2. The simple present or present simple is one of the verb forms associated with the present tense in modern
English. It is commonly referred to as a tense, although it also encodes certain information about aspect in
addition to present time.
The simple present tense is used:
•To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions and wishes.
•To give instructions or directions.
•To express fixed arrangements, present or future.
•To express future time, after some conjunctions.

4. Will future expresses a spontaneous decision, an assumption with regard to the future or an action in the
future that cannot be influenced.
The simple future tense is used:

5. The present continuous tense is formed from the present tense of the verb be and the present participle (-
ing form) of a verb.
The present continuous is used:
• To describe something which is happening at the exact moment of speech
• To describe an action that is taking place now but not at the exact moment of speech
• To describe an event planned in the future
• With always but meaning often (used to emphasize the frequency of an action in a humorous or
hyperbolic way).
• To describe an action that is taking place now and is subject to interruption
Examples:
• Ellen cannot come to the phone since she is sleeping
• The boy is crying.
6. The past progressive or past continuous construction combines progressive aspect with past tense, and is formed using
the past tense of be (was or were) with the present participle of the main verb. It indicates an action that was ongoing at
the past time being considered.
The Past continuous is used:
• Interrupted Action in the Past
• Specific Time as an Interruption
• Parallel Actions
• Atmosphere
• Repetition and Irritation with "Always" s subject to interruption
Examples:
• As I was watching television the telephone rang
• It was eight o’clock. I was writing a letter
