2. Questions: How many of you teach a hybrid class? How many of you teach a totally online class? How many of you are seriously considering a hybrid or online class?
3. Online modes: When giving assignments or communicating in a partial or totally online environment we have three main modes: 1) Text 2) Audio 3) Video
4. Synchronous environments: What is synchronous? Advantages: Get an in-class feel in an online environment due to communication and interaction with the teacher and other classmates, immediate answers to questions or misunderstandings. Disadvantages: Technology, some students like to remain as distant as possible and therefore do not like the one-on-one interaction, restricted to a specific time/day to meet.
5. How can we communicate using text, audio, video in a synchronous environment? Text (chat, forum) Audio (Skype, Elluminate, Wiz iq) Video (Skype, Wiz iq,Elluminate) Elluminate Student link
6. What is asynchronous? Advantages: Work at your own pace, convenience. Disadvantages: Communication can be limited among classmates, time to ask/answer questions can be long, feeling of disconnect due to a lack of interaction.
7. How can we communicate using text, audio and video in an asynchronous environment? text (discussion boards, blackboard, nabble) audio (recordings teachertube, individual files that students must upload to their computer) video (youtube, Blackhawk, jing, camtasia), ppts (slideshare)
8. So what do we choose? If you teach a hybrid class the answer is probably in class with asynchronous material. But what if you are teaching a totally online course? Should all of the course be synchronous or asynchronous?
9. How can we pull all of these things together? What are the advantages of blackboard? What are the disadvantages? How do we pull all of these resources and tools to our Blackboard?
10. Would you like to be able to put a website within your blackboard? Find a box with the words HTML on it or select the button with <> then paste the following below in the box. <iframesrc= "copy and paste the site address here" name= "" width="1000" height="800" id="">content if browser does not support</iframe>
11. How many of you would like to use videos from youtube or hulu on your blackboard? find a video that you would like to use… to the side of it you should find a box that says embed and in that box is a bunch of code. Copy that code and put it in your HTML <> box.
12. Aside from Blackboard: There is officelive. (a free product by Microsoft that allows you to make your own website.) See example: Mr. Reynolds’ classes
13. Q & A Do you have any questions or would you like to see more examples? An online classroom perhaps?
