How your media product uses and develops real magazines
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
By Zahra Uddin
2. Using conventions of real media
products:
I used conventions of real media products by using the same layout /structures of real
media products. For example my cover has a masthead at the top of a page it uses
stickers, the price, the date and a bar code.
Masthead
Text surrounding the
image
Artist name
Date
Barcode
Contrasting colours eg
white text against a dark
background
Date
3. It uses typical language such as quotes, ‘My year to Shine’ and hyperbolic language such as ‘exclusive’
and ‘hottest’. From my analysis, Billboard magazine covers often use close up photos which I have also
done. In addition tried to create a sleeker image by editing out the background. I overlapped the photo
over the masthead and surrounded the text around the image like most magazine covers did eg.
Billboards, Vibe, Kerrang. It includes artists names that are going to appear in the magazine.

Used symbols such

Eg. Kanye grey and blue clothing, Fatima’s red clothing & pink makeup
4. These features on vibe magazine were common throughout the other magazines including
those which weren’t of a pop genre which you could identify in my magazine analysis.
Features: close ups, overlapping image, name dropping, persuasive language eg plus, free,
special etc.
Examples from analysis:
5. My double page spread uses forms and conventions real media products because the
Images takes over both pages. However also develops media products as I has also
created a clear division between the two pages through the format of the text and text
boxes.
Whereas this double page from Billboard doesn’t have
any separation between the two pages.
6. How does the product develop or
challenge real media products?
My contents page challenges real media products as it incorporates more pattern into the
background which is not commonly used throughout real media products, they tend to stick
to flat or blended colours
It uses forms of real media
products such as the column
