“To be as witnesses in attesting Tauhiid, we are commanded to
uphold Justice. By justice, we have the terms “qistw ” and
“‘adalah” with their profound significations quite different from
the English word “justice” generally understood.
Thus our understanding of Adab connotes this imperative
towards Justice, tampered with Ihsan and generosity.

“OUR
RELATIONSHIPS”

In our existence, we have to be mindful of our life and
all our responsibilities and commitment which we are
commanded to bind ourselves to, or have taken upon
ourselves towards those whom we have covenanted
(made contract / agreement) with.
Placing them in their rightful place, fulfilling or giving
them their just due.

“And interact with people in the best mannerAnd interact with people in the best manner
of disposition (i.e. adopt a noble character).”of disposition (i.e. adopt a noble character).”
(Hadith reported by at-Tabrani)
In interacting with people, our Prophet s.a.w. commands us to
adopt the best manner in our disposition, which when applied
would require knowledge with “Adab.”

1.1. Acknowledge and extol praises of theAcknowledge and extol praises of the
true giver, Allah Who alone is God,true giver, Allah Who alone is God,
the Bestower of all favours. Avoidthe Bestower of all favours. Avoid
committing “committing “SHIRKSHIRK”.”.
2.2. Learn the value of what is given,Learn the value of what is given,
appreciating them constantly, do notappreciating them constantly, do not
take any of these favours for granted.take any of these favours for granted.
3.3. Utilize what is given in accordance toUtilize what is given in accordance to
what may please the Giver (i.e. dowhat may please the Giver (i.e. do
not abuse the gift), so as not to causenot abuse the gift), so as not to cause
His wrath to befall us.His wrath to befall us.
CRITERIACRITERIA

“O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allah
and His Messenger but (be conscious of and ) fear Allah.
Indeed, Allah is Hearing and Knowing.”

And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents:
in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years
twain was his weaning: (hear the command) "Show gratitude
to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.”

A man came to the Prophet s.a.w. seeking his permission to
participate in Jihad (battle in defence of Islam). He was asked: “Are
your parents alive?” He replied: “Yes!” The Prophet s.a.w. said to him :
“Then go and be with them and Jihad (exert service towards them) .”
(Hadith reported by Bukhary and Muslim)

To honour them by granting them their requests.
Always involve them in your consultations of matters.

Always make Du’a (supplicate) for their well-being and
seek Allah’s forgiveness for them.
When they receive guests, be ready nearby to serve,
just in case your parents need your assistance
regarding them.

To always do things which will please them, even
though they did not request.
Do not irritate them with being loud in speech, or
using of electronic devises etc. in their presence.
Do not become too involve in whatever you are doing
as to be seen or be regarded as ignoring them.

Do not leave the house or leave their presence without
taking leave from them (i.e. seek their permission)
Do not disturb them in their rest or sleep.
Do not put or exceed others (wife or children; work or
hobby etc.) in preference over them.

Do not criticise them when their opinion may not beDo not criticise them when their opinion may not be
agreeable to you.agreeable to you.
Do not laugh in their presence, lest they mayDo not laugh in their presence, lest they may
misinterpret that, as your mocking or making fun ofmisinterpret that, as your mocking or making fun of

Do not stretch out your feet at them or in front of
them.
Do not enter before them, or walk ahead of them. If
need to pass in front of them, to respectfully seek their
permission.

Be quick to respond to their call – and response with
“lab-bayk ! ” (meaning – “Yes! at your service”).
To honour and respect all their friends, even after they
(your parents) have passed away - i.e. to continue
showing friendship with their friends.

Do not befriend any person who is disrespectful to
their own parents.
Express your love to them, and for them (i.e. if
speaking with others).

After they have passed away, always supplicate
(Du’a) for them, as this will still benefit them.
Recite frequently, especially this Du’a :
RAB-BIR – HAM-HUMAA KA-MAA
ROB-BA-YAA-NEE – SWO-GHEE-RAA
“O my Lord (Allah)! Forgive (be Merciful to) the both
of them, as they have shown mercy towards me since young.”

O Allah,O Allah,
bless Muhammad, Thy slave and Thybless Muhammad, Thy slave and Thy
messenger,messenger,
and his Household, the pure,and his Household, the pure,
and single them out for the best of Thyand single them out for the best of Thy
blessings,blessings,
Thy mercy,Thy mercy,

O Allah,O Allah,
bless Muhammad and his Household,bless Muhammad and his Household,
teach me through inspirationteach me through inspiration
knowledge of everything incumbentknowledge of everything incumbent
upon me toward them,upon me toward them,
and gather within meand gather within me
knowledge of all that completely!knowledge of all that completely!
Then make me act in accordanceThen make me act in accordance
with what Thou hast inspired mewith what Thou hast inspired me
and give me the success to put intoand give me the success to put into
practice the knowledge Thou hast shownpractice the knowledge Thou hast shown
to me,to me,
lest I fail to act according to somethinglest I fail to act according to something
Thou hast taught me or my limbs feel tooThou hast taught me or my limbs feel too
heavy to perform that with which Thouheavy to perform that with which Thou
hast inspired me!hast inspired me!
His exemplary Supplication for his Parents (upon them all be peace) Imam ‘Ali ibn Hussayn

O Allah,O Allah,
as Thou hast ennobled us through him,as Thou hast ennobled us through him,
and bless Muhammad and hisand bless Muhammad and his
Household,Household,
as Thou hast made incumbent upon usas Thou hast made incumbent upon us
rights toward the creatures because ofrights toward the creatures because of
him!him!

O Allah,O Allah,
fill me with awe of my parents,fill me with awe of my parents,
the awe one has toward a tyrannicalthe awe one has toward a tyrannical
sovereign,sovereign,
and let me be devoted to them,and let me be devoted to them,
with the devotion of a compassionatewith the devotion of a compassionate
mother!mother!
Make my obedience and devotion toMake my obedience and devotion to
them more gladdening to my eyesthem more gladdening to my eyes
than sleep to the drowsy and morethan sleep to the drowsy and more
refreshing to my breast than drink to therefreshing to my breast than drink to the
thirsty,thirsty,

so that I may prefer their inclinationso that I may prefer their inclination
to my inclination,to my inclination,
set their satisfaction before myset their satisfaction before my
satisfaction,satisfaction,
make much of their devotion to memake much of their devotion to me
though it be little,though it be little,
and make little of my devotion to themand make little of my devotion to them
though it be great.though it be great.

O Allah,
lower before them my voice,
make agreeable to them my words,
make mild before them my temper,
make tender toward them my heart,
and turn me into their kind companion,
their loving friend!

O Allah,O Allah,
thank them for my upbringing,thank them for my upbringing,
reward them for honouring me,reward them for honouring me,
and guard them as they guarded me inand guard them as they guarded me in
my infancy!my infancy!

O Allah,O Allah,
and whatever harm has touched themand whatever harm has touched them
from me,from me,
detested thing has reached them fromdetested thing has reached them from
me,me,
or right of theirs which has beenor right of theirs which has been
neglected by me,neglected by me,
allow it to alleviate their sins,allow it to alleviate their sins,
raise them in their degrees,raise them in their degrees,
and add to their good deeds!and add to their good deeds!
O He who changes evil deeds intoO He who changes evil deeds into
manifold good deeds!manifold good deeds!

O Allah,O Allah,
whatever word through which they havewhatever word through which they have
transgressed against me,transgressed against me,
act through which they have beenact through which they have been
immoderate with me,immoderate with me,
right of mine which they have leftright of mine which they have left
neglected,neglected,
or obligation toward me in which theyor obligation toward me in which they
have fallen short,have fallen short,
I grant it to themI grant it to them
and bestow it upon them,and bestow it upon them,

and I beseech Theeand I beseech Thee
to remove from them its ill consequence,to remove from them its ill consequence,
for I do not accuse them concerningfor I do not accuse them concerning
myself,myself,
(or) find them slow in their devotion(or) find them slow in their devotion
toward me,toward me,
or dislike the way they have attended toor dislike the way they have attended to
my affairs, my Lord!my affairs, my Lord!

They have rights against me which are moreThey have rights against me which are more
incumbent,incumbent,
precedence in beneficence toward me that isprecedence in beneficence toward me that is
greater,greater,
and kindness toward me that is mightierand kindness toward me that is mightier
than that I should settle accounts with justicethan that I should settle accounts with justice
or repay them with equivalents.or repay them with equivalents.
Where then, my God, would be their longWhere then, my God, would be their long
occupation with bringing me up?occupation with bringing me up?
Where the hardship of their toil in taking careWhere the hardship of their toil in taking care
of me?of me?
Where the stinting of themselves to provideWhere the stinting of themselves to provide
me with plenty?me with plenty?

What an idea!What an idea!
I can never discharge their right against me,I can never discharge their right against me,
fulfil my obligations toward them,fulfil my obligations toward them,
or accomplish the duty of serving them.or accomplish the duty of serving them.
So bless Muhammad and his HouseholdSo bless Muhammad and his Household
and help me, O Best of those whose help weand help me, O Best of those whose help we
seek!seek!
Give me success, O Most Guiding of thoseGive me success, O Most Guiding of those
whom we beseech!whom we beseech!
Place me not among the people of disrespectPlace me not among the people of disrespect
to fathers and mothersto fathers and mothers
on the day when every soul will be repaidon the day when every soul will be repaid
for what it has earned,for what it has earned,
they shall not be wronged.they shall not be wronged.

O Allah,O Allah,
bless Muhammad, his Household, and hisbless Muhammad, his Household, and his
progenyprogeny
and single out my parents for the bestand single out my parents for the best
which Thou hast singled out for the fathers andwhich Thou hast singled out for the fathers and
mothers of Thy faithful servants,mothers of Thy faithful servants,
O Most Merciful of the merciful!O Most Merciful of the merciful!
O Allah,O Allah,
let me not forget to remember them after mylet me not forget to remember them after my
ritual prayers,ritual prayers,
at every time throughout my night,at every time throughout my night,
and in each of the hours of my day!and in each of the hours of my day!

O Allah,O Allah,
forgive me through my supplication for myforgive me through my supplication for my
parents,parents,
forgive them through their devotionforgive them through their devotion
toward metoward me
with unfailing forgiveness,with unfailing forgiveness,
be well pleased with them through mybe well pleased with them through my
intercession for themintercession for them
with resolute good pleasure,with resolute good pleasure,
and make them reach through Thyand make them reach through Thy
generositygenerosity
the abodes of safety!the abodes of safety!

O Allah,O Allah,
if Thy forgiveness reaches them first,if Thy forgiveness reaches them first,
make them my intercessors,make them my intercessors,
and if Thy forgiveness reaches me first,and if Thy forgiveness reaches me first,
make me their intercessors,make me their intercessors,
so that we may gather together throughso that we may gather together through
Thy gentlenessThy gentleness
in the house of Thy generosityin the house of Thy generosity
and the place of Thy forgiveness andand the place of Thy forgiveness and
mercy!mercy!
Verily Thou art Possessor of aboundingVerily Thou art Possessor of abounding
bountybounty
and ancient kindness,and ancient kindness,
and Thou art the Most Merciful of theand Thou art the Most Merciful of the
