1. As an individual I believe that pleasure and happiness can absolutely be taken too far. We wouldn’t have any time for friends or family because we would be so caught up in our own happiness. As a society I believe that pleasure and happiness can be taken too far as well. I know that if everyone in the world were happy we would not have to fight for anything anymore, and everything would just go our ways. If everyone in the world were all happy we wouldn’t want to socialize with anyone because happiness and pleasure would take over. The world wouldn’t revolve and function the same because the over-happiness of people would overrule power.
In a society where pleasure comes above all, we would all have to perform some kind of everyday routine to maintain pleasure for every single person. If a law were to be passed for the pleasure of the people, it would state that “All pleasure shall be equal and fair. No individual shall have more pleasure than the next.” Another law that might come in to effect is “Everyone is responsible for the pleasure of another.” I personally believe that any kind of society that thinks that pleasure is the highest good is preposterous, because once you have too much happiness and pleasure, your society is going to turn on you and you won’t be able to maintain control.
Being in the military may be discomforting and “painful” for the individuals. Although these men are women are risking their lives and everything they own, they are doing it for the benefit of their country and their loved ones at home. Those who fight are doing justice for those who aren’t. The military services provide a greater good to all the citizens that aren’t with the service.
A firefighter puts their life on the line every time they suit up to put out a fire. Their job forces them to put their life in danger for the safety of another. They might climb into a burning building and rescue someone, but not make it out alive. The people who aren’t firefighters benefit from a greater good because of the deeds done by a fireman.
I believe utilitarianism can be embraced, but only to a certain extent. People have to understand that happiness is made because of suffering and pain. If there were no pain or suffering we’d have a mutual and bland lifestyle. My personal opinion on utilitarianism is that we can embrace it, but only until it stops benefiting everyone.
