CARLOS ALBIZU UNIVERSITYSAN JUAN CAMPUS<br />MASTER SYLLABUS<br />PSYF 677:  SOCIO-CULTURAL BASES OF BEHAVIOR IN PUERTO RICO<br />CREDITS: 3CONTACT HOURS: 45<br />COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />Pertinent information in Puerto Rico such as population, migration and immigration, urbanism, employment, industrialization, housing and modernization and major social problems will be reviewed.  Relevant research concerning these topics will be analyzed in the existing literature.  Course content explores how rapid changes in the identified indicators in Puerto Rico, have affected interpersonal relationships, human development and the maintenance of beliefs and social mores.  A socio-historical analysis will be emphasized.<br />PRE-REQUISITES<br />PSYF-506 <br />COURSE OBJECTIVES<br />The basic objective of this course is to inform the student how the socio cultural structures of the Puerto Rican society affect or influence human behavior.  The following are the specific objectives of this course.  The students will be familiarized with the principal theories and models that attempt to explain social change.  The students will learn how socio-political and cultural changes in the history of Puerto Rico affect current behavior.  The students will be able to explain the interrelationship between culture and personality.  The students will be able to perform a critical-analysis of current research on social problems in Puerto Rico.  The students will be able to develop an integrated vision of the principal social problems that affect Puerto Rico and suggest possible solutions to them.  Finally the students will explain the influence of social beliefs and social mores on the behavior of the Puerto Rican population.  <br />Ph.D. students will review research articles to understand the basic hypotheses presented, the research design used, and how the investigator articulated the analyses and conclusions.  Other psychology students enrolled will review and understand a research article. <br />Required Text Books: <br />This course do not require an unique text book due to the nature of the course multiple books and articles of the Puerto Rican culture are assigned by <br />           class unit<br />ITINERARY OF CLASS UNITS<br />Unit 1:  Introduction to the course (objectives and the requirements).  Definition and theoretical frameworks associated with social change, social organization and disorganization (January 12, 2009).<br />Unit 2:Socio-demographic and mental health characteristics of the Puerto Rican population, including socio-demographic research data of alternative lifestyles subpopulations (i.e., disable, elders, gay and lesbian) (January 19 & 26, 2009).<br />Unit 3:  Socio-economic development in Puerto Rico and its influence on Puerto Rican behavioral patterns (February 2 & 9, 2009).<br />Unit 4:  Political developments and their influence on Puerto Rican behavioral patterns (February 16, 2009).<br />Unit 5:  Art as an important manifestation of Puerto Rican society (February 23, 2009).<br />Unit 6:  Midterm examination (March 2, 2009).<br />Unit 7:  Puerto Rican folkloric systems:  A socio-psychological analysis (March 9, 2009).<br />Unit 8:  Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico:  poverty, crime & drug-addiction, and major mental health problems (March 23, 2009).<br />Unit 9:  Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico: AIDS, “machismo”, domestic violence, political corruption, and insensibility toward disabled population and major mental health problems (March 30, 2009).<br />Unit 10: Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico: Modernization, industrialization, and urbanism (April 6, 2009).<br />Unit 11:The assimilation problem (April 13, 2009).<br />Unit 12: Delivery of mental health services to the Puerto Rican population (April 20, 2009).<br />Unit 13: The future of Puerto Rico (April 27, 2009).<br />Unit 14: Final Examination (May 4, 2009).<br />COURSE CONTACT HOURS <br />Professors who teach the course must divide the contact hours the following way:<br />Face-to-face time in the classroom must not be less than 40 hours (16 classes, 2.5 hours each class).<br />For the remaining hours 5 hours), students will conduct research projects or homework outside the classroom.  These projects or homework will include, analyze movies of the Puerto Rican history and describe their psychosocial impact. <br />METHODOLOGY<br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific methodology.  These methodologies could include, but would not be limited to:  conferences by the professor, group discussions of assigned readings, class research projects, student presentations, individual meetings with students and sub-groups in the classroom.<br />EDUCATIONAL TECHNIQUES<br /> <br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific educational techniques.  These techniques could include, but are not limited to:  debates, practical demonstrations, films, videos, simulations, slide shows and forums.<br />EVALUATION<br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific evaluation criteria.  These methodologies could include, but would not be limited to:  term papers, projects, literature reviews, exams and class presentations.  Class attendance is mandatory for all students.  <br />RESEARCH COMPETENCIES<br />All students will review research projects conducted in Puerto Rico that addresses socio-cultural problems (i.e., units 2 and 3). Psy.D. students will review the literature and present a critical analysis.  Ph.D. students will discuss the research design and methodology used in those studies. All students will discuss the main conclusions presented in those articles.    <br />ATTENDANCE POLICY<br />Class attendance is mandatory for all students.  After two unexcused absences, the student will be dropped from the class, unless the professor recommends otherwise. CARLOS ALBIZU UNIVERSITYSAN JUAN CAMPUS<br />MASTER SYLLABUS<br />PSYF 677: SOCIO-CULTURAL BASES OF BEHAVIOR IN PUERTO RICO<br />CREDITS: 3CONTACT HOURS: 45<br />COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />Pertinent information in Puerto Rico such as population, migration and immigration, urbanism, employment, industrialization, housing and modernization and major social problems will be reviewed. Relevant research concerning these topics will be analyzed in the existing literature. Course content explores how rapid changes in the identified indicators in Puerto Rico, have affected interpersonal relationships, human development and the maintenance of beliefs and social mores. A socio-historical analysis will be emphasized.<br />PRE-REQUISITES<br />PSYF-506 <br />COURSE OBJECTIVES<br />The basic objective of this course is to inform the student how the socio cultural structures of the Puerto Rican society affect or influence human behavior. The following are the specific objectives of this course. The students will be familiarized with the principal theories and models that attempt to explain social change. The students will learn how socio-political and cultural changes in the history of Puerto Rico affect current behavior. The students will be able to explain the interrelationship between culture and personality. The students will be able to perform a critical-analysis of current research on social problems in Puerto Rico. The students will be able to develop an integrated vision of the principal social problems that affect Puerto Rico and suggest possible solutions to them. Finally the students will explain the influence of social beliefs and social mores on the behavior of the Puerto Rican population. <br />Ph.D. students will review research articles to understand the basic hypotheses presented, the research design used, and how the investigator articulated the analyses and conclusions. Other psychology students enrolled will review and understand a research article. <br />Required Text Books: <br />This course do not require an unique text book due to the nature of the course multiple books and articles of the Puerto Rican culture are assigned by <br /> class unit<br />ITINERARY OF CLASS UNITS<br />Unit 1: Introduction to the course (objectives and the requirements). Definition and theoretical frameworks associated with social change, social organization and disorganization (January 12, 2009).<br />Unit 2:Socio-demographic and mental health characteristics of the Puerto Rican population, including socio-demographic research data of alternative lifestyles subpopulations (i.e., disable, elders, gay and lesbian) (January 19 & 26, 2009).<br />Unit 3: Socio-economic development in Puerto Rico and its influence on Puerto Rican behavioral patterns (February 2 & 9, 2009).<br />Unit 4: Political developments and their influence on Puerto Rican behavioral patterns (February 16, 2009).<br />Unit 5: Art as an important manifestation of Puerto Rican society (February 23, 2009).<br />Unit 6: Midterm examination (March 2, 2009).<br />Unit 7: Puerto Rican folkloric systems: A socio-psychological analysis (March 9, 2009).<br />Unit 8: Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico: poverty, crime & drug-addiction, and major mental health problems (March 23, 2009).<br />Unit 9: Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico: AIDS, “machismo”, domestic violence, political corruption, and insensibility toward disabled population and major mental health problems (March 30, 2009).<br />Unit 10: Major psychosocial problems that affect Puerto Rico: Modernization, industrialization, and urbanism (April 6, 2009).<br />Unit 11:The assimilation problem (April 13, 2009).<br />Unit 12: Delivery of mental health services to the Puerto Rican population (April 20, 2009).<br />Unit 13: The future of Puerto Rico (April 27, 2009).<br />Unit 14: Final Examination (May 4, 2009).<br />COURSE CONTACT HOURS <br />Professors who teach the course must divide the contact hours the following way:<br />Face-to-face time in the classroom must not be less than 40 hours (16 classes, 2.5 hours each class).<br />For the remaining hours 5 hours), students will conduct research projects or homework outside the classroom. These projects or homework will include, analyze movies of the Puerto Rican history and describe their psychosocial impact. <br />METHODOLOGY<br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific methodology. These methodologies could include, but would not be limited to: conferences by the professor, group discussions of assigned readings, class research projects, student presentations, individual meetings with students and sub-groups in the classroom.<br />EDUCATIONAL TECHNIQUES<br /> <br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific educational techniques. These techniques could include, but are not limited to: debates, practical demonstrations, films, videos, simulations, slide shows and forums.<br />EVALUATION<br />The professor who offers the course will select the specific evaluation criteria. These methodologies could include, but would not be limited to: term papers, projects, literature reviews, exams and class presentations. Class attendance is mandatory for all students. <br />RESEARCH COMPETENCIES<br />All students will review research projects conducted in Puerto Rico that addresses socio-cultural problems (i.e., units 2 and 3). Psy.D. students will review the literature and present a critical analysis. Ph.D. students will discuss the research design and methodology used in those studies. All students will discuss the main conclusions presented in those articles. <br />ATTENDANCE POLICY<br />Class attendance is mandatory for all students. After two unexcused absences, the student will be dropped from the class, unless the professor recommends otherwise. When a student misses a class, he/she is responsible for the material presented in class. <br />AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA)<br />Students that need special accommodations should request them directly to the professor during the first week of class.<br />COURSE UNITS<br />UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE (OBJECTIVES AND <br /> REQUIREMENTS). In addition, students will explain how these characteristics influence behavioral patterns in Puerto Rico.<br />LEARNING OBJECTIVES:<br />Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:<br />Describe the historic trajectory of the socio-economic development of Puerto Rico and explain how it affects the behavioral patterns in Puerto Rico.<br /> 2. Identify major issues within the historic trajectory of the socio-economic development of Puerto Rico.<br />3. Explain how the economy is related to social and mental health <br /> problems.<br />4. Compare and contrast the main economic theories that explain social values.<br />5.
