Editor's Notes
1-4mins JISC digital media grew out of the communities need for helping to shape education using technologies… one of which of course is digital mediaDuring this workshop we will cover some of the major benefits, find out what your uses/concerns or interest is and then show some examplesCABBIE STORY – On the way over to this workshop I was talking to the cabbie about what I was doing today and he saying that his son was at secondary school and they actually encouraged the use of mobile devices. He was impressed that the school acknowledged the majority of learners had access to mobiles and to embrace it. They regular take photos instead of scanning etc, where do this learners then go? Onto college and University, who also need to use this stuff. Photo credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/3966743644/
If you visit the url bit.ly/becta0903 you will be taken to a Google document that can be used to ask questions and later get all of the website links and presentation. Photo credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/4323311962/
We see the use of technology as an experience where one size doesn’t always work – So we plan for this by trying to understand the context of use. In the slide you’ll see that the popular photo site Flickr by yahoo! Have made a specific mobile version. Wordpress have also made a mobile theme
Some of my recent experiences that lead to this talk
Potential to improve teaching and learningRe-use of material improves valueItunes U – Raised the profile of the University of Oxford
Some typical types of use
What can you do next and/or innovate
The next step is to prepare how we can use the teaching and learning experience with all of the devices available, most of which have internet access
We should listen for things that we want to change or are not sure about… but as we are designing the experience we may choose to do things our way.
Story - Technology goes wrong, yesterday I remembered that we had several PSPs but could not encode the video, as I was unsure what format (turns out there are a number of presets in the encoding software to deal with PSP) and then no video would play – turns out the devices are new and the memory cards “simply” needed formatting. I made backup plans. Photo credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/4323319972/
Pre, during postA common problem is that teachers wish to improve PowerPoint resources but do not know how. What can I do to improve this resource? Adding notes for example if I am to give this away, remembering in what context(s) it may be used – slideShare, conference websites
College of West Anglia, Kings Lynn

When I later put this resource on SlideShare it may get a few additional views, adding value.
Example, Google Alerts is a way of finding out whats being said about your public facing stuffGoogle analytics helps understand your trafficbit.ly used today to improve the experience of typing URLS and then I can measure the number of visits, helping to justify my time and show if the use of such Google services is worth the effort – it is.
