Aleta Meyer - "The Impact of Early Adversity & Chronic Stress on Youth Health & Well-Being"
1. The Impact of Early Adversity and Chronic
Stress on Child and Adolescent Health and
Well-Being
Aleta Lynn Meyer, Ph.D.
2. Recent Research on Adverse Childhood
Experiences, Trauma and Toxic Stress
Informs our Understanding of How…
• Early adversity negatively impacts health and
well-being in childhood and throughout the
lifespan.
– Frequent and prolonged activation of the body’s
stress response system can disrupt the
development of brain architecture and other
organ systems, increasing the risk for stressrelated diseases and cognitive impairment well
into the adult years.
3. Early Adversity and the Impact across
the Lifespan
• Both catastrophic and routine stressors are
important to understanding human
development.
• Maltreatment and violence often occur in
contexts of dangerous neighborhoods, underresourced schools, financial insecurity, and
parenting practices that are harsh and nonresponsive.
5. Despite much progress with evidencebased prevention….
• Not having the public health impact expected
– Reach of programs
– Feasibility/Acceptability in new contexts
– Capacity for technical assistance and support
• Are our interventions powerful enough, given
the amount of time they take…?
6. Thinking about the ‘match’ between
developmental theory and
intervention design
• Physically active interventions as a better ‘match’ between
developmental theory, intervention design, and desired
changes?
– Social learning theory
• Learning from valued ‘experts’
• Modeling an imitation
• Practicing until mastery
– Social-emotional information processing
• Affect-event memory links
– Self-regulation
• Practicing starts and stops
• Mindful rough and tumble play….
7. IOM report on preventing mental and
social disorders
• Spectrum from promotion to rehabilitation
• Promotion includes ‘prepare to deal with
adversity’
8. As we reflect on the past two days of the Youth-Nex conference?....
HOW MIGHT RESEARCH ON STRATEGIES
TO PROMOTE PHYSICAL HEALTH IN
ADOLESCENCE AND YOUNG
ADULTHOOD HELP TO ADDRESS THE
CONSEQUENCES OF EARLY ADVERSITY?
AND HELP TO CREATE MORE
POWERFUL INTERVENTIONS?
