Holopticism vs. Panopticism,

1. What is holopticism?

2. First, let’s look at it’s
opposite:
panopticism.

3. Imagine a prison
shaped like this...

4. Here are the prisoners,

5. and here is the warden.

6. Notice that the prisoners
can’t see each other,
line of site

7. but the guard can see
the door to every cell.

8. This makes sense
in a prison,

9. because you don’t want
prisoners to coordinate
their actions

10. independently of the
warden.

11. This is the essence of
panopticism.

12. Now imagine a sports team,

13. or a jazz band.

14. Each member of the team
perceives everyone else,

15. and can coordinate
with them.

16. But most importantly
of all...

17. everyone has a sense
of the emerging whole,

18. and can adjust their
actions for the greatest
fit.

19. This is holopticism.
