Press Release: Global Cross-Border B2C E-Commerce 2018
1. PRESS RELEASE
Hamburg, September 14th, 2018
Cross-border online shoppers turn to marketplace platforms, says
yStats.com report
Hamburg-based online commerce research firm yStats.com has released a new publication, “Global Cross-Border B2C E-
Commerce 2018,” detailing the cross-border shopping trend in 25 nations. One finding shared in the publication is that shopping
abroad is often done through marketplace websites.
The incidence of cross-border shopping differs globally
Growth of cross-border shopping continues globally and is expected to reach about one-fifth of total B2C E-Commerce within the
next five years, as shoppers seek products and cost advantages not available through websites in their own country. However, there is
considerable variation in cross-border online shopper penetration. In Asia, for example, most Japanese online shoppers buy online only from
domestic websites, while in Hong Kong and Singapore, much of the goods and services purchased online is from a foreign source, according to
the yStats.com report.
Cross-border shopping facilitated by leading online merchants
The largest online merchants, Alibaba, Amazon and eBay, have adapted their websites to facilitate purchases from shoppers outside
their home base. The yStats.com publication reveals that over half of cross-border purchases are done through the marketplace section of
those and other E-Commerce merchants. The top product categories benefiting from this growth in cross-border shopping is apparel and
electronics.
