Sharing the transforming love of Jesus, across the street and around the world.
“Living God’s Grace in an Unbelieving World”
A Sermon Series on 1 Peter
“A New, Living Hope”
1 Peter 1:1-12
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To God’s chosen strangers in the
world of the diaspora, who live in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia,
and Bithynia. God the Father chose you because of what he knew
beforehand. He chose you through the Holy Spirit’s work of making you
holy and because of the faithful obedience and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
May God’s grace and peace be multiplied to you. May the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! On account of his vast mercy,
he has given us new birth. You have been born anew into a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. You have a
pure and enduring inheritance that cannot perish—an inheritance that is
presently kept safe in heaven for you.
We have New Birth because of God’s initiative… He CHOSE us!!
The New Birth gives us a LIVING HOPE because our Lord Jesus Christ
resurrected from the dead and is ALIVE right now!
Believers are guarded for Glory (v. 5)
Through his faithfulness, you are guarded by God’s power so that you
can receive the salvation he is ready to reveal in the last time.
God is FAITHFUL . . . He will guard us for our eternal place in
2. heaven!!
Believers are being prepared for Glory (vs. 6-7)
You now rejoice in this hope, even if it’s necessary for you to be
distressed for a short time by various trials. This is necessary so that
your faith may be found genuine. (Your faith is more valuable than gold,
which will be destroyed even though it is itself tested by fire.) Your
genuine faith will result in praise, glory, and honor for you when Jesus
Christ is revealed.
Believers can benefit from the glory NOW (vs. 8-12)
Although you’ve never seen him, you love him. Even though you
don’t see him now, you trust him and so rejoice with a glorious joy
that is too much for words. You are receiving the goal of your
faith: your salvation. The prophets, who long ago foretold the grace
that you’ve received, searched and explored, inquiring carefully about
this salvation. They wondered what the Spirit of Christ within them
was saying when he bore witness beforehand about the suffering that
would happen to Christ and the glory that would follow. They wondered
what sort of person or what sort of time they were speaking about. It
was revealed to them that in their search they were not serving
themselves but you. These things, which even angels long to examine,
have now been proclaimed to you by those who brought you the good
news.
They did this in the power of the Holy Spirit, who was sent from heaven.
Believers can:
Love Him… NOW
Trust Him… NOW
Rejoice in Him… NOW
Receive from Him… NOW

Questions for Personal or Group Reflection:
1. Why did Peter call his readers “strangers”… and how are believers
“strangers” today?
2. In verse 2, what does each of the statements about the members
of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) mean?
3. How does Peter describe our spiritual birth?
4. How would you describe the HOPE we have that Peter talks
about? What impact does that have on the trials you face?
5. How does the assurance of the sovereignty of God affect the way
you face trials in life?
6. How can you respond to the trials you face in this life? Why?
7. How and why does this text (1 Peter 1:1-12) help you personally?
If not, why not?

Would you consider making an impact in the life of a student?
We are looking for help with the youth ministry to pour the love of Jesus
Christ into the lives of students aged 10-16. The latest Barna Study
indicates that nearly half (43%) of all Americans who accept Jesus Christ
8. as their Savior do so before the age of 13. Almost two out of three (64%)
of born-again Christians made that commitment to Christ before their
18th birthday.
You can help in many ways:
Chaperon retreats
Mentor student leaders
Lead weekly Crossfire events - play games, eat together, share
the Gospel
Pray for our students
Teach "tweeners' Sunday School once a month
