The UNV Online Volunteering service connects volunteers with organizations working for sustainable human development. Volunteers contribute their skills online to help organizations address development challenges. Organizations collaborate with online volunteers over the Internet to strengthen the impact of their development work.
The UNV Online Volunteering service gives development organization access to a pool of skills and experience, while it offers individuals worldwide additional opportunities to volunteer for development and contribute to achieving the Millennium development Goals.

Organizations and volunteers collaborate over the internet
The Online Volunteering service is one of the tool of UNV to mobilize volunteers (with the OV service, UNV mobilizes “other volunteers”, i.e. non “UNV volunteers”).
Note
Definition: Online volunteers are people who commit their time and skills over the Internet, freely and without financial considerations, for the benefit of society.
Thousands of volunteers are ready to provide support: professionals, students, retirees and expatriates from across the globe contribute their skills online to help organizations address development challenges.
Everyone can make a difference.
To be eligible to use the Online Volunteering service, organisations have to be: non-profit, officially registered with the appropriate government authorities, active in the field of sustainable human development, non-discriminatory and in compliance with the Charter and policies of the United Nations.
Note
As of December 31, 2007, 79% of registered organizations are NGOs, 19% UN organizations, 2% local governments and universities
69% of the organizations are based in developing countries
NGOs range from grassroots organizations, local NGOs to international NGOs
Enhance organization’s resources
Online volunteers provide your organization with additional skills and expertise that may not be available locally. Coming from various backgrounds and cultures, they bring new ideas and fresh perspectives.
Develop organization’s capacities
Online volunteers can increase your organization’s institutional capacities by training staff, teaching new skills or providing guidance and advice.
Extend your organization’s networks
Online volunteers learn about your organization and the people it serves, and in turn share this information with their friends and colleagues – mobilizing additional support.
Online volunteers can help an organization in many ways :
- Provide technical expertise (e.g. advice on waste disposal, develop architectural plan, devise training material)
- Support the management of projects and resources (e.g. draft project proposal, develop fundraising strategy)
- Contribute to managing knowledge (e.g. conduct survey, develop a database, research information)
- Facilitate communication and networking (e.g. write a newsletter, moderate online discussion group, develop website, translate documents)
At any given time there are hundreds of opportunities available.
Example 1
The International Poverty Centre (IPC) is a global centre for applied research and training on poverty.
Contribution
A team of 23 online volunteers from 17 countries researched centres working on social development and poverty in each country. They liaised with the most relevant institutions and compiled the information to build the UNDP International Poverty Center’s directory of 2,800 research centres worldwide.
Impact
The result is a key tool that fosters knowledge sharing, especially between developing countries

Example 2
Contribution
Six online volunteers supported the Youth for Technology Foundation in establishing the Sironko Digital Village, a community technology and learning center in Uganda
Strategy: helped define a strategy that ensures the center’s sustainability and provides for the possibility of its replication in other countries. They developed strategies for training courses, entrepreneur incubation and income generation.
Infrastructure: They made recommendations on networking equipment, internet connection and providers, online facilities and electricity supply.
Outreach: They created a webpage, developed marketing material, researched potential donors, managed a contacts database of supporters and conducted outreach campaigns.
Impact
Online volunteers contributed to the mobilization of programmatic support and of 30 laptops for the center as well as to strong partnerships.

With involving online volunteers in their activities organizations give citizens worldwide the opportunity to contribute to the achievment of the Millenium Development Goals.
Online volunteering is inclusive: it allows people from all walks of life and all regions of the world to participate.
- It enables South-South but also South-North collaboration: A volunteer from a developing country could support an organization based in a developed country
- It is an opportunity for people with disabilties to support development projects.
- It may also enable an expatriate to reconnect with and provide help to his or her country. (
Who volunteered- Elizabeth and Tim, mother and sone.
Host organization: Their host organization, the Child and Adoption Society Zambia, runs two transit homes for homeless children, many of them orphans due to HIV/AIDS, and endeavors to re-integrate them into families.
What did they do? “…identified donors of sports equipment, such as children’s soccer shoes, shorts and shirts, soccer balls, tennis rackets, basketballs etc. that are now being used by Zambian street children.
Result: “The organization was able to involve more homeless children in organized sporting activities, giving them hope, life skills, recreation and a friendly social environment…”
From article, more details: “Having selected their online volunteering assignment together, Elizabeth took over a coordinating role, while her son Tim promoted the children’s sports project at his high school and mobilized his personal networks in Canada to find equipment donors. Through their combined efforts, they not only successfully identified donors, but they also collected the donated items, organized their shipment, and found sponsors to cover all costs involved…”

Development organizations previously screened by UNV offer their opportunities on the OV service website.
Individuals search for opportunities that match their profile and interest and apply via the OV service website.
Applications are sent directly to the organizations that posted the opportunity and it is up to the organizations to select the online volunteers they would like to work with.
Upon completion of an assignment, both the organization and the online volunteer submit feedback regarding their online collaboration and the organization issues a certificate of appreciation to the online volunteer.

UNV takes up to two working days to review the opportunity.
There is more demand from individuals who would like to volunteer their expertise for the cause of development than opportunities.
Assignments posted by organizations regularly attract a good number of qualified applications (in 2007, every assignment posted on the OV website attracted at least two applications).
Individuals applying for assignments are usually eager to start take up the task immediately.
It is a free service!
