Johannes Gutenberg was a German goldsmith and inventor who introduced modern book printing to Europe in the 15th century. He was the first to use movable type printing, around 1439. Project Gutenberg was founded in 1971 and aims to make books in the public domain freely available online. It holds over 30,000 titles in its digital library in many languages. Gutenberg invented the printing press, which allowed texts to be printed more quickly and cheaply than by hand copying. His printing technology spread widely and transformed the spread of information.
