1. LOVECATS By The Cure Music Video Analysis http://www. youtube .com/watch?v= mcUza _ wWCfA &feature=related
2. Hybridity I believe that there is a hybridity within the genre of music that The Cure are. Most forums seem to class The Cure as Post Punk or Post New Wave. However, I think that they fall in between the genres of Rock and Pop. Therefore, this is a hybridity as it stretches between two genres. The music – in particular this song - is quite happy, and cheerful (with it being in a major key). However, Robert Smith and other members of the band dress in a gothic manner – this suggests hybridity and also, is an example of juxtaposition.

4. Characters – The music video doesn’t really feature any characters. Robert Smith and the band seem to be surrounded by real and fake cats. Setting – There are two settings: The streets – coming from the view a cat would see. Also, the house. The house looks like it’s been trashed and broken into – possibly by the band. NICS
5. Post Modern The setting could be post modern – as it is reminiscent of old Victorian houses, used in films. Also, a good part of the music video is shot in black and white. This is common of old films – before full colour was used in films. This gives the effect of it being an old film, or set in the past. Intertextuality I couldn’t find much about intertextuality within the video but Robert Smith said in an interview the song was inspired by the Disney film, The Aristocats.
6. Intertextuality (continued) However, many Cure fans believe that the song is making reference to all the dark, twisted songs they wrote previously. Meaning, they should “throw them into the sea” and just write a happy song – like this one – to make more money. However, others believe that the song is about a suicidal pact between two lovers “into the sea, you and me” (etc, etc…). This then could be intertextuality of Romeo and Juliet which features a similar narrative. However, I’m not convinced as the music video doesn’t really back up the second idea. However, it could back up the first one.
7. Parody I don’t think that the music video is parodying anything in particular or any previous texts. However, the video is meant to be humorous with people dressed as cats and cats playing trumpets (etc…). I think this was added just for comedic effect. However, there is a possibility that this could be a parody of other bands music, that isn’t as dark as the bands previous material.
