The document provides details on the lighting and acoustic design of a proposed community library in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur. It includes:
1. An introduction describing the library as having an area of 1800-2000 sqm and serving to engage the local community.
2. Calculations for the artificial lighting design of a discussion room and cafe area within the library, determining the required number and layout of light fixtures.
3. Calculations of the reverberation time for the discussion room and sound reduction index for the cafe to evaluate the acoustic performance of the spaces.

2.3 ECOTECT FOR CAFE ( FIRST FLOOR )
DAYTIME ARTIFICIAL LIGHT
According to diagram above, area
near the front and back received
more natural daylight compare to
the middle part. Hence the
intensity is the highest
According to diagram above, it shows that
from blue to yellow represents the intensity of
light from low to high and the brightest is in
the middle of the cafe as there will not receive
any natural daylight. Hence, the artificial lights
focus on the middle part of the cafe.

2.4 PSALI FOR DISCUSSION ROOM ( 2ND FLOOR )
Lighting arrangement for the discussion room. As the discussion room receive natural
daylight from 3 faces, the natural daylight that penetrate will lit up half of the
discussion room. According to MS1525, discussion room requires 150 Lux and
therefore min 5 nos of lights are required. For this discussion room, there are 6 nos of
lights placed and controlled by two switches.
During daytime, as half of the discussion room will receive the natural daylight, only
switch 2 is switched on to get enough luminance for the discussion room. During night
time, the space will not get any natural daylight so all of the lights are switched on.
This layout arrangement for the lighting is to reduce the amount of energy waste to lit
up the room during day.

2.5 PSALI FOR CAFE ( FIRST FLOOR )
For cafe, there are 3 switches controlling the lights . during daytime, switch 1 and
switch 3 can be switched off as there are natural daylight penetrating into the space.
As for night time, all the lights are on as there will be no natural daylight penetrating
into the space.
Lighting arrangement for cafe. As the cafe
receive natural daylight at the front and back ,
the natural daylight that penetrate through will lit
up the front and back part of the cafe while the
middle part of the cafe will receive minimum
daylight. According to MS1525, cafe requires 100
Lux and therefore min 17 nos of lights are
required. For the cafe, there are 18 nos of lights
and 3 switches controlling 6 light each.

3.2 SOUND REDUCTION INDEX FOR CAFE ( FIRST FLOOR )
Sound reduction index (SRI) is used to measure the level of sound insulation provided by
structure such as wall, window, door, or ventilator.

45 to 50 dB
Loud speech can be faintly heard but not understood. Normal
speech is inaudible
55 dB or greater
Very loud sounds, such as loud singing, brass musical instruments or a
radio at full volume can be heard faintly or not at all.
According to the general sound environment, the value is categorized as less than 35dB
which is loud according to the normal conversation and can be heard distinctly through
the walls. This cafe spaces uses variety of materials such as concrete, glass, and
aluminum. To be able to achieve better acoustic absorption, the balance use of
effective materials is important, it helps the overall reduction of sound transmission
between spaces.
