2. DEFINITION:
 Mechanical transport means any
contrivance for moving a person over
land that has moving parts and
provides a mechanical advantage to
the user
 The mechanical transport includes all
the equipment and devices needed to
transport the product mechanically to
different points of a plant

3. MOVEMENT
SYSTEMS:
 Forms of mechanical
transportationcan be found
within or around the building
Some of the types are:
 Lifts
 Escalators
 Travolators or moving
pavements

4. Lifts:
What are lifts?
 Elevator,also calledlift, is a transport
device used to move people and goods
vertically
 Most modern elevators are propelled
by electric motors, with the aid of a
counterweight, through a system of
cables and sheaves (pulleys)

requirement for
buildings over 3
storeys
• Positioning of lifts
should be at locations
which provide easy
means of access for all
building users-central
entrance lobby of
offices, hotels,
apartments etc

5. TYPES AND WORKING OF A LIFT
WORKING:
Hydraulic lifts work on the
principle: to rise up, a pump
pushes oil into the cylinder,
pushing the piston up
(which pushes up the lift
car). To go down, the valve
opens and oil is allowed
back into the reservoir,
pushing it back using the
gravitational force of the
lift car.
TYPES:
There are three main types of elevators
commonly used:
•Modular
•Machine-Room-Less (MRL) traction,
•Hydraulic

6. Escalators:
 An escalator is a moving staircase which carries
people between floors of a building or structure.
 It consists of a motor-driven chainof individually
linked steps on a track which cycle on a pair of
tracks which keep them horizontal.
 Escalators are often used around the world in
places where lifts would be impractical, or they
can be used in conjunction with them.
 Principal areas of usage include department
stores, shopping malls, airports, transit
systems (railway/railroad stations), convention
centers, hotels, arenas, stadiums and public
buildings

7. WORKING OF ESCALATORS:
 An escalator is made up of a set of
interlocking steps, powered by an electric
motor.
 A pair of chains looped around two pairs of
gears rotate to move the steps along while
a larger metal structure called a truss
encases the entire mechanism to connect
the floors.
 The steps then move about like a conveyer
belt, entering into a special guide system at
the top and bottom of the truss to create a
level platform for passengers to board or
exit.
