Definition
• The simple past is used to talk
about a completed action in a
time before now. Duration is
not important. The time of
the action can be in the
recent past or the distant past
The form of simple past
• Affirmative
• Subject + verb (in the past)

• Subject + did not + infinitive without to
• They didn't go.
• Interrogative
• Did + subject+ infinitive without to

what is the use of simple past tense
• Finished events in the past with no connection to the
present:
• Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa.
• The Vikings invaded Britain.
• 2 With a finished time word (yesterday, last week, at 2
o'clock, in 2003):
• I went to the cinema yesterday.
• We visited Japan in 2007.
• 3 For stories / lists of events:
• He went to a café, sat down and lit a cigarette.
• Yesterday I went to the library, met a friend for lunch, and
played tennis.

Spelling rules
To form the affirmative past tense of most regular
verbs:
• Add –ed to the base form of the verb (wash-
washed).
• If the verb ends in –e, add –d (live-lived)
• If the verb ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel,
double the final consonant (stop-stopped)
• If the verb ends in –y preceded by a consonant,
omit the “y” and add –ied ( copy-copied)

  • 4. Definition • The simple past is used to talk about a completed action in a time before now. Duration is not important. The time of the action can be in the recent past or the distant past
  • 5. The form of simple past • Affirmative • Subject + verb (in the past) • Negative • Subject + did not + infinitive without to • They didn't go. • Interrogative • Did + subject+ infinitive without to • Did she arrive? • Interrogative negative • Did not + subject+ infinitive without to • Didn't you play? •
  • 6. what is the use of simple past tense • Finished events in the past with no connection to the present: • Leonardo painted the Mona Lisa. • The Vikings invaded Britain. • 2 With a finished time word (yesterday, last week, at 2 o'clock, in 2003): • I went to the cinema yesterday. • We visited Japan in 2007. • 3 For stories / lists of events: • He went to a café, sat down and lit a cigarette. • Yesterday I went to the library, met a friend for lunch, and played tennis.

REGULAR VERBS Spelling rules To form the affirmative past tense of most regular verbs: • Add –ed to the base form of the verb (wash- washed). • If the verb ends in –e, add –d (live-lived) • If the verb ends in a consonant preceded by a vowel, double the final consonant (stop-stopped) • If the verb ends in –y preceded by a consonant, omit the “y” and add –ied ( copy-copied)
