Agile development is speeding the creation of new software, but what about deployment and production. Ops needs to be agile, too. This SlideShare introduces the concept of “Agile Ops” by updating the old fable of the Tortoise and the Hare.
The Tortoise and the Hare now work in IT -- the Tortoise in Ops (“Slow and Steady wins the race”) and the Hare in Dev (he’s become an Agile developer). Old rivalries remain, until the Tortoise and the Hare discover they would be more successful if they worked together to build and deploy the apps their customers demand.

2. It’s the 21st Century, so the Tortoise
and the Hare work in IT now.
(The forest being cleared long ago to make way
for a gleaming new corporate office park.
3. The Tortoise works in Ops (of course).
Slow and Steady wins the race.
“We need a stable platform, 100% availability.
No changes allowed, unless fully vetted and
documented.”
4. The Hare, chastened by his loss and
now working in Dev, has been learning
some new skills.
He’s into agile development and continuous
delivery, all to support a fast, iterative
production of new apps for the business.
“Fast and Consistent will always beat Slow and
Steady.”
5. Trouble was, both the Tortoise and the
Hare forgot about the Users.
They needed to be both fast and stable to
ensure a great user experience.
“Did you hear something?”
“Yeah, Kind of like a muffled sound?”
The Tortoise and the Hare soon realized they
were both about to lose the software race.
6. The Tortoise and the Hare discovered
they would be more successful if they
worked together. Faster, and better …
Delivering a high-quality user experience, fast-
cycling and scaling to support business growth
required both Dev and Ops working together.
“Oh, I get it. Now you’re the Tortoise and the
Hair.”
7. On race day, the Tortoise and the Hare
were a team. They had … SPEED
They matched the pace of continuous delivery
with fast troubleshooting, end-to-end
transaction visibility, and speedy resolution
times.
8. They had … QUALITY
The Tortoise and the Hare collaborated to
ensure a high-quality customer experience by
monitoring during pre-production and catching
problems early.
9. They had … SCALE
By unifying monitoring, the Tortoise and the
Hare helped “future proof” the business by
supporting highly scalable cloud architecture,
big data, and modern applications – all without
being swamped by alert storms.
10. Agile operations help win the
Application Ecomony.
WHEN …
45% Operations is active in new product development
34% Operations and Development share in release sign-
offs
38% Operations and Development are now co-located
43% Development is required to participate in
deployment
THEN 66% Say application quality has now improved
11. Stop the race between Dev and Ops.
In an age when less than perfect doesn’t cut it
and business models are changing to win in the
new app economy, you need to be on top of
your game.
