Adverbs of Manner
An adverb of manner tells us how something is done.
It answers the question “how?”.
Some common adverbs of manner are “quickly”, “carefully”, and
“loudly”.
When we want to describe how we did something, we use an
adverb of manner.

Adverbs of Manner
Here are some examples:
The dog angrily stared at the mailman.
She sang loudly in the shower.
I accidentally spilled my coffee on the floor.
He was walking happily down the street.
Notice that most adverbs of manner end in “ly” – so it is easy for you
to identify them. Be aware that some adjectives end in “ly” as well.
21
Adverbs of Manner
Notice that the adverb is placed usually before the verb.
The placement of the adverb of manner can change the meaning
the sentence. Look at this example.
I foolishly thought I could fix the sink. (Here the thinking is foolish)
I thought I could fix the sink foolishly. (Here fixing is foolish)

Reading
44
Read the following passage about the
autumn foliage and discuss about it.
In autumn we enjoy the fall colors tremendously. The mix of ref, purple, orange and
yellow result mainly from the chemical processes that usually take place as the
seasons change. The leaves work continuously during the summer and spring as
factories for the nutrients that feed and grow the trees. The leaf badly needs
chlorophyll to produce these foods and that is what gives the leaf its green colour.
This chemical normally absorbs energy from sunlight and gradually transforms the
carbon dioxide and water in carbohydrates. But in the fall, because of the changes
in the length of the sunlight and changes in temperature, the leaves inevitably stop
the food-making process, the chlorophyll slowly breaks down and the green color
suddenly disappears, leaving room for the yellow and orange colors which
ultimately give us the fall splendor.

  • 44. 44 Read the following passage about the autumn foliage and discuss about it. In autumn we enjoy the fall colors tremendously. The mix of ref, purple, orange and yellow result mainly from the chemical processes that usually take place as the seasons change. The leaves work continuously during the summer and spring as factories for the nutrients that feed and grow the trees. The leaf badly needs chlorophyll to produce these foods and that is what gives the leaf its green colour. This chemical normally absorbs energy from sunlight and gradually transforms the carbon dioxide and water in carbohydrates. But in the fall, because of the changes in the length of the sunlight and changes in temperature, the leaves inevitably stop the food-making process, the chlorophyll slowly breaks down and the green color suddenly disappears, leaving room for the yellow and orange colors which ultimately give us the fall splendor. Adapted from a text at esf.edu
