Businesses are now relying heavily on APIs that are running business-critical operations. It’s hard to imagine a stable and effective API-driven business without some form of Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment (CI/CD). Having a CI/CD pipeline for APIs ensures the stability of the API and enables speedy and effective processes when releasing new features and bug fixes that assist to keep the business running smoothly. A typical CI/CD pipeline starts with a central repository that keeps the API artifacts. A new change that is introduced needs to be fully tested before promoting to the upper environment. Tying the CI/CD pipeline with a widely used Version Control System like GIT makes it easy to fully automate this. With the new release of API Controller, it has the built-in support to make use of GIT to manage API deployments. GraphQL is gaining popularity due to the flexibility associated with its usage. Since different users will have different query requirements, GraphQL APIs require rate limiting policies that provide users the flexibility to query required data whilst protecting itself from being overwhelmed. When using GraphQL APIs, its declarative nature of data retrieval enables users to query the exact amount of data required without under fetching or over fetching. Since different queries have different data load and computational complexities, using traditional request count based rate-limiting policies is ill-suited for GraphQL APIs. When enforcing rate-limiting policies to these APIs it is imperative to ensure that it will not hinder the user’s ability to query data. This can be achieved by categorizing users based on their query requirements and introducing rate-limiting policies for each category based on the depth and complexity of their query requirement. WSO2 API Manager consists of a Static Query Analyser which can enforce rate limiting to GraphQL APIs using both depth and complexity analysis. Travelio Tech Talks 2022 presentation The recommended workflow for implementing GitOps with Kubernetes manifests is known as trunk-based development. This method defines one branch as the "trunk" and carries out development on each environment in a different short-lived branch. When development is complete for that environment, the developer creates a pull request for the branch to the trunk. Developers can also create a fork to work on an environment, and then create a branch to merge the fork into the trunk. Once the proper approvals are done, the pull request (or the branch from the fork) gets merged into the trunk. The branch for that feature is deleted, keeping your branches to a minimum. Trunk-based development trades branches for directories. You can think of the trunk as a "main" or primary branch. production and prod are popular names for the trunk branch. Trunk-based development came about to enable continuous integration and continuous delivery by supplying a development model focused on the fast delivery of changes to applications. But this model also works for GitOps repositories because it keeps things simple and more in tune with how Kustomize and Helm work. When you record deltas between environments, you can clearly see what changes will be merged into the trunk. You won’t have to cherry-pick nearly as often, and you’ll have the confidence that what is in your Git repository is what is actually going into your environment. This is what you want in a GitOps workflow.
