yStats.com report details global movement to online lodging reservations
Germany-based online business intelligence firm yStats.com has released a new report, “Global Online Accommodation
Booking Market 2018,” which provides data on the growth of online bookings of accommodation around the world.
The yStats.com publication includes the projection that within the next five years, almost half of hotel revenues will be result from online
reservations, with much of the growth coming from the ascendance of online travel agencies. Last year, travelers booked over a trillion overnight stays
through the two largest OTA’s, Booking.com and Expedia. Hotel chains such as Marriott and Hilton attempt to capture more direct bookings to counter
the OTA growth.
Both hotel chains and the OTAs face competition from the insurgency of peer-to-peer accommodation platforms such as Airbnb, which are
particularly popular with young adult travelers. The yStats.com report cites data indicating that in the United Kingdom, nearly a third of travelers have
reserved a stay through a peer-to-peer platform, and in the USA the numbers of traveler using Airbnb will grow by 10 million over the next five years.
Hotel chains, OTAs and P2P offerings all benefit from the global spread of smartphones, as accommodation bookings are increasingly done through
mobile apps.
