Will the iPhone commercial be as outdated in 5 or 10 years as much as this image or the previous commercials.
Change. In reviewing the commercials through the years, we see tremendous change. But what has driven the change? The consumer world has evolved, but has the business world? The reference to “business” were the 1980’s (hard hat worker and judge on the go), and the 1999 Nokia reference to email and “your companies news” . Fact is, the rate of change on the consumer side has far outpaced the change on the business side. You would never see a consumer walking down the street with a giant 1980’s style phone, but you still see delivery people with giant rugged scanners. There are technical reasons for this, not the least of which is the need for industrial strength hardware and large data in offline mode, but these are very specialized cases –the fact is that business apps and the business usage of smartphones is lagging.
While on the consumer side, we expect the phone to be all of the things in this image, library, encyclopedia, game console, multimedia player, maps, camera, news feed, and oh by the way, phone – the business world still scoffs at the idea that their IT department will deliver the useful business apps. WHY? The expectation of the consumer is to have tremendous value for free or .99, but a true business app is impossible….
Over the past 2 years I’ve participated in several entrepreneurial groups, white papers and customer interviews. The prevailing feedback is that business apps are lagging. You can get a very quick answer when asking what someone’s favorite app is – Facebook, Flipboard, Sports apps, games. Very rarely, if ever, will you hear someone say “my company sales dashboard” or “the work order system at work where I can see what my week looks like”. Most clients will tell a story about how the IT department put a Device Management app on their phone and everything slowed down, or their data gets cutoff, or they cant install apps that they want. That is their impression of what their business apps are. Why? There are a lot of reasons, we can pick out any of them and explore, Large IT investments in ERP or CRM systems that cost too much and hampered progress, security comes up a lot as a deterrent to business apps, but when it comes down to it, all of the reason typically come down to 3 things….
Consultants
IT projects in an enterprise are hard and complex. Software, Hardware, Security, Integration, Network, Storage, Support. It’s hard and its…
EXPENSIVE
AND IT’S TIME CONSUMING
Driven by billable hours and large IT consulting fees, complex IT budgets, and the fact that somewhere along the line, IT became the decision maker on what the business needed.
