2. SALVATION
• The supreme mission of The Master was the
salvation of every lost soul. John 3:16
• Christ did not come into the world to become a
teacher, or a model for our obedience, or as a
martyr willing to die for truths and principles,
He believed. He came to save the lost. 1Tim.
1:15, Lk.19:10, Matt. 1:21.
• The only remedy for sin is salvation, without
this the sinner is both hopeless and helpless.

• All we could ever know about this subject is

3. THE GREATNESS OF SALVATION
• Throughout the Bible the term salvation is
associated with deliverance from physical
diseases, as well as freedom from material wants.
Luke 7:50
• Salvation gathers into itself all the redemptive
acts: justification, redemption, grace,
propitiation, imputation, forgiveness,
sanctification, and glorification. Ephesians 3:11,
2Timothy 1:9, Titus 1:2, Romans 5:8.
• Creation was great but it only cost God His
breath. Salvation cost Him His life. Acts 20:28

5. THE GRADES OF SALVATION
• To often salvation is defined as what happens when a
person receives Christ as Saviour. But the teaching of
the New Testament is this: I am saved, I am being
saved, I have yet to be saved. Hebrews 7:25.
• Past Salvation: gift we receive once we accept Christ.
Romans 1:16
• Present Salvation: it happens “now” 2Corinthians 6:2
• Personal Salvation: we appropriate the blood of Jesus.
Romans 10:9.
• Powerful Salvation: there is no case He cannot cope
with. Luke 1:68-69

8. THE GREAT ARCHITECTS OF SALVATION
• Calvin (1509-1564) faith has its source from the
intercessory prayer of Christ. We receive it
because Christ prayed to the Father for us. Faith
is thus located in the mind and is not an act of
the will or an initiative which we take in order to
become Christians; it is passively received. Calvin
believed that faith is knowledge not obedience.
So works are not required, nothing of ourselves
can bring about the favor of God. Faith is the
instrument for receiving righteousness, a kind of
pipe that knowledge and justification flows.

9. THEODORE BEZA(1519-1605)
• Beza started his doctrine of salvation based on limited
atonement. He replaced Calvin at Geneva. Beza’s argument
was if Christ died for all then all would be saved. He
developed a system which became known as
supralapsarianism. Which has an order of decrees: Roman
9:18 election preceded human creation and the fall.
• 1. decree to elect some to be saved and to reprobate all
other.
• 2. decree to create men, both elect and non-. elect.
• 3. decree to permit the fall.
• 4. decree to provide salvation for the elect
• 5. decree to apply salvation to the elect
• Major Idea: we look within to see if Christ is at work self
examination. We do not look at Christ who is our mirror

10. WILLIAM PERKINS (1558-1602)
• Stem of salvation around developed his
system of salvation around the idea which
says we must prove our election to ourselves
by means of good works. According to William
before one can become a Christian, the heart
must be made malleable by four hammers:
the law, knowledge of sin, sense of God’s
wrath, and a holy desperation. His doctrinal

11. JACOBUS ARMINIUS (1559-1609)
• Jacobus general belief was that the man in
Romans 7:14-21 was regenerate. God predestines
believers. If one believes, he is elected; if he does
not believe, he is not elected. This was a view of
faith which was active. Man chooses to believe
thus, faith is an act of the will. Once God has seen
that he chooses, then God moves on his heart.
Faith follows repentance. He did not believe that
faith was a gift. He also believed that a believer
could lose their salvation, the only way a believer
would not decline, was as long as they
maintained their belief. Arminius connects faith
to obedience.

12. THE WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY
THEOLOGY
• Westminster assembly were completely unified
from the beginning on the doctrine of salvation.
No representative of the viewpoint of Calvin was
in attendance. The assembly was convened to
answer the threat of antinomianism of John
Eaton (1575-1641). Antinomianism-a person is
free from the law by virtue of grace. Salvation is
not only believing that God’s word is true, but it is
yielding obedience to the commands, trembling
at the threatening, and embracing the promises
of God for this life, and that which is to come. The
principal acts of accepting, receiving, and resting
upon Christ alone. Faith is mans act not God’s

13. THE PROBLEMS
• The old covenant promised salvation on the basis
of a perfect and personal obedience. And the
new is promised on the condition of faith. Yet
when we define faith based upon yielding
obedience to the commands we are left without
clear understanding of the difference. So
salvation in all of these theories is placed on the
shoulders of men and women. So these ideas
throw the church into constant introspection,
self-analysis, and legalism. Did God give us Christ
based on the condition of faith?

14. THE NEW IDEA OF SALVATION
• Salvation is a free gift that Christ wants everyone to have.
All that is needed is for us to believe in what Christ did on
the cross, and choose to be obedient to His commands.
Matthew 20:28, Romans 10:9, 3:26; 4:5-6. these five things
happen once we are saved: 1. we are set free from the
bonds of sin and reconciled to Him. 2. we are delivered
from the penalty of death. 3. we are guaranteed an
entrance into the millennial kingdom. 4. we are given the
gift of a brand new spirit. 5. we are given His eternal life. So
no one can lose their salvation they lose their reward in the
millennial kingdom for not persevering in the things of God.
Once you confess you are saved forever. Because our
salvation does not depend on us but on Christ. Ephesians
1:4-11. But in order to receive your millennial reward you
must maintain your faithfulness to the commands of Christ.
