Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN

Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission
to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).

THE SECOND ASPECT REQUIRED IN THE ATTESTATION TO
THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED)

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• Muslims have to be careful, as some of them may have already been
influenced by Orientalist’s teachings garbed as Islamic, especially
taught or disseminated amongst certain academicians. In early times,
these academicians were non-Muslim Westerners. Today, it includes
Muslims but with the similar mindset as taught as these earlier
Orientalist, disseminating their teachings in seminars, lecture courses,
books, journals, study or reading groups etc.

       • Thus there is today a lot of confusion where such people speaks about
‘many types of Islam’ whereas the truth is there is only one “AD-DEEN-
             AL-ISLAM ”.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• They are confused because they could not differentiate “the religion
(DEEN)” itself from people’s “understanding (FIQH)” of the religion –
             between “DEENUL-ISLAM” with “FIQHUL-ISLAM”.

       • Past Muslim scholars are ever careful not to be presumptuous
(arrogant even) to claim their FIQH to be the DEEN.

       • This DEEN belongs to Allah s.w.t. whereas man can only claim to his
             FIQH of the Deen.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• Therefore this DEEN is the “Absolute” as Allah s.w.t. is Absolute, and
those who doubt or deny this has not understood the clear assertion of
Allah, or purposely twist its meaning and significance :

“This day have I perfected your religion (DEEN) for you, completed
my favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your
                       religion.”
                                                                  (Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 3)

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
Their twisted logic is :

“since Man is imperfect, therefore their religion is imperfect and cannot
be absolute.” But, AL-ISLAM is not man-created but a revealed religion
             from a Divine Perfect Being.

       • Another fallacy is to equate “KAAFFAH” with “SHUMUL”, as though
             these are interchangeable.

       • Surely there is need to differentiate between AL-ISLAM the (perfected)
DEEN and the Muslims, who are far from being perfect.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• “KAAFFAH” (sufficiently, whole-heartedly, fully etc.) pertains to man’s
potential and capability. And Allah only expects them to give their
fullest, for Allah does not put a burden greater than they can bear.

       • “SHUMUL” (or all-encompassing nature of AD-DEEN AL-ISLAM) on the
other hand, pertains to the perfect and Absolute aspect of Allah’s
guidance, the fundamental rules and laws established by His final
             Prophet s.a.w.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• It’s guiding principles and teachings are already perfected
(KAAMIL) and which encompasses every aspect of man’s life, with
adequate principles for dynamism in its implementation to face
whatever possible problem that the future may hold for mankind.

       • This is because, if it is not all-encompassing “SHUMUL ”, then
another Prophet would be needed, and this in fact is a denial of
the perfection of AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM – it tantamount to ‘unbelief’
             (KUFR).

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• They purport : “that since Muslim’s understanding of Islam is
“evolving” towards a much better understanding of Islam than
Muslims of previous past generations, therefore even the core-
fundamental teachings of “AD-DEENUL-ISLAM ” must continue to
be changed (evolved) just like as had happened as in in other
religion’s historical “reformation”. This is not only inaccurate,
             erroneous but downright mischievous.

       • As we have stated, there is a difference between “SHARI’AH”
(literally the “Way or Source” of the religion) core-fundamental
teachings, and another term “FIQH” (the Islamic scholars’
             understanding of the religion).
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• The core-fundamental teachings of “AD-DEENUL-ISLAM” have been
perfected and it is comprehensive enough to provide the basis for
every Muslim to seek solutions to whatever problem that arose.

       • As regards its application, which must take into consideration the
changing context, AD-DEENUL-ISLAM already allows for differing
interpretations and application of these principles by the ULAMA’
(Islamic scholars), to the specific problems their community is facing
in every age or conditions – as long as it does not contradict or
             oppose these core teachings.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• Each era requires it’s own unique solution. If Muslims scholars
attained to correct interpretation based upon their FIQH, than that is
regarded as good, irrespective of whether it is done in the past or in
the modern present. Past interpretations if flawed cannot be binding
to others, nay, it can be criticised and corrected. Yet, the principles of
this DEEN must be preserved and upheld, to remain unchanged.

       • Lest people get carried away by trends set by people today who
instigate for change or renewal, - we must remember to be
discerning as to what can, and what cannot, be changed.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• “Evolving into following error and deviancy” can never be good. And
thus the “calling for change ” - cannot and must not be applied to
what is already “perfect and good.“

       • Reformation “TAJDEED” – for us is “renewal “ with regards to
Muslims application of rulings or judgement which are affected by
whatever context or circumstances. Thus, new or changing context
may require new rulings and need not be bound by previous rulings.
The primary source and principles are always preserved – it is NOT a
             “total replacement” of the SHARI’AH.
       • This methodology has been taught by the Prophet s.a.a.w. , codified
and continuously applied and adhered to since then.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• In fact after the best three generation (SALAFUS-SOLIHEEN), accretions
and deviations have occurred within the Muslim “mind” regarding this
DEEN. Thus the emergence of Islamic scholars who “strive to preserve
the purity of this religion“ through the endeavour termed as
“TAJDEED” (renewal) of their thinking (mindset) - FIQH. And this does
nor imply “replacement” of AD-DEEN-UL-ISLAM’s principle teachings –
            SHARI’AH.

     • We are not against changing for the better and embracing ‘progress’ in
facing the reality of contemporary needs and circumstances. But we
have to beware, “Evolution” that they advocate may even lead to
replacement, when innovations (BID’AH) are introduced directed
towards total change in the principles (overhauling) of this DEEN.
All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• These academicians would not admit that their methodology – which is
from a humanist sociological study and perspective - is in fact imposing
a false parallel, advocating that contemporary Muslims should imitate
             the ‘Judeo-Christian’ historical experience.

       • Their error may perhaps be due to their assuming that “AL-ISLAM” is
exactly similar to (if not implying that Islam is copying from earlier
religions ), and therefore must inevitably undergo the same historical
process as that of the “Judeo-Christian” – indeed a mischievous
suggestion and rather simplistic and misplaced analogy.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM, as established by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in
fact, was Divinely revealed to complete that process in which the
“People of the Book” went through historically, precisely because they
have erred and have ‘evolved ’ their religion into something contrary to
the original universal message of every Prophet of Allah.

       • Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. came to stem that ‘evolution’ and correct
whatever was wrong, by referring and inviting them back to the
pristine ABRAHAMIC creed of TAUHEED. It was a ‘devolution’ back to
             the principles rather than ‘evolution’.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• Lest it be misconstrued, man’s development entailing change for the
betterment (or what is regarded as progress) is not in any way to be
              curtailed.

        • Only that the changes must not be made to the universal principles
and the established foundation of this DEEN. Tampering with these is
deviancy clearly condemned by Allah and His Messenger (in Al-QUR’AN
              and AS-SUNNAH).

        • Beware, clamouring blindly for “Evolution” may even lead to
“replacement” i.e. total change even in the principles of this DEEN.

•      The word “Islam”                   - literally means “surrender;
submission”. When added with the prefix “al” ( definite
article“the” - to denote a name) yet the word refers to the
essential traits of this religion signifying an external manifestation
of one’s inner conviction, belief (iiman) towards “obedience to
                 the will of Allah”.

          • The true meaning of “believe” or “iiman” is :
                                    “to be convinced in one’s heart/mind (Qolb);
                                      and declare with one’s tongue,
and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars”

• So “how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will”?

          • This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w.
in what is referred to as :

                                                the Pillars of Islam

Islam is built upon Five (pillars):

[1] To bear witness that there is no god except

               Messenger of Allah;

[2] And to establish the (Daily obligatory)
               Swolah;

         [3] And pay out the Zakah (tax on wealth);

[4] And to make pilgrimage (Hajj) to the
House) for those who has the means to
               (do) it;

[5] And to Fast (daily) in Ramadhan.

• As ‘belief or conviction’ resides in a person’s heart, there is a need
to first express ones’ commitment verbally – declaring it to others
such that it becomes a solemn pledge or a promise, as well as a
sign of one’s entrance into a social & spiritual contract with the
                 universal community as Muslim.

So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal
declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as
to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his
whole-self to the Will of the Creator.

• For to submit to Allah is to begin to be living in the presence with
every witnesses of the Truth of the Lordship and Sovereignty of
the One and only God – Allah, Who Alone is Deity worthy of
worship; upholding and standing firm with justice, in accordance
with the Way of life (DEEN) as established by His Final Messenger
                 Muhammad s.a.w.
          • The beginning, the “SHAHADATAIN” is to begin to “ self-
actualise”. It does not stand alone, but are connected to the other
                 four pillars.

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• As these five pillars are inter-related, beginning with a solemn
commitment, a covenant, thus a Muslim is to strive to fulfil all
these – as these are to be regarded as a FARDH ‘AIN (a personal
obligation) unto those who enter into Islam:

“O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); and
follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an
                   avowed enemy.”
                                                 (Qur’an: Surah al-Baqorah: 2: 208)

All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
• Thus, the five pillars must be regarded as that educational and
developmental program to nurture a total personality of “one who
                submits to Allah’s Will” (MUSLIM).

          • Each of these five pillars, contains the medium through which the
deeper meanings must impact a Muslim – leading to yet higher
consciousness of how to transform his/her entire life into one of
complete submission to the Will of Allah. For to be a Muslim is about
“being” and “becoming”. It’s about ‘HAAL ’ (spiritual condition) and
                ‘MAQOM ’ (spiritual station).

• No one should be forced to embrace Islam.

          • A person is expected to enter into it willingly, with full certainty
of the basic truth that there is no god except Allah and that
Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.

          • Those who are born into a Muslim family needs to be nurtured
with the correct understanding of Islam to attain certainty .

Thus, the declaration marks a person’s commitment towards
adhering to all that Islam teaches.

It is in fact a covenant between him and Allah – to be witnessed
at least by other Muslims because he will be accorded every
rights and respect as fellow Muslims; as much as other Muslims
                have rights over him.

• Amongst these are for Muslims to exhort one another towards
               truth and patient constancy; making DU’A for one another;
protecting each others rights and dignity; assisting in all matters
leading to AL-BIRR (Goodness) and AL-TAQWA (consciousness of
Allah) with love for one another for the sake of Allah.

         • When a person enters or embraces Islam, his/her past sins are
forgiven and erased whereas merit of al their good deeds remains
(including now also, merit of repentance of those past sins). This is
similar to Muslims whose repentance have been accepted by Allah.

“O you who have attained to faith! If you ever
(MURTAD) abandon your faith," Allah will in time bring
forth [in your stead] people whom He loves and who

(stern) towards all who deny the truth: [people] who
(YUJAAHIDU) strive hard in Allah's cause, and do not
fear to be censured by anyone who might censure them:
such is Allah's favour, which He grants unto whom He
wills. And Allah is infinite, all-knowing.”

  • 2. FROM PREVIOUS LESSONS IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, FARDHU’AIN: CONDUCTED BY MOST COMPASSIONATE, USTAZ ZHULKEFLEE HJ ISMAIL MOST MERCIFUL LESSONS FROM TEXTBOOK “Beginners’ Manual on Islam” (The basic message of Islam) 2 All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 3. FROM PREVIOUS LESSONS • “Allah” : Arabic proper noun; name for God, it refers to the One and Only, the Unique Creator, Lord Sustainer of the Universe, Who Alone is God – there is none besides Allah. • No equivalent translation in non-Semitic language. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 4. FROM PREVIOUS LESSONS • “Muhammad s.a.a.w.” : Arabic name meaning “the Praised One”; he is the Chosen, Unlettered Prophet, the servant and Messenger of Allah, the Awaited Seal of Prophethood after whom there will be no more prophet sent. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 5. IIMAN ‘A M A L • I H SA N [Islam] Belief Submission Best or Faith Obedience Righteous Conviction Practice Conduct Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without Faith is mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy. Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with IHSAN which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve Allah s.w.t. Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his submission to the Will of Allah (as Muslim). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 6. IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, MOST COMPASSIONATE, MOST MERCIFUL THE SECOND ASPECT REQUIRED IN THE ATTESTATION TO THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF ALLAH (TAUHEED) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 7. Muslims have to be careful, as some of them may have already been influenced by Orientalist’s teachings garbed as Islamic, especially taught or disseminated amongst certain academicians. In early times, these academicians were non-Muslim Westerners. Today, it includes Muslims but with the similar mindset as taught as these earlier Orientalist, disseminating their teachings in seminars, lecture courses, books, journals, study or reading groups etc. • Thus there is today a lot of confusion where such people speaks about ‘many types of Islam’ whereas the truth is there is only one “AD-DEEN- AL-ISLAM ”. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 8. They are confused because they could not differentiate “the religion (DEEN)” itself from people’s “understanding (FIQH)” of the religion – between “DEENUL-ISLAM” with “FIQHUL-ISLAM”. • Past Muslim scholars are ever careful not to be presumptuous (arrogant even) to claim their FIQH to be the DEEN. • This DEEN belongs to Allah s.w.t. whereas man can only claim to his FIQH of the Deen. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 9. Therefore this DEEN is the “Absolute” as Allah s.w.t. is Absolute, and those who doubt or deny this has not understood the clear assertion of Allah, or purposely twist its meaning and significance : “This day have I perfected your religion (DEEN) for you, completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 3) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 10. Their twisted logic is : “since Man is imperfect, therefore their religion is imperfect and cannot be absolute.” But, AL-ISLAM is not man-created but a revealed religion from a Divine Perfect Being. • Another fallacy is to equate “KAAFFAH” with “SHUMUL”, as though these are interchangeable. • Surely there is need to differentiate between AL-ISLAM the (perfected) DEEN and the Muslims, who are far from being perfect. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 11. “KAAFFAH” (sufficiently, whole-heartedly, fully etc.) pertains to man’s potential and capability. And Allah only expects them to give their fullest, for Allah does not put a burden greater than they can bear. • “SHUMUL” (or all-encompassing nature of AD-DEEN AL-ISLAM) on the other hand, pertains to the perfect and Absolute aspect of Allah’s guidance, the fundamental rules and laws established by His final Prophet s.a.w. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 12. It’s guiding principles and teachings are already perfected (KAAMIL) and which encompasses every aspect of man’s life, with adequate principles for dynamism in its implementation to face whatever possible problem that the future may hold for mankind. • This is because, if it is not all-encompassing “SHUMUL ”, then another Prophet would be needed, and this in fact is a denial of the perfection of AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM – it tantamount to ‘unbelief’ (KUFR). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 13. They purport : “that since Muslim’s understanding of Islam is “evolving” towards a much better understanding of Islam than Muslims of previous past generations, therefore even the core- fundamental teachings of “AD-DEENUL-ISLAM ” must continue to be changed (evolved) just like as had happened as in in other religion’s historical “reformation”. This is not only inaccurate, erroneous but downright mischievous. • As we have stated, there is a difference between “SHARI’AH” (literally the “Way or Source” of the religion) core-fundamental teachings, and another term “FIQH” (the Islamic scholars’ understanding of the religion). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 14. The core-fundamental teachings of “AD-DEENUL-ISLAM” have been perfected and it is comprehensive enough to provide the basis for every Muslim to seek solutions to whatever problem that arose. • As regards its application, which must take into consideration the changing context, AD-DEENUL-ISLAM already allows for differing interpretations and application of these principles by the ULAMA’ (Islamic scholars), to the specific problems their community is facing in every age or conditions – as long as it does not contradict or oppose these core teachings. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 15. Each era requires it’s own unique solution. If Muslims scholars attained to correct interpretation based upon their FIQH, than that is regarded as good, irrespective of whether it is done in the past or in the modern present. Past interpretations if flawed cannot be binding to others, nay, it can be criticised and corrected. Yet, the principles of this DEEN must be preserved and upheld, to remain unchanged. • Lest people get carried away by trends set by people today who instigate for change or renewal, - we must remember to be discerning as to what can, and what cannot, be changed. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 16. “Evolving into following error and deviancy” can never be good. And thus the “calling for change ” - cannot and must not be applied to what is already “perfect and good.“ • Reformation “TAJDEED” – for us is “renewal “ with regards to Muslims application of rulings or judgement which are affected by whatever context or circumstances. Thus, new or changing context may require new rulings and need not be bound by previous rulings. The primary source and principles are always preserved – it is NOT a “total replacement” of the SHARI’AH. • This methodology has been taught by the Prophet s.a.a.w. , codified and continuously applied and adhered to since then. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 17. In fact after the best three generation (SALAFUS-SOLIHEEN), accretions and deviations have occurred within the Muslim “mind” regarding this DEEN. Thus the emergence of Islamic scholars who “strive to preserve the purity of this religion“ through the endeavour termed as “TAJDEED” (renewal) of their thinking (mindset) - FIQH. And this does nor imply “replacement” of AD-DEEN-UL-ISLAM’s principle teachings – SHARI’AH. • We are not against changing for the better and embracing ‘progress’ in facing the reality of contemporary needs and circumstances. But we have to beware, “Evolution” that they advocate may even lead to replacement, when innovations (BID’AH) are introduced directed towards total change in the principles (overhauling) of this DEEN. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 18. These academicians would not admit that their methodology – which is from a humanist sociological study and perspective - is in fact imposing a false parallel, advocating that contemporary Muslims should imitate the ‘Judeo-Christian’ historical experience. • Their error may perhaps be due to their assuming that “AL-ISLAM” is exactly similar to (if not implying that Islam is copying from earlier religions ), and therefore must inevitably undergo the same historical process as that of the “Judeo-Christian” – indeed a mischievous suggestion and rather simplistic and misplaced analogy. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 19. AD-DEEN-AL-ISLAM, as established by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in fact, was Divinely revealed to complete that process in which the “People of the Book” went through historically, precisely because they have erred and have ‘evolved ’ their religion into something contrary to the original universal message of every Prophet of Allah. • Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. came to stem that ‘evolution’ and correct whatever was wrong, by referring and inviting them back to the pristine ABRAHAMIC creed of TAUHEED. It was a ‘devolution’ back to the principles rather than ‘evolution’. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 20. Lest it be misconstrued, man’s development entailing change for the betterment (or what is regarded as progress) is not in any way to be curtailed. • Only that the changes must not be made to the universal principles and the established foundation of this DEEN. Tampering with these is deviancy clearly condemned by Allah and His Messenger (in Al-QUR’AN and AS-SUNNAH). • Beware, clamouring blindly for “Evolution” may even lead to “replacement” i.e. total change even in the principles of this DEEN. WaAllaahu a’lam All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 21. “Do they seek for other than the Religion of Allah?―While all creatures in the heavens and on earth have willing, or unwilling, bowed (submitted) to His Will (“Islam” ), and to Him shall they all be brought back.” (Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 83) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 22. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 23. “Now then, for that (reason), call (them to the Faith), and stand steadfast as thou art commanded nor follow thou their vain desires; but say: "I believe in the Book which Allah has sent down; and I am commanded to judge justly between you. Allah is Our Lord and your Lord. For us (is the responsibility for) Our deeds, and for you for your deeds. There is no contention between us and you. • 24. The word “Islam” - literally means “surrender; submission”. When added with the prefix “al” ( definite article“the” - to denote a name) yet the word refers to the essential traits of this religion signifying an external manifestation of one’s inner conviction, belief (iiman) towards “obedience to the will of Allah”. • The true meaning of “believe” or “iiman” is : “to be convinced in one’s heart/mind (Qolb); and declare with one’s tongue, and practice deeds in accordance with its pillars” All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 25. So “how does one begin to submit to Allah’s will”? • This was succinctly enumerated by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in what is referred to as : the Pillars of Islam (Arkaan-ul-Islaam). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 26. Islam is built upon Five (pillars): [1] To bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; [2] And to establish the (Daily obligatory) Swolah; [3] And pay out the Zakah (tax on wealth); [4] And to make pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House) for those who has the means to (do) it; [5] And to Fast (daily) in Ramadhan. • 27. As ‘belief or conviction’ resides in a person’s heart, there is a need to first express ones’ commitment verbally – declaring it to others such that it becomes a solemn pledge or a promise, as well as a sign of one’s entrance into a social & spiritual contract with the universal community as Muslim. So, the gateway into Islam is simple. Yet, this entrance – verbal declaration - leads to a whole program to be implemented so as to ‘build’ a truly Muslim personality of one who submits his whole-self to the Will of the Creator. • 28. For to submit to Allah is to begin to be living in the presence with every witnesses of the Truth of the Lordship and Sovereignty of the One and only God – Allah, Who Alone is Deity worthy of worship; upholding and standing firm with justice, in accordance with the Way of life (DEEN) as established by His Final Messenger Muhammad s.a.w. • The beginning, the “SHAHADATAIN” is to begin to “ self- actualise”. It does not stand alone, but are connected to the other four pillars. All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 29. As these five pillars are inter-related, beginning with a solemn commitment, a covenant, thus a Muslim is to strive to fulfil all these – as these are to be regarded as a FARDH ‘AIN (a personal obligation) unto those who enter into Islam: “O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully); and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you an avowed enemy.” (Qur’an: Surah al-Baqorah: 2: 208) All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
  • 30. Thus, the five pillars must be regarded as that educational and developmental program to nurture a total personality of “one who submits to Allah’s Will” (MUSLIM). • Each of these five pillars, contains the medium through which the deeper meanings must impact a Muslim – leading to yet higher consciousness of how to transform his/her entire life into one of complete submission to the Will of Allah. For to be a Muslim is about “being” and “becoming”. It’s about ‘HAAL ’ (spiritual condition) and ‘MAQOM ’ (spiritual station). All Rights Reserved© Zhulkeflee Hj Ismail (2012)
