STATE CONSTITUTIONAL PROVISION - Article 1, Section 16. “Every citizen has a right to keep and
bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.”
Although the second amendment allows citizens to own fire arms, there are cases where people can
be ineligible. These include:
A person convicted of a felony
A person who is a fugitive
Illegal drug users
People involuntarily committed to a mental institution
Illegal aliens
People who renounced their US citizenship
People dishonorably discharged from the armed forces
People subject to domestic violence restraining order
Maine gun laws
Not all weapons count as fire arms under these stipulations and the rules vary from state to state. In
Maine there are other things that may prevent you from owning a gun. They include people who:
Have spent more than a year in prison
Have committed a crime with a fire arm
Have a domestic violence protection order out against them
Have committed any of these crimes as a juvenile
Have been found guilty of any of the above crimes due to mental illness
Tips for gun safety
Treat guns as if they are loaded
Point muzzle away from non-target
Keep fingers off trigger
Be sure of target and what is beyond it
