Are we really serious?
 Like how we slogged for Academic achievement and success?
 Like how we struggle in seeking worldly material progress?
 Like the way we are ready and committed to sacrifice in
seeking personal fame, status, career, influence, power?
 … the way we promote our groups, our company, our party?
Our ‘Amal firstly depends upon our having the right ‘ilm, in the right way

Information gathered are like
pieces of jig-saw puzzle.
7
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Information gathered are like pieces of
jig-saw puzzle.
It may seem quite easy to get them,
especially when they seemed to be
scattered about almost everywhere.
8
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Some people are keen to only gather
them, to pick them up, to steal these
pieces, and are obsessed with merely
having as much of them as possible –
not realizing its true meaning, its true
significance, its true place and
purpose.
9
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Thus, some people may feel that they
have ‘knowledge’, whereas what
they possess may just be merely
‘information’.
Islam’s epistemology is different from
the conventional-secular educational
philosophy.
It emphasizes importance of
understanding terminologies and its
profound meanings adequately.
10
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Especially the term ‘ilm -for
knowledge.
Actually by “knowledge”, we
are referring to the relevant
“meaning of that subject that
we seek to acquire, arriving in
our soul ...”
11
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
‫لم‬ْ‫م‬‫ع‬
The “Soul” (or sometimes
referred to as the ‘heart’,
‘mind’ or ‘intellect’) is the
spiritual Self (Nafs) of who we
are - our cognitive essence,
capable of knowing and of
learning.
12
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
When we speak of
“knowledge” as referring to
“meaning” , it is:
13
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
When we speak of
“knowledge” as referring to
“meaning” , it is:
“ ... the arrival of meaning of
not just the subject per se, but
how it relates to whatever
knowledge which we already
possess within our soul.”
14
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Thus education is said to be
“organic” liken to a living
organism – which pertains to
the “growth” of our soul.
15
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
.
Education is not a mechanical
construct, but it entails nurturing of
something with Life – educators to
be likened as the gardeners not
engineers.
16
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Actually, (in Islamic education),
when acquiring any pieces of it
(information), you (as students)
should also be learning what its
meaning and significance is, and
how it is to be applied (fixed)
unto what you already possess
thus far – increasing your
growth.
17
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
This can only be possible when
such pieces are given to you by
one who has true ownership of
these, and who consents to
give them to you and helps you
with how you should
understand them, and to form
(or attach) them unto your own
overall worldview.
18
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Thus, you must also seek to
learn from the right person, i.e.
especially those who has ‘seen’
the full - the completed picture.
Only they are the ones who can
rightfully teach you how you are
to make each pieces to become
meaningful to what you already
possess.
19
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
Therefore the manner or
approach must also to be
appropriately inculcated with
ADAB:
“.. as to which category of
knowledge to learn, it’s order of
priority, how much quantum of
it to be acquired, its sequence
and relevance, how it relates to
the Reality, etc.”
20
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
And the manner or approach
towards making it meaningful
(enlightening), may be seen
from various perspectives
(angles) amongst fellow
students in the same class,
because each student may have
a limited vision of what the
teacher was teaching.
21

Thus traditional teachers
often encourage revision – (if
individually, the Malay term
used, that I remember was
“menderas”), or if in group
discussion, as “halaqah”

 Do not equate this task (DA’WAH) as being similar with other kinds
of professions. It is AMANAH as a mission and – not a vocation.
 Remember, it has been carried out by an unbroken chain of DU’AT,
faithfully linked to the Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w.
 This legacy is the foremost concern because DEEN-AL-ISLAM has
been perfected and there will be no more new prophet sent to all
mankind after our Muhammad s.a.a.w.
 Every Muslim are to be developed towards assisting DA’WAH
ISLAMIYYAH, in whatever capacity they attained, the most basic is
to become Witnesses of Islam with their life for others.

 Each region may underwent its own unique history, experiences
especially of “civilizational osmosis”. Therefore to have knowledge
and true appreciation of their respective history, to benefit from the
work of previous scholars and propagators, managing proper
transmission of their work with ADAB, especially in learning
adequately of Wisdom and experience gained by them, is
imperative.
 This is crucial – failure in fulfilling this is being ungrateful and can
lead to (KHIYAANAH) treachery to the Prophetic legacy.
 Remember, Allah SWT has stipulated the criteria for carrying it out.

LAA-HAW-LA-WA-LAA-QUW-WA-TA-IL-LA-BIL-LAAH
BEGINNING OF TARBIYYAH
Family belongs to practitioner of the “Ba-’Alawi ” ways, emphasizing
much upon inculcation of Adab emulating the religious practices of the
Saadat Ba’Alawi, in loving the Prophet ,his Ahil-Bayt and descendants,
seeking beneficial knowledge, being in the company of ‘Ulama, prioritizing
upon ‘Amal (deeds) and Akhlaq-al-Karimah (noble disposition).
- Recitation of Surah Yaseen and Ratib Al-Haddad (weekly) has been
inculcated in our family since very young, without fail (even when we went
on holiday).
From young had been inculcated ‘Adab’ - through observance of many
community traditional practices of the elders viz. Mawlid, ‘kenduri’ ,
‘tahlilan’, ‘Ratib’ , Diba’ie, ceramah, ziyarah, ‘Wiridan’ , etc.

BEGINNING OF TARBIYYAH
I owed immensely my Islamic upbringing to my to late
mother and both my grandmothers to whom I was very
closed to.
All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2013))
Most of early life was spent living as extended family
within a large estate-home headed by one of them as the
family grand Matriarch (Hajjah Aishah binte Haji Omar).
BEGINNING OF TARBIYYAH
Many well-known Islamic religious scholars frequently were invited for the
whole family to gain audience from, as well Asaatizah were employed to
conduct regular Islamic classes for us the children after our schooling hours.

In this household, we strictly follow many traditions regarding
Islamic learning, ways and customs, instituted by a legacy of
my late grandfather ( Haji Yousoff bin Haji Mohammad Noor ).
BEGINNING OF TARBIYYAH
Also, living in the earliest Muslim Quarter of Kampong Glam very close to
Masjid Sultan, and having strong family ties with other families with
similar Islamic tradition, had undoubtedly affected my religious
consciousness.

A turning point in taking very seriously my learning of Islam was when I
chose to study in a Catholic-Mission secondary School. I continued taking
extra-lessons on Islam in Madrasah, mosques and joined Halaqah etc.
With the advantage of Islamic home-schooling and nurturing, all of us
the siblings were sent to English schools. Combination of both systems
were gained – proficient in English and yet we could read and write also
in ‘Jawi ‘ script. This early foundation was indeed important.
* While learning about Islam and after my HSC result, because I
was not called for full-time National service, I had to apply for jobs.

  • 7. Information gathered are like pieces of jig-saw puzzle. 7 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 8. Information gathered are like pieces of jig-saw puzzle. It may seem quite easy to get them, especially when they seemed to be scattered about almost everywhere. 8 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 9. Some people are keen to only gather them, to pick them up, to steal these pieces, and are obsessed with merely having as much of them as possible – not realizing its true meaning, its true significance, its true place and purpose. 9 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 10. Thus, some people may feel that they have ‘knowledge’, whereas what they possess may just be merely ‘information’. Islam’s epistemology is different from the conventional-secular educational philosophy. It emphasizes importance of understanding terminologies and its profound meanings adequately. 10 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 11. Especially the term ‘ilm -for knowledge. Actually by “knowledge”, we are referring to the relevant “meaning of that subject that we seek to acquire, arriving in our soul ...” 11 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014)) ‫لم‬ْ‫م‬‫ع‬
  • 12. The “Soul” (or sometimes referred to as the ‘heart’, ‘mind’ or ‘intellect’) is the spiritual Self (Nafs) of who we are - our cognitive essence, capable of knowing and of learning. 12 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 13. When we speak of “knowledge” as referring to “meaning” , it is: 13 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 14. When we speak of “knowledge” as referring to “meaning” , it is: “ ... the arrival of meaning of not just the subject per se, but how it relates to whatever knowledge which we already possess within our soul.” 14 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 15. Thus education is said to be “organic” liken to a living organism – which pertains to the “growth” of our soul. 15 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 16. . Education is not a mechanical construct, but it entails nurturing of something with Life – educators to be likened as the gardeners not engineers. 16 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 17. Actually, (in Islamic education), when acquiring any pieces of it (information), you (as students) should also be learning what its meaning and significance is, and how it is to be applied (fixed) unto what you already possess thus far – increasing your growth. 17 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 18. This can only be possible when such pieces are given to you by one who has true ownership of these, and who consents to give them to you and helps you with how you should understand them, and to form (or attach) them unto your own overall worldview. 18 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 19. Thus, you must also seek to learn from the right person, i.e. especially those who has ‘seen’ the full - the completed picture. Only they are the ones who can rightfully teach you how you are to make each pieces to become meaningful to what you already possess. 19 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 20. Therefore the manner or approach must also to be appropriately inculcated with ADAB: “.. as to which category of knowledge to learn, it’s order of priority, how much quantum of it to be acquired, its sequence and relevance, how it relates to the Reality, etc.” 20 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 21. And the manner or approach towards making it meaningful (enlightening), may be seen from various perspectives (angles) amongst fellow students in the same class, because each student may have a limited vision of what the teacher was teaching. 21 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))
  • 22. Thus traditional teachers often encourage revision – (if individually, the Malay term used, that I remember was “menderas”), or if in group discussion, as “halaqah” (study circle). 22 All Rights Reserved © Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2014))

It is AMANAH as a mission and – not a vocation.  Remember, it has been carried out by an unbroken chain of DU’AT, faithfully linked to the Prophet Muhammad s.a.a.w.  This legacy is the foremost concern because DEEN-AL-ISLAM has been perfected and there will be no more new prophet sent to all mankind after our Muhammad s.a.a.w.  Every Muslim are to be developed towards assisting DA’WAH ISLAMIYYAH, in whatever capacity they attained, the most basic is to become Witnesses of Islam with their life for others.
