion of their thesis
Figures : 2009
9. Limited students per year
Quality student counceling
* Individual supervision of students is provided in
all the training programs
* All faculty members are actively engaged in
research in order to adapt their teaching to the
advance of knowledege and new techniques in their
field of specialization
10. Creative Thinking
* The Acte d’entreprendre enables all student
engineers to carry out a project which they
themselves have initially defined.
* Thanks to two company incubators, a student
planning a start-up can achieve the practical
realization of his project in the most favorable
conditions.
* The School inspired the creation of the Sophia
Antipolis center and has contributed to setting up
some 30 companies over the last 5 years.
11. An International Outlook
* Nearly 36% of all our students come from abroad
* A placement with a company outside France and a sound
command of two foreign languages are compulsory
requirements
* As a member of ParisTech, the School participates in
networks which bring together the leading higher education
institutions in Europe (Leuven network, Cesaer)
* Of the 30 million euros of research contracts, 30% involve
institutions and industrial enterprises outside France
Figures : 2009
12. Varied Professionnal
Opportunities
* Out of the last two classes of graduates:
- 24% are pursuing their career abroad
- 54% in industry
- 43% in the service sector
* Former graduates have become the CEO’s of major
conglomerates such as Renault, PSA, EADS, Lafarge, Sagem,
Thales, Alstom, Rhodia, Saint-Gobain, Total…
* Des Directors of Research Institutes: IFP, Onera, CNES,
LNE, Ademe, Andra, IRSN
* Two Nobel Prizewinners:
- Maurice Allais, Economics, 1988
- Georges Charpak, Physics, 1992
