• Reflection Letter

• My Technology expertise before I enrolled the educational technology program was very
limited. I could barely operate the office suite 2007, and some other managerial software
programs related to my academic degree. Many times I had to ask for help to open and use
certain programs. I remember this one time that I was unable to upload a Power Point
presentation, and it was frustrating to go over tutorials at midnight, just so I could solve the
problem and submit the assignment. At some point I thought new technology just was not for
me. Some other day I was about to throw in the towel when I could not save the changes
made in another Power Point presentation, so I had to copy the slides and rename it to do so.
At that point I thought that I just was done with technology, and I just “had had it” with
technology. Then, one day when I was getting some personal information at the “graduate
studies” office, I saw the EDTC program advertising, and I saw the core courses, and those
caught my attention, I recall that I saw I could use my other graduated courses as “electives” (
I was attending my classes of the Bilingual Education program). So I contacted Dr. Joshep R.
Corbeil to inquire about the program and its scope in education, I remember that I was a little
afraid of enrolling the program due to my lack I technological expertise, but Dr. Corbeil
encouraged me to join the program anyway, telling me something like most likely I will be able
to master “Tech-skills” very soon, and he was right!

• Furthermore, I enrolled in the program to give me and the program a try I was willing to take
two courses to see what the program was about, and to see if I could manage it. That was my
best decision ever! I found out, at last I did have talent for technology; I did well in both
courses and I learned a lot. By the way, I one of the courses was taught by an “Emeritous
Professor” from the University of Orlando (They have a good reputation in Ed.Technology,
one of the top programs in the nation) Dr. Richard Cornell, who translated the meaning of
Emeritus, he said that it means “old.” The summer session was intense but satisfactory in
different aspects of my professional development; I learned how to apply any available
resource in order to get to my final goal. Another special “term” he used was: a
“Technological Moment” for a special scenario where the server is down, the computer
crashed, or one lost connection, or any other inconvenient that could drive a student “crazy”
and lose his/hers temper, we did have some of this moments in class, Dr. Cornell taught the
class while he was in China, and he had to schedule meetings at different times, I was chosen
to be his assistant in the U.S. and that was a very nice learning experience, he taught me
many technological resources on the side, and I had his presentations ahead of time in order
to present them if he was unable, due to any “Technological Moments” or difficulties.

• Moreover, after summer I was eager to enroll three courses at the time to see
what happens, I was and always will be a little brave in order to take the lead in my
projects. Moreover, I learned more in my new courses in the fall semester, I
learned more about multimedia, hypermedia, I mastered the Power point
presentations, and I learned how to publish my podcasts and videos on my wiki, or
in my blog. I also opened a lot new projects in pbworks, worldpress, orange /server
(UT), and my Blog; on the other hand, I learned about research methods,
qualitative and quantitative research methods, I finally applied my statistics
background in education. However, my focus was in E-learning I learned more
about the promise of multimedia learning, and my “techie skills” improved a bit.
My skills improved even more when my professors taught me how to produce and
edit videos. We used the Camtasia Studio 7.0, but we were not limited to only
that, some other students performed better by using other software production
programs such as “creative” and some “apple-technology-design” studios. That
was a very positive learning experience, I had to put a lot of work in my
productions, but at the end I mastered the program. I do not consider myself an
expert, but I am able to produce videos in different settings and dimensions. I can
edit audio as well, I can change the format and create podcasts, videos, and
interactive artifacts (.mp3,.mp4,.swf).

• In looking towards the future, I plan on continuing my plan of studies and I learned more
about telecommunications, and how important was to create instruction utilizing E-learning
settings, I also learned how M-Learning was growing fast as well, even Blackboard developed
M-Learning technology (Web 2.0) and applications for Blackberry. Blackboard also developed
a messenger type of application for the students logged on in Blackboard. The impact of E-
learning in education evolved quickly, when more educators designed more lessons to be
delivered via multimedia, the use of the Internet became the ultimate instructional carrier.
Moreover, I learned how to design courses in the Blackboard; I applied almost every single
educational technology that I learned, Power Point presentations, PDF documents, Word
Documents, Multimedia presentations, and JPEG files. Nonetheless, I learned more about the
gamming kind of settings when I and my group signed in Second Life, a parallel “World.” It is a
digital based planet, where you are an “Avatar” and you can visit different “Islands” and
Countries. The UT/Brownsville has its own island, and Dr. Corbeil has his own office in there,
and not only that he has an Intergalactic Battleship the U.S.S. Enterprise, a prototype of “Star
Trek.” Second life has implemented salient technologies, the avatars are able to speak, move,
chat (Text Boxes), send messages, send links, and save documents, Second Life is another
great learning experience, I wasn’t aware of this project before, but the idea is great, I wish
more people can benefit from Second Life in the future.

• In sum, I am glad that I joined the Educational Technology program, the University changes
my life in a way, the slogan says: “Changes comes in degrees” and I believe that is right, and
the UT/Brownsville Educational Technology program projected my tech-skills exponentially.
After receiving my Master’s, I am going to finish my MTT certification program, I am enrolled
in one course already, and I need to get this certification in order to teach technology in
different grade levels EC-12.
I applied to the doctoral program in Curriculum & Instruction at the UT/Brownsville, of
course with the concentration in Educational Technology, but I haven’t been accepted yet.
Anyway, I am planning to use my skills to teach students how to take advantage of technology
in the classroom and in their everyday life as well. I am committed to spread the multimedia
promise in E-Learning, M-Learning or whatever technology capable to transfer knowledge via
digital means. Teddy Roosevelt once said: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you
are” and that’s exactly what I am planning to do. Finally, I want to develop a web-based E-
learning Software program to teach different topics online. My first instructional project is
going to be an ESL (English as a Second Language) course applying new technologies in
several areas such as speech recognition, linguistics, idioms, cognates, and conversational
dialogs spoken by native English Speakers. I am willing to teach courses online as soon as
possible.

• 5. E-Porfolio Documents • Reflection Letter • My Technology expertise before I enrolled the educational technology program was very limited. I could barely operate the office suite 2007, and some other managerial software programs related to my academic degree. Many times I had to ask for help to open and use certain programs. I remember this one time that I was unable to upload a Power Point presentation, and it was frustrating to go over tutorials at midnight, just so I could solve the problem and submit the assignment. At some point I thought new technology just was not for me. Some other day I was about to throw in the towel when I could not save the changes made in another Power Point presentation, so I had to copy the slides and rename it to do so. At that point I thought that I just was done with technology, and I just “had had it” with technology. Then, one day when I was getting some personal information at the “graduate studies” office, I saw the EDTC program advertising, and I saw the core courses, and those caught my attention, I recall that I saw I could use my other graduated courses as “electives” ( I was attending my classes of the Bilingual Education program). So I contacted Dr. Joshep R. Corbeil to inquire about the program and its scope in education, I remember that I was a little afraid of enrolling the program due to my lack I technological expertise, but Dr. Corbeil encouraged me to join the program anyway, telling me something like most likely I will be able to master “Tech-skills” very soon, and he was right!
• 6. E-Porfolio Documents • Furthermore, I enrolled in the program to give me and the program a try I was willing to take two courses to see what the program was about, and to see if I could manage it. That was my best decision ever! I found out, at last I did have talent for technology; I did well in both courses and I learned a lot. By the way, I one of the courses was taught by an “Emeritous Professor” from the University of Orlando (They have a good reputation in Ed.Technology, one of the top programs in the nation) Dr. Richard Cornell, who translated the meaning of Emeritus, he said that it means “old.” The summer session was intense but satisfactory in different aspects of my professional development; I learned how to apply any available resource in order to get to my final goal. Another special “term” he used was: a “Technological Moment” for a special scenario where the server is down, the computer crashed, or one lost connection, or any other inconvenient that could drive a student “crazy” and lose his/hers temper, we did have some of this moments in class, Dr. Cornell taught the class while he was in China, and he had to schedule meetings at different times, I was chosen to be his assistant in the U.S. and that was a very nice learning experience, he taught me many technological resources on the side, and I had his presentations ahead of time in order to present them if he was unable, due to any “Technological Moments” or difficulties.
• 7. E-Porfolio Documents • Moreover, after summer I was eager to enroll three courses at the time to see what happens, I was and always will be a little brave in order to take the lead in my projects. Moreover, I learned more in my new courses in the fall semester, I learned more about multimedia, hypermedia, I mastered the Power point presentations, and I learned how to publish my podcasts and videos on my wiki, or in my blog. I also opened a lot new projects in pbworks, worldpress, orange /server (UT), and my Blog; on the other hand, I learned about research methods, qualitative and quantitative research methods, I finally applied my statistics background in education. However, my focus was in E-learning I learned more about the promise of multimedia learning, and my “techie skills” improved a bit. My skills improved even more when my professors taught me how to produce and edit videos. We used the Camtasia Studio 7.0, but we were not limited to only that, some other students performed better by using other software production programs such as “creative” and some “apple-technology-design” studios. That was a very positive learning experience, I had to put a lot of work in my productions, but at the end I mastered the program. I do not consider myself an expert, but I am able to produce videos in different settings and dimensions. I can edit audio as well, I can change the format and create podcasts, videos, and interactive artifacts (.mp3,.mp4,.swf).
• 8. E-Porfolio Documents • In looking towards the future, I plan on continuing my plan of studies and I learned more about telecommunications, and how important was to create instruction utilizing E-learning settings, I also learned how M-Learning was growing fast as well, even Blackboard developed M-Learning technology (Web 2.0) and applications for Blackberry. Blackboard also developed a messenger type of application for the students logged on in Blackboard. The impact of E- learning in education evolved quickly, when more educators designed more lessons to be delivered via multimedia, the use of the Internet became the ultimate instructional carrier. Moreover, I learned how to design courses in the Blackboard; I applied almost every single educational technology that I learned, Power Point presentations, PDF documents, Word Documents, Multimedia presentations, and JPEG files. Nonetheless, I learned more about the gamming kind of settings when I and my group signed in Second Life, a parallel “World.” It is a digital based planet, where you are an “Avatar” and you can visit different “Islands” and Countries. The UT/Brownsville has its own island, and Dr. Corbeil has his own office in there, and not only that he has an Intergalactic Battleship the U.S.S. Enterprise, a prototype of “Star Trek.” Second life has implemented salient technologies, the avatars are able to speak, move, chat (Text Boxes), send messages, send links, and save documents, Second Life is another great learning experience, I wasn’t aware of this project before, but the idea is great, I wish more people can benefit from Second Life in the future.
• 9. E-Porfolio Documents • In sum, I am glad that I joined the Educational Technology program, the University changes my life in a way, the slogan says: “Changes comes in degrees” and I believe that is right, and the UT/Brownsville Educational Technology program projected my tech-skills exponentially. After receiving my Master’s, I am going to finish my MTT certification program, I am enrolled in one course already, and I need to get this certification in order to teach technology in different grade levels EC-12. I applied to the doctoral program in Curriculum & Instruction at the UT/Brownsville, of course with the concentration in Educational Technology, but I haven’t been accepted yet. Anyway, I am planning to use my skills to teach students how to take advantage of technology in the classroom and in their everyday life as well. I am committed to spread the multimedia promise in E-Learning, M-Learning or whatever technology capable to transfer knowledge via digital means. Teddy Roosevelt once said: “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are” and that’s exactly what I am planning to do. Finally, I want to develop a web-based E- learning Software program to teach different topics online. My first instructional project is going to be an ESL (English as a Second Language) course applying new technologies in several areas such as speech recognition, linguistics, idioms, cognates, and conversational dialogs spoken by native English Speakers. I am willing to teach courses online as soon as possible.
