God's Love for All: A Catholic View of Homosexuality
1. On Homosexuality
Et creavit Deus
“And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him, male and female
he created them”
Homosexuality
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2357, Homosexuality
refers to relations between men or between women who experience an exclusive or predominant
sexual attraction toward persons of the same sex. It has taken a great variety of forms through the
centuries and in different cultures. Its psychological genesis remains largely unexplained.
Homosexual Acts
Basing itself on Sacred Scripture, which presents homosexual acts as acts of grave
depravity, tradition has always declared that "homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered." They
are contrary to the natural law. They close the sexual act to the gift of life. They do not proceed
from a genuine affective and sexual complementarity. Under no circumstances can they be
approved. (CCC 2357)
Response
The number of men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies is not
negligible. This inclination, which is objectively disordered, constitutes for most of them a trial.
They must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust
discrimination in their regard should be avoided. These persons are called to fulfill God's will in
their lives and, if they are Christians, to unite to the sacrifice of the Lord's Cross the difficulties
they may encounter from their condition. (CCC 2358)
Calling
Homosexual persons are called to chastity. By the virtues of self-mastery that teach them
inner freedom, at times by the support of disinterested friendship, by prayer and sacramental
grace, they can and should gradually and resolutely approach Christian perfection. (CCC 2359)
2. Lecture Commentary
The question is this: Are homosexual persons already condemned to eternal punishment?
No, homosexual persons are not instantaneously condemned to eternal punishment as
long as they are living a chaste life. There had been a number of occurrences in which the stance
of the Roman Catholic Church with regard to homosexuality was misunderstood and
misinterpreted. Holy Mother Church does not condemn homosexual persons because of their
state in life. However, Holy Mother Church does condemn homosexual persons if they are living
a life contrary to what is natural and godly; that is, having intimate and sexual relations with the
same sex, and to the extent of simulating the opposite sex through altering their bodily processes,
and undergoing surgical operations to mutate their sexual organs.
Homosexual acts are contrary to the natural order; for relations between two men or two
women are not complementary. In view of the Divine Law, as written in the Sacred Scriptures,
the Lord Himself commissioned a man and a woman, personified in Adam and Eve, to be
intimately united and to produce offsprings, which is the very essence of Holy Matrimony and
sexual intercourse.
When homosexual persons enter the ceremony of same-sex marriage and have
themselves bound at wedlock, it is but a derision to their dignity as persons, for it is not inherent
that two men or two women are adjoined in matrimonial rites. Also, the ritual that is celebrated is
neither binding nor genuine. It may seem licit, civilly and in view of the parties involved, but the
very essence of the ceremony is, without a doubt, divergent to what is divinely, ecclesiastically,
and naturally acknowledged. In a similar way, when they engage in sexual activities, they cannot
reproduce and bear forth children, and their execution of the act is aberrant.
Persons who are inclined to have homosexual tendencies must, first and foremost, learn
how to control their desires towards the same sex. It is understood that that is a great deal of a
trial for them. Homosexual persons are called to have a decent and chaste life, that is, they
should not engage in acts that are fundamentally iniquitous. Rather, they should live a life of
faithfulness to the Gospel of the Lord, and offering whatever hardships that they might encounter
to God. It is not simple to do these precepts, but with fervent prayers, and with the aid of those
3. who care for them – their families, friends, and other support groups – with the sustenance of the
Lord through Holy Mother Church, they can find loving abode and refuge, and ultimately
surmount their life’s tribulation.
Furthermore, it is most unseemly that most heterosexuals, those who lack substantial
comprehension, and those who are feeble minded tend to discriminate and to behold them as less
of a person. It is dreadfully unchristian to manifest any kind of hatred for homosexual persons.
The Lord spoke about love – that we should love our neighbours as ourselves, and that we should
love one another just as He loved us. So, we must not be harsh nor indifferent towards our
brothers and sisters who are in this condition.
Homosexual persons are to be accepted for who they are; together with esteem, kindness,
and sympathy for they are, like everyone else, endowed with dignity and are created in the image
and likeness of the Lord. However, the most unmerciful and uncaring deed that we can do is to
condone their acts. It is imperative that we must admonish and lead them to the light of truth, and
above all, to guide them towards the path of Christian perfection for them to be truly free.
