UNDERSTANDING LEARNING STYLES
    FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING
Targeting an Intelligence
              When writing a
             lesson plan, most
             teachers teach to
              the majority of
               their students.
             The downside to
                this that not
              everyone learns
             in the same way.
Teachers must know When teaching
that it is imperative they know who
       their students really are.
Also When giving an assignment it
is important they know how to
 address as many intelligences as
             possible.
Different learning Styles
• In 1983 Dr. Howard Gardner, of Harvard University,
developed his theory of multiple intelligences.

 • He believed that no two people learned the same
                         way.

     • He proposed the following eight different
                    intelligences.
Dr. Howard Gardner’s Intelligence Classifications
Linguistic “Word Smart”

Logical-Mathematical “Number/Reasoning Smart”

Spatial “Picture Smart”

Bodily-Kinesthetic “Body Smart”

Musical “Music Smart”

Interpersonal “People Smart”

Intrapersonal “Self Smart”

Naturalist “Nature Smart”
However, his hypothesis has been
reviewed over time and scholars arrived
at 3 basic learning styles which are:

 Visual
 Auditory
 Kinesthetic/ Manipulative
Learning style is defined as the way
information is processed. It focuses on
      strengths, not weaknesses.
There is no right or wrong learning style
BASIC LEARNING STYLES

Visual learners learn by watching (they think in pictures). They call
up images from the past when trying to remember. They picture
the way things look in their heads. Forty percent of secondary
                   students fall into this category.
VISUAL SUMMARY
             Score mostly A’s

VISUAL SUMMARY
Take numerous detailed notes
Are usually neat and clean
Often close their eyes to visualize
    or remember something
Tend to sit in the front
Like to see what they are learning
Benefit from illustrations and presentations
                that use color
Are attracted to written or spoken language
               rich in imagery
Find something to watch when bored
Find passive surroundings idea
BASIC LEARNING STYLES

       AUDITORY

Auditory learners students learn by listening (lectures,
discussions, tapes etc) and remember facts when they are
presented in the form of a poem, song or melody.
. They can sometimes have trouble reading, because they don't
                         visualize well.
AUDITORY SUMMARY

  B B

      Score mostly B’s
Sit where they can hear but needn’t pay attention
to what is happening in front
May not coordinate colors or clothes, but can explain
why they are wearing what they are wearing and why
Hum or talk to themselves or others
           when bored
Acquire knowledge by reading aloud
Remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves
( if they don’t have difficulty reading maps or diagrams or
    handling conceptual assignments like mathematics)
They can sometimes have trouble reading, because
            they don't visualize well
KINESTHETIC/ TACTILE

Kinesthetic learners learn best through movement and manipulation (via
experience – moving, touching and doing). They like to find out how things
work and are often successful in the practical in the arts, such as carpentry
or design. These students make up 50 percent of secondary students and
have difficulty learning in a traditional setting.
KINESTHETIC/ TACTILE SUMMARY.

Score mostly C’s
2.Need to be active and take frequent breaks
3

Speak with their hands and with gestures
4
REMEMBER WHAT WAS DONE, BUT HAVE
DIFFICULTY RECALLING WHAT WAS SAID OR SEEN
5

FIND REASON TO TINKER OR MOVE WHEN BORED
6

RELY ON WHAT THEY CAN DIRECTLY
    EXPERIENCE OR PERFORM
7

    Activities such as cooking, construction,
engineering and art help them perceive and learn
8

Enjoy field trips and tasks that involve
        manipulating materials
9

Sit near the door or someplace else where they
can easily get up and move around
10

Are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack
     opportunities for hands-on experience
11 Communicate by
      touching and
        appreciate
        physically
        expressed
     encouragement,
     such as a pat on
         the back
PATHETIC STORY
       ONLY 10 PERCENT
OF SECONDARY STUDENTS LEARN
       BEST AUDITORILY,

   BUT, 80% OF
 INSTRUCTIONAL
   DELIVERY IS
    AUDITORY
exercise

What comes to your mind when you
         hear the word

           DOG ?
Some people see a picture of the
             animal
HEAR A BARK
while others visualize the animal dog
INTERESTINGLY
CONCLUSION
Since not everyone remembers things the same way, it is
imperative for a teacher to come up with as many “tricks” as
they can to help their students. Songs, mnemonic devices,
songs, diagrams, games, acronyms and analogies are some
                          examples.
Remember,
  Teaching
Will Last A
 Life Time!
AND

life IS short…
it’s
   YOUR
    LIFE
  that’s
at stake
 Make it
  worth
   YOUR
 WHILE.
time flies…

Understanding learning styles of student for effective teaching

  • 1. UNDERSTANDING LEARNING STYLES FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING
  • 2. Targeting an Intelligence When writing a lesson plan, most teachers teach to the majority of their students. The downside to this that not everyone learns in the same way.
  • 3. Teachers must know When teaching that it is imperative they know who their students really are.
  • 4. Also When giving an assignment it is important they know how to address as many intelligences as possible.
  • 5. Different learning Styles • In 1983 Dr. Howard Gardner, of Harvard University, developed his theory of multiple intelligences. • He believed that no two people learned the same way. • He proposed the following eight different intelligences.
  • 6. Dr. Howard Gardner’s Intelligence Classifications Linguistic “Word Smart” Logical-Mathematical “Number/Reasoning Smart” Spatial “Picture Smart” Bodily-Kinesthetic “Body Smart” Musical “Music Smart” Interpersonal “People Smart” Intrapersonal “Self Smart” Naturalist “Nature Smart”
  • 7. However, his hypothesis has been reviewed over time and scholars arrived at 3 basic learning styles which are:  Visual  Auditory  Kinesthetic/ Manipulative
  • 8. Learning style is defined as the way information is processed. It focuses on strengths, not weaknesses. There is no right or wrong learning style
  • 9. BASIC LEARNING STYLES Visual learners learn by watching (they think in pictures). They call up images from the past when trying to remember. They picture the way things look in their heads. Forty percent of secondary students fall into this category.
  • 10. VISUAL SUMMARY Score mostly A’s VISUAL SUMMARY
  • 12. Are usually neat and clean
  • 13. Often close their eyes to visualize or remember something
  • 14. Tend to sit in the front
  • 15. Like to see what they are learning
  • 16. Benefit from illustrations and presentations that use color
  • 17. Are attracted to written or spoken language rich in imagery
  • 18. Find something to watch when bored
  • 20. BASIC LEARNING STYLES AUDITORY Auditory learners students learn by listening (lectures, discussions, tapes etc) and remember facts when they are presented in the form of a poem, song or melody. . They can sometimes have trouble reading, because they don't visualize well.
  • 21. AUDITORY SUMMARY B B Score mostly B’s
  • 22. Sit where they can hear but needn’t pay attention to what is happening in front
  • 23. May not coordinate colors or clothes, but can explain why they are wearing what they are wearing and why
  • 24. Hum or talk to themselves or others when bored
  • 25. Acquire knowledge by reading aloud
  • 26. Remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves ( if they don’t have difficulty reading maps or diagrams or handling conceptual assignments like mathematics)
  • 27. They can sometimes have trouble reading, because they don't visualize well
  • 28. KINESTHETIC/ TACTILE Kinesthetic learners learn best through movement and manipulation (via experience – moving, touching and doing). They like to find out how things work and are often successful in the practical in the arts, such as carpentry or design. These students make up 50 percent of secondary students and have difficulty learning in a traditional setting.
  • 30. 2.Need to be active and take frequent breaks
  • 31. 3 Speak with their hands and with gestures
  • 32. 4 REMEMBER WHAT WAS DONE, BUT HAVE DIFFICULTY RECALLING WHAT WAS SAID OR SEEN
  • 33. 5 FIND REASON TO TINKER OR MOVE WHEN BORED
  • 34. 6 RELY ON WHAT THEY CAN DIRECTLY EXPERIENCE OR PERFORM
  • 35. 7 Activities such as cooking, construction, engineering and art help them perceive and learn
  • 36. 8 Enjoy field trips and tasks that involve manipulating materials
  • 37. 9 Sit near the door or someplace else where they can easily get up and move around
  • 38. 10 Are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience
  • 39. 11 Communicate by touching and appreciate physically expressed encouragement, such as a pat on the back
  • 40. PATHETIC STORY ONLY 10 PERCENT OF SECONDARY STUDENTS LEARN BEST AUDITORILY, BUT, 80% OF INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY IS AUDITORY
  • 41. exercise What comes to your mind when you hear the word DOG ?
  • 42. Some people see a picture of the animal
  • 44. while others visualize the animal dog
  • 46. CONCLUSION Since not everyone remembers things the same way, it is imperative for a teacher to come up with as many “tricks” as they can to help their students. Songs, mnemonic devices, songs, diagrams, games, acronyms and analogies are some examples.
  • 47. Remember, Teaching Will Last A Life Time!
  • 49. it’s YOUR LIFE that’s at stake Make it worth YOUR WHILE.
