Youth Services area
has a Westerville look
The scenes on the freshly painted
walls in the Youth Services area
are putting smiles on the faces of
children and their families who are
acquainted with Westerville
landmarks.
New murals painted in soft colors
depict some of the places most
recognizable in the community:
Towers Hall at Otterbein University,
Emerson Magnet School, the
Westerville Community Center and
City Building, and even the slide at
Alum Creek Park.
Adding to the feeling of community
is the large photo of the Westerville
Fire Department truck mounted to
the doors of the renovated Activity Center. The truck seems
to open as the children enter the center.
Stop in and enjoy the scenery!

We have good news for students needing help getting
started on a homework assignment, paper or project.
The John E. Robbins Homework Help Center opened this
fall with expanded hours and more helpers, and the
results have been rewarding. Both a part-time staff
member and volunteers are in the center assisting more
students and families than ever.
Students of every age can get help understanding their
assignment, learning to attack their studies and finding
ways to do research. The center is located in the Youth
Services area and open Monday through Thursday,
5-8pm. Need at-home help? Try our KnowItNow.org chat
reference service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

World War II Jeep drive
In 1943, as the country worked together
on the home front to support the troops
fighting overseas, Westerville residents did
their part. A ration board was formed, civil
defense workers conducted dim outs and
drills, and residents worked in war industry
at Kilgore Manufacturing making bombs.
Even students at the three Westerville
schools -- two
elementary
schools and
high school
-- joined
the effort
by raising
$11,464.60
which was
enough
money to
purchase nine
jeeps for the
Army. Students at the Vine Street School
(today Emerson Magnet School) raised
so much money for the jeep drive that an
Army officer brought a jeep to the school
and allowed each of the 325 students a turn
sitting in the vehicle.

2013 LIBRARY JOURNAL

Five-Star Library again

Five-Star Library

Once again Library Journal has recognized the Westerville Public Library as a Five-Star
Library. Only 82 of the more than 9,000 public libraries nationwide were so rated, placing
Westerville in the top 1% of all public libraries in the United States.
This prestigious and very welcomed national recognition is awarded to libraries that are
the heaviest used and most cost efficient. Ratings are determined by community support,
number of library visits, items borrowed, program attendance, computer usage and cost
per capita. Scores are then compared to those of libraries within the same budget range.
We are grateful and humbled by this national recognition. We have a deep appreciation
for the role our customers, Library Board of Trustees, dedicated and top-notch staff and
wonderful community partners have played in this accomplishment.
As 2013 comes to an end and we prepare for a new year, we do so with renewed energy
and continued commitment to excellence. We thank you for helping us achieve the
ranking as one of America’s finest libraries. We are proud of our past successes and with
your continued support we are excited about our future.

We're happy to help
As gift-giving season approaches, we
invite you to browse the Friends Shoppe
for new arrivals. Items with the city
“tree" logo now include orange ceramic
mugs with lids and t-shirts in sizes for
adults and children. One of our pewter
"tree" ornaments can be a thoughtful
gift for friends who have moved from
the area or a holiday gift that can be
displayed year-round.
Sales from the shop and used book
shelves make it possible for the Friends
to provide added funds for library
needs. Recently we were pleased
to help fund the new AfterSchool
Edge Stations – computers loaded
with educational and entertaining
software for ages 6 to 14. Also, we are
sponsoring the annual Music in the

Between the Pages: Winter 2013

  • 1. Between the Pages Fall / Early Winter 2013 westervillelibrary.org Youth Services area has a Westerville look The scenes on the freshly painted walls in the Youth Services area are putting smiles on the faces of children and their families who are acquainted with Westerville landmarks. New murals painted in soft colors depict some of the places most recognizable in the community: Towers Hall at Otterbein University, Emerson Magnet School, the Westerville Community Center and City Building, and even the slide at Alum Creek Park. Adding to the feeling of community is the large photo of the Westerville Fire Department truck mounted to the doors of the renovated Activity Center. The truck seems to open as the children enter the center. Stop in and enjoy the scenery! We have good news for students needing help getting started on a homework assignment, paper or project. The John E. Robbins Homework Help Center opened this fall with expanded hours and more helpers, and the results have been rewarding. Both a part-time staff member and volunteers are in the center assisting more students and families than ever. Students of every age can get help understanding their assignment, learning to attack their studies and finding ways to do research. The center is located in the Youth Services area and open Monday through Thursday, 5-8pm. Need at-home help? Try our KnowItNow.org chat reference service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Coming to Westerville ... LEE CHILD Saturday, February 22 Reception at 5pm. Tickets will be available for purchase. Presentation at 7:30pm. Free registration required. Local History Center World War II Jeep drive In 1943, as the country worked together on the home front to support the troops fighting overseas, Westerville residents did their part. A ration board was formed, civil defense workers conducted dim outs and drills, and residents worked in war industry at Kilgore Manufacturing making bombs. Even students at the three Westerville schools -- two elementary schools and high school -- joined the effort by raising $11,464.60 which was enough money to purchase nine jeeps for the Army. Students at the Vine Street School (today Emerson Magnet School) raised so much money for the jeep drive that an Army officer brought a jeep to the school and allowed each of the 325 students a turn sitting in the vehicle. – Compiled by Beth Weinhardt Local History Coordinator Movies November: Man of Steel 2013 (PG-13), Planes (PG), Red 2 (PG-13) December: Wolverine 2013 (PG-13), Smurfs 2 (PG), Elysium (R) Like Westerville History on Facebook for Local History updates. – Compiled by Belinda Mortensen, Collection Development Coordinator Did you know the library offers . . . • 6. Directions Notes from Executive Director Don W. Barlow 2013 LIBRARY JOURNAL Five-Star Library again Five-Star Library Once again Library Journal has recognized the Westerville Public Library as a Five-Star Library. Only 82 of the more than 9,000 public libraries nationwide were so rated, placing Westerville in the top 1% of all public libraries in the United States. This prestigious and very welcomed national recognition is awarded to libraries that are the heaviest used and most cost efficient. Ratings are determined by community support, number of library visits, items borrowed, program attendance, computer usage and cost per capita. Scores are then compared to those of libraries within the same budget range. We are grateful and humbled by this national recognition. We have a deep appreciation for the role our customers, Library Board of Trustees, dedicated and top-notch staff and wonderful community partners have played in this accomplishment. As 2013 comes to an end and we prepare for a new year, we do so with renewed energy and continued commitment to excellence. We thank you for helping us achieve the ranking as one of America’s finest libraries. We are proud of our past successes and with your continued support we are excited about our future. Fireside Reads We're happy to help As gift-giving season approaches, we invite you to browse the Friends Shoppe for new arrivals. Items with the city “tree" logo now include orange ceramic mugs with lids and t-shirts in sizes for adults and children. One of our pewter "tree" ornaments can be a thoughtful gift for friends who have moved from the area or a holiday gift that can be displayed year-round. Sales from the shop and used book shelves make it possible for the Friends to provide added funds for library needs. Recently we were pleased to help fund the new AfterSchool Edge Stations – computers loaded with educational and entertaining software for ages 6 to 14. Also, we are sponsoring the annual Music in the Atrium series and the winter reading program for adults. Are you a Friend? We hope you’ll join us by completing the membership form in this newsletter. – Arlene Roeder, President Friends of the Library Winter Reading Program for Adults January 6 - February 16 Sign Up Register at the Ask Here desk on the second floor in Adult Services or online at westervillelibrary.org/srp starting January 6. Then, stop in for your welcome gift. Keep Track Go online or stop at the Ask Here desk to log reviews or ratings for the books you’ve read or listened to. Win For every title you log online, you’ll be entered into Prizes weekly and grand prize drawings. Lead Sponsor: Friends of the Westerville Public Library Please join our 2013 Annual Appeal The Library Foundation is dedicated to helping enrich the collections and programs of the library, and fund raising efforts such as our Annual Appeal help with that goal. We ask for your support as we start our campaign. Soon, pamphlets will be available in the library and online at westervillelibrary.org/foundation. Donations can be directed to assisting with immediate needs of the library or building a fund for the future.
