Principle 2 if you do not see it then you can not have it - decide what you want
1. Principle 2
If you do not see it then you can not have it!
Decide what you want.
[v51] "What do you want me to do for you?" Jesus asked him. The blind man said, "Rabbi, I want to
see."
My Thought
It is not the lack of money—banks are full of money. It is not the lack of opportunity—Kenya,
and much of the Free World, continues to offer the most unprecedented and abundant
opportunities in the last couple of years of recorded history. It is not the lack of books—
libraries are full of books—and they are free! It is not the schools—the classrooms are full of
good teachers. We have plenty of ministers, leaders, counselors and advisors.
Everything we would ever need to achieve our goals is within our reach. The major reason
that so few take advantage of all that we have is simply neglect- inability to demand what we
want from life.
There is only one person with the power to demand what you want from life for you –
YOU. If you do not know what you want out of life then you ask a miss!
My son the Blind man – son of Timaeus - knew exactly what he wanted.
He did not beat about the bush on what he wanted from the Master, his answer was direct –
“Rabbi, I want to see”.
He could have asked for a few coins or food or sympathy .He believed after the encounter with
the master he wouldn't walk away the same. He believed that though he was blind against all
odds he'd be DIFFERENT as soon as he had the encounter.
I would bet my life that he had not seen any other blind man whose sight had been restored
either medically or miraculously, but it did not matter to him! Because he knew beyond any
shadow of doubt what he wanted from the Master!
He did not ask for temporal gratification; he asked for what he wanted for his success in life –
he was tired of being blind and begging at the roadside.
2. You must get tired of what the world offers you and demand of life what you want. Not asking
what you really want is not humility as taught by the world and will serve no purpose
The average human being prays...
"God, if you'll just change my employer,
if you'll just change my husband or my wife
if you'll just change my children or my Friend,
if you'll just change my boss, or co-worker, or relative”
Playing small in this world does not serve you in anyway my son, except preventing you
achieve your goal in life.
The process of Achieving your dreams and goals depends among others, the following factors:
a) How specific your goals are.
b) How passionate you really are to achieve your goal.
c) Mental clarity of the image of your goal.
d) Your ability to disregard and reject doubts and thoughts about failure.
e) The confidence and faith and perseverance until you gain succeed.
I would like to let you know that just a few people fulfill these factors in the world! Hence
statistics show that the 90 % of the world’s wealth is in the hands of about 5% of the population.
My life
A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between
he does what he wants to do.” —Bob Dylan
My Brother and I grew up in Nkama Village of the Loitokitok Division, Kajiado District. I give
those details because this was a god forsaken place on the map of Kenya at the time- though it
was famous for the production of Beans and Maize and the “Magendo” business along the
Tanzanian Border.
Just to give you the idea of how remote the place was – It was 240 km south of Nairobi, The
capital City of the Kenyan Nation But used to take a minimum of 12 hours on the road to get
there because of the roads conditions.
During the rainy season, which was at least 6 months of the year during those days, you were
lucky to arrive in 24 hours – the Cattle tracks that were Roads then became impassable.
As we went through Primary school, our role models were the Teachers and the few policemen
we saw; especially the Tanzanian ones who begged you to allow them arrest you when you
committed a crime. Every Child desired to become a teacher or a policeman.
3. My Elder brother decided that he was going to become an Engineer – a Mechanical engineer to
be precise so that he could build the Safari Rally cars; during those days we waited for the
Easter Holiday to watch what was then known as East African Safari Rally with abated breath.
And an engineer he became after coming top of the class at Class 7, Form 4 and Joining
Dagoretti High School in Nairobi. Since he knew he wanted to become an engineer, he
graduated from the Nairobi University with Bsc Mechanical Engineering.
That was no mean feat for a boy who grew up in Loitokitok! It required a great resolve and
closing of the ears to the various voices that spoke to him on the impossibility of such a feat. To
many it was just a pipe dream –as a matter of fact my father always jokes about how he
received my brothers CPE results from a neighbor that we all considered rich “I cannot
understand how this world has changed,” the neighbor told our father,” it seems that it is only
the children of the poor who pass the examination this days, can you imagine that your son
Nganga has come top of his class, and my son at the bottom of the class!”
But my brother faithfully asked life to grant him the desire and life did!
With a similar resolve and determination I graduated with a first Class Honours Bachelors
Degree in Textile Technology.
Way forward
It is so easy and simple to daydream and then say, "Well it is just a daydream. It will never
come true".
It is so easy to give up due to lack of faith.
Achieving your desires shouldn't be a tough ordeal, son. In fact, it can be fun and pleasure, if
you go in the right way. It is not hard physical work that brings success.
Great success does not require hard physical labor. In fact, you need to do more mental work.
By thinking in a positive manner on your desire, and not letting any doubts enter your mind,
your intuition starts working, you see opportunities, and you have energy at your disposal to
follow your goals and dreams.
Success appears in various ways, sometimes in a miraculous way, sometimes in an ordinary
way, and sometimes through an opportunity that appears. A door opens, but you have to get in
and take advantage of the opportunity.
God never promises that he will change your situation. God does promise that he will change
YOU. He'll change your attitude... your perspective... Your outlook... Then you can change
your attitude toward your situation.
To illustrate this allow me to share the following story that is often quoted:
4. The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we
didn't already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.
I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me
with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, "Hi handsome. My
name is Rose. I'm eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?"
I laughed and enthusiastically responded, "Of course you may!" and she
gave me a giant squeeze." Why are you in college at such a young,
innocent age?" I asked.
She jokingly replied, "I'm here to meet a rich husband, get married,
have a couple of children, and then retire and travel."
"No seriously," I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to
be taking on this challenge at her age. "I always dreamed of having a
college education and now I'm getting one!" she told me. After class
we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate
milkshake. We became instant friends.
Every day for the next three months we would leave class together and
talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this "time machine"
as she shared her wisdom and experience with me. Over the course of
the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends
wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the
attention bestowed upon her from
the other students. She was living it up.
At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football
banquet. I'll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and
stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech,
she dropped her three by five cards on the floor. Frustrated and a
little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said "I'm
sorry I'm so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is
killing me! I'll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell
you what I know."
As we laughed she cleared her throat and began: "We do not stop
playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There
are only four secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving
success.
5. "You have to laugh and find humor every day."
"You've got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We
have so many people walking around who are dead and don't even know
it!"
"There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If
you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don't
do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am
eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do
anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That
doesn't take any talent or ability.
The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change."
"Have no regrets. The elderly usually don't have regrets for what we
did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear
death are those with regrets."
She concluded her speech by courageously singing "The Rose." She
challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our
daily lives.
At the years end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all
those years ago. One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her
sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in
tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it's never
too late to be all you can possibly be.
Nuggets to live by:
1. The truth is …………………….when you specific about what you want to
achieve it is granted to you.
Most people don't know what they want to do with their life, and even after
thinking hard, they often don't come with something they really want to do. As a
matter of fact researchers have continuously established that only 2% of the
Human race really has written goals of where they would want to go! No
wonder 80% of the wealth of the world is held by this 2% population!
6. This is one of the main reasons that in spite of so many books on success, most
people live an average life, not achieving some major success.
2. The truth is………….. You will achieve what you draw up in a plan of action.
There is power in the written word – since it is a real commitment then it
challenges us to take action. Devote as much time as you need to find a goal or
goals, even minor goals are okay. Not everyone really desires great success and
is willing to completely change his life. Not everyone desires to be a millionaire,
or possesses the talent to make money.
After finding a goal that you really desire to achieve, draw up a plan or even
several plans, and be as practical as possible.
3. The truth is………….the more specific the steps the clearer the goal, the easier
it is to achieve it, therefore make a list of steps you will need to take
This could include signing up for a course, studying, reading, developing the
required skills, looking for a job, etc, and other steps you need to implement that
will take you closer to achieving your goal.
If you do not have a list my son, forget about achieving anything in life. There is
great power in the written word that pushes us to the edge.
4. The truth is…………. You will need to Act now! do not be passive
Take action and follow the steps on your list. Don't just wait for things to
happen. Nothing comes to us when we are sleeping! Procrastination is the
greatest killer of our dreams.
Action is the fuel that moves us forward. Any item that stays stationery dies –
and dead things are buried. You can dream as much as you want but until you
get up and do something nothing will change in your life. Hence the African
saying which is often misinterpreted: “God helps those who help themselves”!
5. The truth is………….. Knowledge comes when we read and listen to advice
You must read books and articles about what you want to achieve. Meet people
who can help you and listen to their advice, but use your common sense and
reason before accepting anything.
I have made a personal commitment to read one book a month, and it has been
magical how this has changed my perspective of life in every way.
7. 6. The truth is …………… you will need alternative plans if things do not work
as estimated.
If a certain plan doesn't work, look for an alternative one. Do not listen to the
multitude for the sign to change your plan. Always remember that no great thing
succeeds the first time.
Colonel Sanders Chicken recipe was rejected over 1900 times before he got the
first break and created the multi Billion dollar business under the name of
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)
7. The truth is…………. You will need to examine your goals periodically
Some goals aren't worth achieving. Circumstances and people change. Some
goals lose their importance. It is a good idea to re-examine your goals regularly
and weed out the worthless ones.
As we set out on the journey to our goals , our Visions are guided by what we
know and our imagination of what we could achieve. But as we achieve each
step our minds opens up to new frontiers that are yet to be conquered. If we do
not then change the goal posts we will become self conceited and proud. Our
goals must grow with us!
8. The truth is…………Continuous Visualization of your goal will ensure you
stay the course required to achieve it.
Visualization will also affect your subconscious mind, which will keep you
motivated, focused on your goal, and more aware of ideas and opportunities. I
cannot over emphasize the importance of seeing yourself achieving what you
desire. Athletes who perform well and break world records see themselves
winning before getting out of the starting blocks.
If you can not see it you cannot get it is a maxim that must rule your life.
