What is the main purpose of the United Nations?
To maintainpeace and security throughout the world! Is there something peculiar about this phrase?
Hmmmmmmm… MAINTAIN! Why is this word misleading?
Unit 4 Peace & Security
Our Objective: SWBAT define the terms peace & security. SWBAT discuss the various strategies employed by the UN in maintaining peace and security.

What is security? Think-pair-share
Well aren't they the same thing?
Peace : a state of tranquility or quiet: as a : freedom from civil disturbance   : a state of security or order within a community provided for by law or custom <a breach of the peace>  : freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions  : harmony in personal relations  a: a state or period of mutual concord between governments b: a pact or agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war or in a state of enmity  —used interjectionally to ask for silence or calm or as a greeting or farewell  — at peace: in a state of concord or tranquility
Security Definition of SECURITY : the quality or state of being secure: as a: freedom from danger : safety : freedom from fear or anxiety c: freedom from the prospect of being laid off <job security>  a: something given, deposited, or pledged to make certain the fulfillment of an obligation b:surety a: something that secures : protectionb (1) : measures taken to guard against espionage or sabotage, crime, attack, or escape (2) : an organization or department whose task is security
How does the UN promote peace & security? Goal: prevent and resolve conflicts to avert the suffering and destruction of war Take action at an early stage Prevent escalation
Of course they do! A commission in charge of this Peace Building Commission PBC
The PBC Intergovernmental Supports peace efforts  Countries emerging from conflict
How does the PBC do this? Countries emerging from conflict Bring together all of the important players Distribute resources Advise and propose strategies to for recovery and peace Highlight any potential problems that threaten that peace
At present UN Evaluating the effectiveness Strengths & weaknesses Reconsidering its future direction
Back, Back, Back-it-up When did we say that the UN began? Since 1948 64 peacekeeping operations globally
Initially Peacekeeping meant Maintaining ceasefires Stabilizing situations so that political resolutions could be achieved Military observers, lightly armed troops, ceasefires and limited peace agreements
But times change UN role is more complex Build institutions of governance Human rights monitoring Security sector reform Disarmament Demobilization Reintegration of former combatants
What kind of conflicts? Inter-state Intra-state
Do You Need A Job? Administrators Economists Police officers Legal experts De-miners Electoral observers Human rights monitors Communication experts Humanitarian workers (doctors, etc)
