Painting 1/2 de Beaufort

The Interior

Directions:
        1. On illustration board, canvas or panel, draw an abstract design using irregular, organic
shapes lightly in pencil. Split the drawing in two somehow (each side will utilize a different
pair of complements) but make sure that the piece continues from one board to the next. You
may want to use tape to mask the transition.
        2. Using a complementary color scheme, fill in your line drawing with paint by using the pure
            color, tones, tints, and shades.
        3. Adventurous students only: by mixing together the tones tints and shades of
your two selected complementary colors you can create a wide range of
interesting neutral colors. Feel free to use these colors as well to add a range
            and richness in your composition.
        4. Once you have filled in the illustration board completely with paint, use a sharpie to outline
the shapes with contour line in order to make the work more graphic and bold.

Student Learning Objectives:
        1. Color: Students will chose two complementary color schemes and demonstrate an ability to
create tones, tints, shades and neutrals within each of these selected schemes.
        2. Design: Students demonstrate a knowledge of irregular organic shape, continuation, and
contour line. Unity is achieved through careful planning and execution of ideas with regards to
composition and color scheme. The design will demonstrate a knowledge of informal
        (asymmetrical) balance.

Grading Rubric:
CONCEPT (40 pts) : The project makes use of two complementary color schemes and a wide
range of tones, tints, shades and neutrals. The project demonstrates continuation, as well as
        contour line and organic shapes.
PROFESSIONALISM (40pts): The project is neat and precise, there are no blemishes,
scratches or scuffs that distract the viewer. Paint application is flat and even, the pen marks are
        precise and fluid.
ORIGINALITY (20pts) Are the designs innovative and original, or simply rote copies of the
examples given? Is your composition unique?
