Editor’s Note
Stand your ground online!
How long can this dysfunctional EU last? Reform is required but there seems no appetite for it.
The gambling news from Europe always appears to be negative, the latest big issue being the
implementation of new EU VAT regulations. On the other hand, the interactive gaming market is a
growing and valuable segment of the digital economy. It is estimated to be worth €26.1billion in
2013, with a predicted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1% to 2018.
This growth has been driven by the rapid expansion of smartphones and tablets, the increasing
consumer confidence in effective and low-cost payment methods as well as by the expanding
customer demographic.
Consistency is a term that usually suits neither the online gaming industry nor the drivers behind it. But in times of high competition, roughly
embattled market shares, low margins and a fast increasing gap between the players, consistency is required more than ever. Finding a way to
stabilize and compete with other operators is an essential road-map that every National Operator must have as part of their immediate strategy.
In challenging times being idle is not an option. With consumers in Europe searching beyond national borders for online gaming services, it is
more than evident for national providers to be as competitive as they can be. Start establishing road-maps to effectively compete, grow, protect
and innovate! Start standing your ground!
Welcome to the close-door National Lottery Forum 2015.

  • 2. Editor’s Note Stand your ground online! How long can this dysfunctional EU last? Reform is required but there seems no appetite for it. The gambling news from Europe always appears to be negative, the latest big issue being the implementation of new EU VAT regulations. On the other hand, the interactive gaming market is a growing and valuable segment of the digital economy. It is estimated to be worth €26.1billion in 2013, with a predicted compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1% to 2018. This growth has been driven by the rapid expansion of smartphones and tablets, the increasing consumer confidence in effective and low-cost payment methods as well as by the expanding customer demographic. Consistency is a term that usually suits neither the online gaming industry nor the drivers behind it. But in times of high competition, roughly embattled market shares, low margins and a fast increasing gap between the players, consistency is required more than ever. Finding a way to stabilize and compete with other operators is an essential road-map that every National Operator must have as part of their immediate strategy. In challenging times being idle is not an option. With consumers in Europe searching beyond national borders for online gaming services, it is more than evident for national providers to be as competitive as they can be. Start establishing road-maps to effectively compete, grow, protect and innovate! Start standing your ground! Welcome to the close-door National Lottery Forum 2015.
