How does an understanding of diversity issues boost your career? Examples are given of how insight into demographic trends and behavior variations helps to make wise decisions and be in sync with the time. A statistician, Nate Silver was able to predict the outcome of the 2008 and 2012 US presidential elections based on knowledge of, among others, demographic figures and trends. For someone to succeed with their career and for a business or organization to be competitive, knowledge about diversity and demographic changes is important. A study referred to in the presentation found young people to be more concerned with diversity and inclusion topics than their seniors. Employers wishing to attract the best talent are wise to embrace diversity & inclusion and place value on the contributions from women and other underrepresented groups that include e.g. LGBT people, persons living with disabilities, indigenous peoples, various ethnic and racial groups, older people, and those living with HIV/AIDS. The website with vacancy announcements is often the most visited page, and searches for “diversity” and “gender equality” are very frequent. An employer that wishes to leverage the interest in available jobs on the website and at the same time present itself as an attractive organization, can benefit from announcing its diversity & inclusion activities on the web.

With the introduction of new modes to control user interfaces like speech, gesture and multi-touch Post-WIMP interfaces increasingly substitute classical WIMP (windows, icons, menus, pointer) user interfaces. In this paper, we describe a toolchain of three connected tools to design and monitor custom Post-WIMP interactors using model-based user interface design (MBUID) methods. We use state charts and mappings as the basic modeling technique. Different to other MBUID approaches our models are get created to specify the behavior of existing widgets. These models are then used to attach further control modes and connect interactors using mappings. We explain the toolchain by an interactive music sheet web application that can be controlled by head movements to turn the sheets.

In the summer of 2011, Tilburg University’s Library & IT Services decided to replace their current integrated library system with OCLC’s cloud-based WorldShare Management Services (WMS) system. Their current end-user environment (in-house developed) was to be replaced by OCLC’s WorldCat Local (WCL). WMS and WCL were planned to go live on June 1, 2012. Tilburg University would be the first Dutch and European university to go live with WMS. After describing the reasons for Tilburg University to select these systems, Jola Prinsen will present the university’s business case for this project (what the project aims to achieve) and the steps which were taken so far. The first stage of the project aimed at analyzing the current workflows at Tilburg University’s library and determining whether these workflows were supported by the new WMS/WCL systems. On the basis of the resulting gap and impact analyses, in March 2012 the project board decided to go live with WCL in the summer of 2012. The analysis phase for WMS was extended. This latter system is now expected to go live in January 2013. Jola’s focus will not be on WMS’ and WCL’s functionality, but rather on the practice and challenges of implementing a (cloud-based) library management and search system. She will pay attention to what went well so far and what didn’t. Issues she will address, include the project organization, loading of metadata, linking to full-text, phasing out local systems, staff training, and communication to end-users.

The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream.
