Background
(11.30) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK7wud4n3H0&feature=player_detailpage Mancunian accent, frequently swears. Wears a baseball cap and a tracksuit. Stereotypical working class ASBO uniform. Hunches when walking with head down. Doesn’t have the stereotypical posture of an upper or middle class person. Working Class at a Glance
Lives in a small terraced house with his large family. Doesn’t have a highly paid job. At times the audience are unaware of his job as the plotlines focus on other characters, so he may be unemployed. He doesn’t have a broken family, however he lives with his adopted father. How are they Portrayed as Working Class?
In this clip we are watching from a voyeuristic view, watching him being hit by the car and waking up in hospital. We are almost like another member of the large Gallagher family, seeing if Ian will recover. Point of View
Ian has always had a struggled relationship with his adoptive father Frank. Although Frank has accepted him into the family, he constantly relapses into alcoholism. Lip has a strong relationship with Ian. They have grown up together, and Lip has looked out for Ian and kept him out of trouble. Other Characters’ Views
We are supposed to view Ian in a positive light. “He’s smart and he’s tough and he's brave and he’s really caring and responsible” - Cameron Monaghan Not a stereotypical gay character, as his sexuality is only a part of who he is. Other qualities shine through. Ian goes against the stereotypical working class youth as he is honest and loyal to his friends and family instead of bully or a vandal. Our View
