Personal Statement
I am Yamileth Hawit, a 22-year-old student at
Loyola University of Chicago’s Business School where
I have focused my studies in Finance and Marketing.
As a volunteer at ACCION Chicago I participate
in a pluralist setting where the employees, interns and
clients all are from different cultural, social and
economic backgrounds. I am from Honduras, a
Spanish speaking country in Central America, but I am
currently living in Chicago for educational purposes.
My ability to fluently speak English and Spanish and
the fact that I am studying business makes it easier for
me to evolve in the organization’s culture.
3. + My job at the organization is to research and
help promote the microfinance program to the Latino
community in the Chicago area. My boss, Maria
Almeida, comes from a Hispanic background as well
which has enabled us to have a better communication.
The cultural diversity that coexists inside the
organization makes the job a lot more interesting
because it gives you the opportunity to talk and learn
from different people.
In ACCION everyone has different traditions
and a unique identity yet we all manage to get along
very well. Despite the multiculturalism we are all very
cooperative with one another. Many of our clients
don’t speak perfect English and prefer communicating
in their first language thus bilingual employees are
very helpful.
