• Planning
  – A primary functional managerial activity that
    involves:
    • Defining the organization’s goals
    • Establishing an overall strategy for achieving those
      goals
    • Developing a comprehensive set of plans to
      integrate and coordinate organizational work.
  – Types of planning
    • Informal: not written down, short-term focus;
      specific to an organizational unit.
    • Formal: written, specific, and long-term focus,
      involves shared goals for the organization.

  – Formal planning is associated with:
     • Higher profits and returns of assets.

  – The quality of planning and implementation affects
    performance more than the extent of planning.
  – The external environment can reduce the impact of
    planning on performance,
  – Formal planning must be used for several years before
    planning begins to affect performance.
How Do Managers Plan?
• Elements of Planning
  – Goals (also Objectives)
    • Desired outcomes for individuals, groups, or entire
      organizations
    • Provide direction and evaluation performance
      criteria
  – Plans
    • Documents that outline how goals are to be
      accomplished
    • Describe how resources are to be allocated and
      establish activity schedules
Types of Goals
• Financial Goals
  – Are related to the expected internal financial
    performance of the organization.
• Strategic Goals
  – Are related to the performance of the firm relative to
    factors in its external environment (e.g.,
    competitors).
• Stated Goals versus Real Goals
  – Broadly-worded official statements of the
    organization (intended for public consumption) that
    may be irrelevant to its real goals (what actually
    goes on in the organization).

    product or process, serve similar customers,
    and/or are located in the same area or

 Guidelines for effective delegation:
  –   Carefully choose the person to whom you delegate.

    and composed of individuals who report directly to a

    complete a specific job task; their existence is often
    temporary because once the task is completed, the
    group disbands.

• Cross-functional Teams
  – Groups that bring together the knowledge and skills of
    individuals from various work areas or groups whose
    members have been trained to do each others’ jobs.

• Self-managed Teams
  – Groups that are essentially independent and in

    scheduling, and performance evaluations.

  • 1. What Managers Do Managers (or administrators) Individuals who achieve goals through other people. Managerial Activities • Make decisions • Allocate resources • Direct activities of others to attain goals
  • 2. Where Managers Work Organization A consciously coordinated social unit, composed of two or more people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals.
