Attention Construction Workers: Learn what to do in the Event of a Fire
1. Attention Construction Workers: Learn what to do in the
Event of a Fire
There are numerous hazards that may cause a fire on a construction site, from electrical fires,
gas fires etc. workers need to know how to respond.
In an emergency such as a fire the most important thing to do is get yourself to safety.
Self-preservation is key in an emergency, especially a fire. It is vital that workers do not attempt
to save someone else by putting their own life in danger. Workers should only give assistance
once they have secured their own safety. Often workers may attempt to rescue another worker
and inhale deadly fumes from the fire resulting in their own death in the process.
The next step would be to isolate the fire which can be done maybe closing doors or sealing off
the fire from other parts of the site. The next action to follow would be to call emergency
services. If it is safe to do so a worker can attempt to extinguish the fire, only if the fire is small
and the worker will not endanger themselves by doing so. Workers should gather in the
designated assembly point and remain there until all workers have been accounted for. Workers
should be trained on these emergency procedures before beginning work on site.
By following these guidelines and the ones set out for your site, incidents on construction sites
need not result in tragedy.
