2. Lyrics
Two feet standing on a principle
Two hands longing for each others warmth
Cold smoke seeping out of colder throats
Darkness falling, leaves nowhere to go
It's spiralling down
Biting words like a wolf howling
Hate is spitting out each others mouths
But we're still sleeping like we're lovers
Still with feet touching
Still with eyes meeting
Still our hands match
Still with hearts beating
The lyrics of this song would suggest falling out of love, it
describes how lovers sleep together with ‘eyes meeting’
however the love they once have has died.
The lyrics clearly describe what occurs when a
relationship fades, it expresses how some people just
stay together for the familiarity and the routine, although
they are not truly happy like they once were.
The main idea formed from the lyrics could be relatable
to the audience, making them enjoy the song because
they can relate to what is said in the words.
3. Music
The music in this song is very slow melody, it
relates to the idea that it is a sad (love) song. In
the beginning there is a guitar used and Elena
Tonra’s voice can be heard clearly, this allows
emphasis for the words she is singing as the
music is soft and the volume is low at this
point. When the chorus plays, the beat is
exaggerated by drums, this adds effect to the
song as this is where the song could mimic the
emotions (frustration and upset) of the
individuals (the couple) described in the song.
In the chorus there is more instruments used
and the beat is stronger and continues
throughout the song.
4. Genre/mise en scene
Throughout the video the lighting is very dim
and there is low key lighting, this reflects the
mood of the characters and creates a dismal
atmosphere which would reinforce the idea
that the situation that they are in is not a
positive one.
The costumes used in the music video relates
to the indie/alternative genre of the song. For
example: the female character is wearing a
leather jacket, polka dot tights and a short
patterned dress. Also, the props used in the
video link back to the genre. Props include;
plants, fur rug and a gold framed mirror.
5. Camerawork
The camerawork used in the video really
captures the emotions displayed by the
characters, there are many close ups and
extreme close ups and this allows the
main idea conveyed (the absence of love
which was once present) to be shown
easily by the character's faces which the
camerawork allows to happen.
6. Editing
Editing in the video matches the music
beat throughout. In the video the rules
of continuity are not broken as there
are always smooth transitions or match
on action. There are many different
editing techniques used, a focus pull is
used in the video to signify the words
being said as the camera moves from
the character onto the screen where
the band are performing.
7. Narrative/Performance
The narrative of the video is two
people getting undressed for bed in
the same room, however there is no
contact; psychically or emotionally.
The male character gets to bed as
soon as he hears the female
character come in, this shows that
they are no longer connected and
that they do not even have a simple
conversation and there is no love
shown towards each other.
8. Star Image/Brand/Intertextuality
The band are not the main focus in
the video however they have been
placed in the video as though they
were on the TV, this gives the band
recognition. Also, it is quite a
unique and this makes the video
interesting but still includes the
band members in a new way. This is
also an example of a post modern
approach to intertextuality, this
method is used for familiarity for
the audience as the band
themselves are not used as the
main characters within the video.
9. Voyeurism/looking
The Still video conforms to Mulvey’s theory
(male gaze). In most of the video the
female character has her body exposed as
she is getting dressed, the camera
concentrates on her body parts which
could be considered sexual, for example:
arms, back, hips and legs. This portrays her
a as sexual object.
The video would suggest that the female
character is passive, when she realises the
male character is asleep she doesn’t say
anything although she is clearly upset as
she begins to cry, which also shows her as
being weak.
